VANITY-BOX.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK S. HYATT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

invention relates to vanity boxes or similar containers for toilet articles such as powder and rouge pads and lip-sticks and the like, the invention conslsting more particularly in the manner in which the toilet articles are positioned and removably held in the container.

The invention has for its object the production of a novel vanity or similar box'so constructed as to permit the contents thereof to be snugly and compactly held therein.

A further object of the invention is the production of a novel form of lip-stick holder and retainer therefor adapted to fit within a box of the type referred to above.

The invention consists in the novel parts and combinations of parts hereinafter more. particularly described and then specified in the claims.

Referring in detail to the drawings:

1 indicates the body of the vanity box, preferably constructed of thin sheet metal and provided with arcuate end walls as illustrated. hinged to said box may be provided with a mirror 3 mounted therein if so desired. 4 indicates a seat or shoulder on said body adapted to engage the edge of the cover 2 and acting as a stop therefor when the cover is in closed position. In order to detaclr ably hold the cover in closed position the body is provided with a protuberance 5 struck out from said body and adapted to engage a clasp (3 on said cover.

is clearly shown in Fig. 3 and is preferably constructed of a single piece of metal as illustrated. Said retainer comprises a base 7 having upwardly and outwardly flaring side walls 8, folded ends 9 forming extensions of said base and supporting arms 10 extending vertically upwardly from said ends 9. The side walls 8 are preferably provided without-out portions 11. Said retainer is adapted to removably fit within the vanity box intermediate the arcuate end walls thereof, and to extend transversely thereacross with the folded ends 9 engaging the inner side of the box.

12 indicates removable annular pads or containers holding rouge or powder tablets or any other similar preparation or compound, said pads fitting within the vanity box and engaging the arcuate end walls thereof as well as the outwardly flaring side walls 8 of the retainer for the lip-stick holder. As is obvious, said outwardly flaring side Walls act to prevent the pads from becoming displaced within the vanity box and 111 a measure form pockets therefor. 13 indicates powder puffs of a conventional form which rest loosely on the powder or rouge tablets held by the pads 12 and which are preferably compressed against said powder or rouge tablets by the cover 2 when it is in closed position. When the tablets or rouge pads are worn away a portion of the powder puffs may extend within the cutout portions 11 of the side walls 8 of the retainer to prevent crushing of the pads by said side walls.

My improved lipstick holder which is clearly shown in Fig. 2 comprises an elongated oval casing 14 having an open end adapted to receivealip-stick 15. Said casing is provided with upwardly extending flanges 16 having a slot therebetween leading into the container, which flanges are provided with struck-out protuberances 17. 18 indicates a knob spanning the slot between the flanges 16 to the shank of which, within the casing, is fastened a pusher (not shown) engaging the inner end of the lipstick 15 whereby said lip-stick may be forced out of the casing for use when so desired by operation of the knob 18 in an obvious manner. The lip-stick holder is adapted to rest or be seated within its retainer within the vanity box, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5, in engagement with the base 7, side walls 8 and supporting arms 10, said supporting arms slightly gripping the lipstick holder and acting to prevent the same from rolling over on the side walls and acting also to hold it in a perfectly vertical position. Said lip-stick holder may easily be withdrawn for use When so desired by gripping either of the flanges 16, the protuberances 17 thereof or the knob 18 whereby the holder may be held firmly for withdrawal.

As is obvious, when the cover of the vanity box is closed the contents of the box are securely and firmly held therein and are prevented from being shaken around and becoming damaged. I do not limit the invention to the use of a lip-stick holder although I prefer to use a cosmetically useful article.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is 1. A vanity box holding a plurality of rouge or powder holding pads therein, a retainer fitting within said vanity box and a cosmetically useful article held b said retainer and provided' with upward y extending flanges providing gripping means whereby the cosmetically useful article may be withdrawn.

2. A vanity box holding a plurality of rouge or powder holding ads therein and a retainer fitting within said box and holding a cosmetically useful article, said retainer having side walls extending over the rouge or powder holding pads and adapted to prevent displacement thereof.

3. A vanity box holding a plurality o1 rouge or powder holding pads therein. a retainer fitting within said box and having outwardly flaring walls extending over the rouge or powder holding pads and adapted to prevent displacement thereof and having upwardly extending vertical arms and a removable cosmetically useful article fitting in said retainer intermediate its side walls and arms and provided with gripping means whereby said cosmetically useful article may be withdrawn.
