The present invention relates to loose powder containers or dispensers, and more in particular to such containers or dispensers for use as vanity cases.

Among the objects of the present invention is to-provide a novel compact adapted to contain a substantial quantity of loose powder and having means whereby this powder may be dispensed in small quantities, as desired.

The present invention comprehends the idea of providing a novel compact or the like adapted to contain and dispense loose powder, suitable means being provided whereby this loose powder is normally enclosed at all times when the compact is being used and wherein suitable means is further provided for feeding small quantities of this powder into a position adapted for use.

More particularly, the present invention includes as an object the idea of providing a novel compact having means for feeding small quantities of powder into position for use, in combination with suitable means for preventing movement of any loose powder which may be in a position for use in the compact when in its closed position.

Still another object within the purview of the present invention is to provide a novel compact having means for feeding quantities of loose powder into a position for use, suitable means, such as a powder puff or the like, being normally retained in a position to take up these small quantities of powder and enclosed by a closure member or cover to hold the same in position and to prevent movement of excess powder within the compact when in its closed position.

The present invention further comprehends the idea of providing a novel compact having a closure member for a powder chamber provided with a depression adapted to receive a powder puff or the like, this powder puff and closure member being enclosed by an intermediate cover to prevent displacement of loose powder within the compact when the compact is either in its open position or when the cover therefor is closed.

Other objects, features, capabilities and advantages are comprehended by the invention, as will later appear and as are inherently possessed thereby.

Referring to the drawing:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a compact made in accordance with the present invention, disclosing the same in closed position;

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the compact of Figure 1 of the drawing, disclosing the same in its open position;

Figure 3 is a fragmentary top plan View of the compact shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, with an intermediate cover in open position; 5

Referring now more in detail to the drawing, an embodiment selected to illustrate the present invention comprises a case 2 having a cover 4 l5 swingably secured thereto as by means of hinge means 6 to one side of the case 2. The present invention is disclosed in connection with a substantially square compact, although it is to be understood that the compact may be of any size 20 or shape, as desired. The cover 4 is formed with compartments 8 and ID adapted to receive rouge or the like, these compartments 8 and ill being normally closed by a closure member l2 swingably connected to the cover 4 as by means 25 of the hinge 14, this closure member having one or more polished surfaces serving as a mirror, if desired.

The case 2 is formed with an elongated chamber l6 adapted to receive a holder l8 swingably connected to the caseby the hinge 20, and which is adapted to receive lipstick .22. This holder and stick are normally urged upwardly as by means of a leaf spring 24 secured to the bottom of the case 2.

This case 2 is further formed with a powder chamber 26 adapted to receive and retain a substantial quantity of loose powder, this loose powder being held within the chamber as by means of a closure member 28, which, in the present it embodiment, is swingably secured to the case as by means of the hinges 30, although it is to be clearly understood that this closure member 28 may be frictionally retained in position, if dewhereby the powder is prevented from spilling and the powder puff 34 is enclosed to prevent excess powder therein from moving or being discharged therefrom into other parts of the compact. I

The closure member 28 is further provided with a series of elongated apertures 42 normally closed by a grid 44 having a series of powder feeding elements or members 46 adapted to register with the openings 42. This grid 44 is normally urged into its uppermost position whereby the elements 46 conform to the openings 42 as by means of a spring 48 having its free ends connected to the outermost bars or elements 46 and having its intermediate portion secured as at 59 to the member 28, this spring 48 serving to flexibly support the grid 44 and to permit downward movement there' of into the powder supply, as disclosed in Figure of the drawing. The elements 46 have their top surface slightly depressed in order to retain a' small quantity of powder thereon which is adapted to be fed upwardly through the openings or slots 42 when the grid 44 is released and moves upwardly under the impulse of the spring member 48.

The grid member 44 is depressed into the powder supply by means of prongs or projections 52! and 54 projecting from the intermediate cover 36 and adapted to project through openings 56 and 58 of the closure member 28 and engage the corners 6D and 62 of the spring 48 which are disposed directly beneath these openingsifir'i and 58 when this cover is lowered toward and into its closed position. This cover 36 when swung into its closed position engages with the powder puff 34 to hold the same in closed contact with the closure member 28 and to close the slots or openings 42 to prevent discharge of powder therethrough when this cover 36 is in its closed position, It will of course be appreciated that at this time the grid 44 is in its lowermost position, and when the compact is being carried from place to place in this condition a certainamount of powder will brush or contact the surfaces of the puff 34 exposed through the openings 42, so that when the cover 36 is opened, a reasonable amount of powder has collected upon the powder p-ufif 34 for use. When the cover 36 is swung into its open position, the grid 44 is raised under the impulse of the spring member 48,

thus carrying andfeeding a small quantity of powder through the openings 42, this additional supply of powder being used as desired. i

After the powder has been used, the powde puff 34 may be replaced in the depression 321' and the cover 35 may then be swung into its closed position and into engagement with the springpressed latch 40, after which the compact may be closed by the cover 4 which is normally engaged by the, latch member 64 which is operated by means of the outwardly projecting prong 63..

While I have herein described and upon the drawing shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto but may comprehend other constructions, arrangements of parts, de-i tails and features without departing from the closure member for said chamber, powder feeding means secured to said closure member and v including a resiliently mounted grid member movable to close said apertures and to feed powder therethrough, a cover swingably secured to said case and having means for moving said grid member away from said apertures when said cover is in its closed position, and a cover swingably 5 secured to said case and adapted to enclose said first-named cover, said first-named cover being adapted to completely enclose said closure member and said powder feeding means.

A compact comprising a case having a hinged outer cover,'a powder receptacle occupying a portion of said case, an inner apertured plate hinged :to said case and normally covering said powder receptacle, movable means attached to said apertured plate adjacent said powder receptacle, said means corresponding in number and substantially in size with the openings in said apertured plate for. conveyingthe powder from said receptacle to thetop of said plate, and a solid cover for said apertured plate adapted when in closed position to prevent the escape of powder from said apertured plate.

Acompact comprising a case having a hinged outer cover, a powder receptacle occupying a portion of said case, an inner apertured plate hinged to said case and normally covering said powder receptacle, a grid resiliently attached to the side of said apertured plate adjacent said powder receptacle, said grid having a plurality of elongated members for conveying powder through the openings in said apertured plate, and a solid cover for said plate adapted when in closed position to prevent the escape of powder from said apertured plate. a 1 i 4. A compact comprising a case having a hinged outer cover, a powder receptacle occupying a portion of said case, an inner apertured plate hinged to said case and normally covering said powder receptacle,- said apertured plate having a plurality of narrow elongated openings through which the 4b powder is transferred as desired, movable means attached to the side of said apertured plate adjacent said powder receptacle, said means comprising a plurality of substantially triangular shaped bars corresponding in number and substantially in size with said elongated openings in said plate, a solid cover for said apertured plate adapted when in closed position to immerse said bars in the powder and prevent the escape of any powder from said apertured plate and when in open position to permit said bars to convey the powder upwardly through said elongated openings and deposit it upon the solid portions of said apertured plate. a
