This invention relates to compacts and in particular to one in which powder may be carried as well as lip rouge in such a manner that the powder will be prevented from sifting out of the compact and the lip paint will be available for ready use.

A particular object of the invention is to provide a number of features that contribute to the utility and appearance of the compact and at the same time present the various compartments in such arrangement that the contents may be used as the compact is held in one hand.

Still further objects of the invention provide for the manufacture of a compact which is made from Lucite or other phenolic resin plastic which can be molded accurately so that the lid and body portions of the compact will fit closely together to prevent powder from sifting through the crevices between the lid and the box portions; to provide a lip paint compartment that is self feeding and in connection with which a paint brush may be used that will be held in position for ready use when the compact is fully opened; to provide a receptacle for a brush with which the lip paint may be applied which brush may be readily removed from the compact without soiling the fingers and without the necessity of manipulating the parts; and to provide a powder pocket in which loose powder may be held and over which may be placed a plate having a slide opening therein through which the powder may be taken on a puff.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of a compact constructed in accordance with my invention, the same being shown open.

Fig. 2 is a view in perspective looking at the under side of the slide plate with the slide partially open.

Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1 showing the arrangement and construction of the brush receptacle and the lip rouge pocket and means for closing the latter.

Referring to the drawing in detail iii indicates the box or body portion of a compact of rectangular shape presenting side walls ll, front wall [2, and rear wall IS, the latter of which at its upper edge in the opposite corners of the box it is molded to provide tubular hinge portions l4 between which closely fits tubular sleeve l5 for the purpose of receiving the ends of hinge pins I6 extending from said sleeve l5 and into the tubular portions l4.

Referring to Fig. 3, the lid or cover of the compact, indicated as at [8, is of rectangular shape and on the inner face thereof is provided with an edge flange 20 which defines a space or recess [9 in which a mirror 2| may be permanently or detachably mounted so that when the cover is opened as shown in Fig. 1, the mirror may be viewed by one using the compact. For convenience of illustration the mirror is omitted in Fig. 1 but it may be of such dimensions that it will snap within the flange 20 of the cover. The cover and box are made of suitable plastic material which affords sufficient resilience to the flange 28 to permit the mirror to be forced into place and detachably held therein. The cover It may be beveled on its outer edge and the entire compact may be ornamented as desired. In order that the lid may be held in open position at the proper angle, a lip 22 depending from the back edge thereof is arranged to engage the rear wall [3 of the box and when the lid is closed a flexible tab 23 having a recess 24 in the underside thereof is arranged to snap over and be held by the ridge 25 formed in the front wall of the. compact. When the lid is closed, the flange 20 will closely hug the insides of the walls of the box so that the powder will not sift out.

The compact box IE is molded to provide an inner wall 26 which consists of a side portion 21 3 and a front portion 28 spaced respectively from the side and front walls II and I2 of box Ill. The

21 and 28 are each notched as at 30 to provide a recess through which may pass the flange 20 of the cover when the lid is closed. The wall 21 defines, with wall H, a brush receptacle 32 while the wall 28 defines, with wall [2, a pocket 33 for lip paint indicated as at 34 in outline.

The bottom 35 of the box ill in a section within pocket 33 is thickened to provide a table portion 36, the side edges of which are curved as at 31 and 38 the former to provide a self feeding incline for the cake of lip paint 34 that is placed therein so that as the paint is used, it will gradually feed itself toward one end of the pocket 33. Ijhe curved portion 38 of the bottom wall terminates in the end of the brush receptacle .32, the bottom of which is thicker than the normal bottom .of the cover and provides a ledge 39 beyond which the lipstick brush 43 extends so that when the latter is to be removed, theindex -fi nger slid along the surface 38 will get beneath the'edge of the brush in the portion thereof that overhangs the ledge 39 so that the "brush can be easily removed. By tilting the overhanging end of the brush it may be likewise removed."'-'-Ihe paint pocket 33 is closed by the lid 4| pivoted in the walls 28 and !2 as at 42 so that it'can be swung back when the finger piece 43 is lifted to cause the end of the lid to overlie the right side of the box as shown in Fig. 9, said lid 41 being provided witha brush rest 45 so that the bristle end of the brush will lie on the lip paint pad 34. It will be noted in Fig. 4 that when the cover 18 -of the compact is' closed, the flange 2 thereof will engage the top of the lid 4! and keep-the paint pad 34 from jouncing around and becoming broken or crumbled.

