Description
F. F REIBERG BEAUTY KIT Dec. 13, 1949 Filed June 4, 1947 i FIG. l.
INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 13, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The present invention relates to beauty kits in general and particularly to an improved beauty kit having two compartments and which is particularly adapted to be carried in a ladys pocketbook. Specically the invention comprises a beauty kit including a base removably seating a plurality of feminine accessories, a central compartment containing powder, and a pivoted cover.
The modern womans beauty accessories comprising the usual compact, lipstick, rouge and mascara unit are considered by her to be necessary to her well being and comfort. She usually carries these loosely as individual units in her pocketbook where frequently they open, spilling the contents. lA plurality of such individual units occupy an unnecessarily large space and frequently become so arranged within the bag as to distort its normal pleasing contours.
yThe present invention is directed to an improved beauty kit which incorporates in one unit theusual compact and also means incorporating the various other items which the owner may need. The construction is arranged as to occupy a minimum of space and is adapted to be opened selectively to enable the owner to use the com'- pact or other of the contained articles, a mirror being available at all times in which to view her handiwork.
It is, accordingly, an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved ladys beauty kit.
It is another object of the invention to provide a unitary beauty kit incorporating in a plurality of compartments the feminine accessories which are usually found separately.
It is a further object of the invention to provide an improved beauty kit in which a compact may be opened to present simultaneously to the owner the usual puff, powder and a reflecting mirror.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a unitary beauty kit in which, in addition to the usual compact, is a compartment housing a plurality of separately usable feminine accessories, a reflecting mirror being available when such articles are used.
These and other more specific objects will appear upon reading the following specication and claims and upon considering in connection therewith the attached drawing to which they relate.
Referring now to the drawing in which a presently preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the beauty kit constructed in accordance with the present invention with certain parts broken away in order bet ter to illustrate the interior construction;
Figure 2 is a transverse medial section upon the line 2--2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is a partial section upon the line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a partial section upon the line 1 -i of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a partial end view looking in the direction of the arrows upon the line 5-5 of Figure 2 and illustrates the hinge mounting of the parts making up the kit; and
Figure 6 is a partial side View looking in the direction of the arrows upon the line 6-6 of Figure 2 and shows the latch means.
Referring again to the drawing, the 4unit con? structed in accordance with the present invention is indicated generally by the reference character I0 and is seen to comprise a base Il, a central partition I2, and a lid or cover I3. Partition l2 is pivotally mounted to the base and the cover to the partition, as will be described.
Referring rst to the base II, that member is preferably formed solid of a material Asuch as 'a molded plastic and has appreciable mass. 'It is provided at its lower edge with a circumferentiallyextended marginal rim I6, and with an enclosing' upstanding wall I1 which forms a central body cavity. Molded integrally into base II are a plurality of receptacles indicated generally by the reference characters 2l, 22 and 23, which are, respectively, shaped as to receive a lipstick 26, to serve as a rouge box 2 1 and as a mascara unit 28. vEach of these receptacles is formed with a peripheral enclosing wall and in the case of units 21 and 28 a removable cover is provided, indicated by the reference character of *the unit supplemented by a suiiix a. In the case of mascara unit 28 a central wall 2817l divides the receptacle longitudinally into a container for a body of mascara 29, and into a pocket for the related brush indicated at 3I.
Intermediate partition I2 is provided with a depending wall 31 designed as to telescope up- Standing wall I1 of base I i, and is, upon its upper surface, centrally recessed to provide a shallow cup or receptacle 39, adapted to seat the usual powder retaining pad 4I and an overlying puii 12. Lid or cover I 3 is slightly convex and its peripheral rim 44 engages the shouldered upper edge of intermediate member I2, so that it is retained frictionally in its closed position, as illus'- trated in Figure 2.
The undersides of both partition I2 and cover i3 carry reflecting mirrors, indicated by the reference characters I2b and I3b, respectively, and each is pivoted to the underlying element. In the case of partition I2 a hinge pin 41 extends between abutments 49 on the wall I1 which at their upper ends extend into spaced recesses 48 in wall 31. The lower edge 5I of the wall 31 between abutments 49 is attened and is so dimensioned as to abut the adjacent face of wall 3 II when the partition is pivoted to its open position as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2. The construction holds the partition in substantially an upright position and the weight of the solid base I I is sufficient to prevent the unit from tipping over.
The pivot pin 41 is positioned, preferably, well below the top of the base peripheral wall I1 to reduce to a minimum the turning moment present with the partition in open position.
Cover I3 for its part is pivoted to partition IZ upon a pin 53 which extends through the cover rim 44 with its ends pivotally seated in abutments 55 formed in the partition and extended into rim recesses 54. As in the case of surface 5I on wall 31 the edge surface 58 of rim 44 between the abutments 56 is so contoured that with the cover I3 pivoted upon the partition to a substantially vertical position, as shown in dotted lines in Figure 2, the surface acts asa stop to hold it upright.
Cover I3 is held against unintended displacementwith respect'to partition I2 by the frictional engagement of its rim All with the partition, as previously mentioned. Partition I2 and base II, however, are releasably held together in the closed relationship of the device by the frietional engagement' of an over-hanging lip 6I on the base with the rounded edge of partition wall 37 which issomewhat thickened at S2 to provide a retaining ledge.
The use of the beauty kit constructed in accordance with the present invention is believed to be clear. In its normal'closed relationship the unit is illustrated in full lines in Figures 1 and 2. Should the owner desire to usethe powder in the compact, which term can be appliedto the combined cover I3 and partition I2, shemerely pivots the cover I3 upwardly from Vthe partition until the stop 58 rests upon the underlying surface of the partition in which position further pivotal movement is prevented. The cover alone, pivoted to its open position, is indicated by the character Ain Figure 2. She is then free to remove the puff 42 and simultaneously make use of the mirror I3?) which would face her from its position on the inside ofthe lid I3.
Should the owner, however, desire to make use of one of the accessories positioned within the compartment formed by the partition I 2 and the base II she would instead pivot the partition upwardly, jointly with the cover and as a unit, in which event the pivotalA movement takes place about the pivot pin 67, the unit pivoting into the dotted line position B illustrated in Figure 2. When so positioned the mirror I2b on the under side of partition I2 would be presented to her view and shewould be free to make use selectively of the accessories 26, 2l' and 28.
As distinguished from the usual beauty kit the unit constructed in accordance with the present invention is stable with either the cover I3 pivoted to its open position or with both cover and partition i12V pivoted` jointly to their open positions. The presence of the relatively great mass of solid 4 base I I provides not only relatively great strength but also a balancing weight which prevents overturning under the forces exerted by the lid and/ or partition in their open positions, the stops 5I and 58 preventing the pivoted elements moving into angular positions in which their turning movements would be suicient as to unbalance the unit.
While the particular embodiment of the invention herein shown and described in detailais fully capable of attaining the objects and providing the advantages hereinbefore stated, it is to`=be undei-stood that it is merely illustrative of the presently preferred embodiments of the invention and that no limitations are intended to the details of construction or design herein shown other than as defined in the appended claims.
