Description

June 25, 1957 A. STEINER COMPACTS, VANITY CASES AND THE LIKE Filed June A29, 1955 INVENTOR.
ALOIS STEINER ATTORN EY United States Patent O COMPACTS, VANITY CASES AND THE LIKE Alois Steiner, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Application June 29, 1955, Serial No. 518,715
4 Claims. (Cl. 132-83) This invention relates to compacts, vanity cases and the like. More particularly the invention provides an improved type of compact adapted to carry in a handy and convenient manner a plurality of vanity items such as may be used by a woman besides the usual supply of face powder.
It is an object of my invention to provide a vanity case which is small, compact and easy to carry and which is equipped with a mirror and face powder compartment, the mirror being positioned within the inner surface of the upper cover member, a center cover member having a concave upper surface to form a cavity as a powder compartment, said powder compartment having its own independently operated cover to keep the powder intact when in the closed position. A further important object of the invention is to combine with such a compact a multi-chambered body portion or element to which the cover member is hinged in such manner as to form a cover means adapted when closed against said body element to retain removable objects in said chambers.
A novel and useful feature of my invention accordingly resides in the fact that my invention provides in a single convenient vanity case not only the usual mirror and face powder but other useful items such as a lipstick, eyebrow pencil, nail polish and the like all readily available, ready for use as needed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a vanity case of the kind described which is attractive in shape and size and which when not in use may be tightly closed so as to be safely carried in the hand or purse.
Other objects, advantages and features of my invention will be noted as the specication proceeds.
In order to facilitate ready comprehension of this invention for a proper appreciation of the salient features thereof, reference is made to the drawings forming a part of this application, and in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my compact.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of same.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of my compact as shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a plan view of my compact, opened to disclose the removable vanity items carried thereby.
Throughout the views, the same reference numerals indicate the same or like parts.
A vanity case or compact constructed according to one form of my invention is shown in Fig. 1, in closed condition for convenience in carrying and in which 5, is the upper cover member within which, as shown in Fig. 3,
is mounted a suitable mirror 6. This upper cover member 5, is hinged at 7, to the multi-chambered lower body element 10. The lower body element 10, is provided with suitable chambers 11, 12 and 13, which are adapted to contain such makeup products as nail polish, lipstick, eyebrow pencil and the like and which normally are re 2,796,874l Patented June 25, 1957 ice tained in their respective places while the center cover member 8 is in closed position. As shown in Figure 4, the upper cover member 5, carrying the mirror 6, may be retained in the open position when the center cover member 8 is opened without disturbing the position of the mirror to permit ready access to aforesaid vanity items 11, 12 and 13 within the chambers of the lower body element 10.
As shown in Figure 3, the center cover member 8 has an independent powder compartment cover 16 hinged at 17 at the top of the inner side of the center cover member 8, to be opened when desired by upward extending pin 18, and closed at 19 by a suitable fastening means commonly used in vanity cases for releasably holding said cover shut.
yFrom the foregoing it will be seen that in its simplest form my invention provides a neat and convenient form of vanity case or compact with the usual upper cover member having a mirror positioned on its under surface, a center cover member with the usual face powder compartment, covered and closed with its own independent cover to retain the powder intact when in closed position, plus the added advantage and convenience of practical means for carrying other desired make-up products all within a single, neat case. Suitable means 14 adapted to engage the pins 15 may be used to hold the compact in shut position or any other well known latching device commonly employed on compacts for releasably holding the cover shut may be employed.
Although I have described my invention in relatively specific terms, it will be understood that variations may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
l claim as my invention:
l. In a vanity case, three units consisting of an upper cover member having a mirror positioned on its under surface, said upper cover member being hinged to the lower body element, a center cover member containing a chamber formed in its upper surface and having an independent hinged cover for retaining the powder therein closed by a suitable fastening means, said center cover member being attached by a suitable hinge to the periphery of the lower body element, and a lower body element.
2. In a vanity case according to claim 1, a center cover member having an upward protruding pin on the upper surface thereof for readily opening said hinged cover of said center cover member.
3. In a vanity case according to claim 1, wherein said center cover member when in a closed position is adapted to form a cover portion for the lower body element, hinged on the periphery of the lower body element in a position approximately ninety degrees from the hinge of the upper cover member.
4. In a vanity case according to claim l', wherein the upper cover member, center cover member and lower body element may be held in the open position without interference each from the other.