The walls 21 and 23 form a powder well thin the bottom of which may be held loose powder that may be taken therefrom on a suitable pufi shown in outline in Fig. '6 as at 41, The powder is held in the well'46 through the use of a slide plate 43 which consists of a plate portion 4%! turned downwardly to provide the opposite ed ge flanges 53, side sections of which are tiirned inwardly as at 51 at the opposite sides of the plate to provide grooves in which the slide 52 may be adjusted, the latter being turned down at its upper edge as at to provide a reinforce so h t sl de hire the late .3 an Prevents seepage of powder 'therethrough.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent ls:

A compact comprising amok-led hollow plastic body, amolded plastic cover, said body and cover having cooperating hinge sleeves formed thereon and'pins for joining the body and cover in pivotal relation, said body being shaped to provide an inner wall, the side and front portions of which are spaced from the front and a side wall of said body to define -a powder well in the compact, a-plate arranged to fit closely into said well to prevent powder from sitting out of the well and a closure slide in the plate affording access to the powder in saidwell, said plate having a depending flange portion at opposite sides thereofand nubs formed in said flanges for engagement with depressions formed in 'saidinner and body walls for pivotallymounting an end of said plate therebetween.

A compact comprising a molded hollow plastic bod-y, a'molded. plastic cover, said body and cover having cooperating hinge sleeves formed thereon andpins for joining the bodyand cover in pivotal relation, said bodybeing shaped to provide an inner wall, the'side and front portions of which are spaced from the front and a side wall of said bod-y'to define. a powder well in the compact, a plate'arranged to fit closely into said well to prevent powder from sifting out of the well, a closure slide in the plate affording' acoess to the powderin said well and said cover having an annular flange on the inner face thereof for sealing engagement with the walls of said body to prevent seepage ofpowder from the compact.

5 A compact comprising a moldedhoilow plastic body, a molded plastic cover, said body and cove having cooperating'hi'nge sleeves formed thereon and; pins for joining. thelbody. and. cover in pivotal relation, said body being shaped. to

provide an inner wall, the side and front portions of which are spaced from the front and a side wall of said body to define a powder well, a brush receptacle and a lip paint pocket, the bottoms of said receptacle and pocket being at difierent levels at their intersection whereby an implement resting on the bottom of one will overhang the other and be tiltable for ready removal from the compact.

A compact comprising a molded hollow plastic body, a molded plastic cover, said body and cover having cooperating hinge sleeves formed thereon and pins for joining the body and cover in pivotal relation, said body being shaped to provide an inner wall, the side and front portions ofwhich are spaced from the front and a side wall of said body to define a powder well, a brush receptacle and a lip paint pocket, said paint pocket having an inclined end wall for urging a paint pad toward the opposite end of the pocket, a lid pivotally mounted in and forming a closure for said pocket, said lid when opened constituting a support for holding a paint applying implement in position for ready use, a finger piece on said lid and a rest on the lid in which the implement is retained against accidental displacement.

A compact comprising a molded hollow plastic body, a molded plastic cover, said body and cover having cooperating hinge sleeves formed thereon and pins for joining the body and cover in pivotal relation, said body being shaped to provide an inner wall, the side and front portions of which are spaced from the front and a side wall of said body to define a powder well, a brush receptacle, and a lip paint pocket, the bottoms Of said receptacle and pocket being at difierent levels at their intersection whereby an implement resting on the bottom of one will overhang the other, said paint pocket having an end wall shaped at its opposite sides to present sloping surfaces, one of which consititutes feed means for urging a cake of paint toward one end of the pocket and the other of which leads to a point beneath the overhanging end of said implement whereby a finger can be engaged therebeneath for easy removal of the implement from the compact.

A compact comprising a molded hollow plastic body, a molded plastic cover, said body and cover having cooperating hinge sleeves formed thereon and pins forjoining the body and cover in pivotal relation, said body being shaped to provide an inner wall, the side and front portions of which are spaced from the front and a side wall of said body to define a powder well, a brush receptacle, and a lip paint pocket, the bottoms of said receptacle and pocket being at different levels at their intersection whereby an implement resting on the bottom of one will overhang the other, said paint pocket having an end wall shaped at its opposite sides to present sloping surfaces, one of which constitutes feed means for urging a cake of paint toward one end of the pocket and the other of which leads to a point beneath the overhanging end of said implement whereby a finger can be engaged therebeneath for easy removal of the implement,

from the compact, a lid pivotally mounted in and forming a closure for said pocket, said lid when opened constituting a support for holding said implement in position for ready use, and a rest on the lid in which the implement is retained against accidental displacement.

A compact comprising a molded hollow plastic body, a molded plastic cover, said body and cover having cooperating hinge sleeves formed thereon and pins for joining the body and cover in pivotal relation, said body being shaped to provide an inner wall, the side and front portions of which are spaced from the front and a side wall of said body to define a powder well, a brush receptacle and a lip paint pocket, a lid pivotally mounted in and forming a closure for said paint pocket, said lid when opened constituting a support for a lip paint applying implement, and an annular flange on said cover for engagement with the said lid when the latter is closed to prevent jarring of a cake of paint disposed in said paint pocket.
