WALTER IfORANSKI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO NATIONAL TRADING 00.,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
\ VANITY casn.
Application filed February 5,1926. Serial 1Y0. 86,315.
My inventionrelates to'vanity cases and has among its other; objects the production of devices of the kinddescribed which are extremelyneat and attractive in appearance, convenient, durable, compact, and are quickly and easily refilled.
A particular object. of the invention is to provide devices of the kind described having improved means formounting mirrors therein.
Another particular object of the invention;
is; to provide devicesof the kind described having improved means for holding powder,
rouge or the like. i Z
One form of the invention is en'ibodied in a vanity case comprising a box for holding removed from the "flange as a unit a fresh for use take of rouge may be inserted in the annular flange. 1N hen the ring is eplaced the rouge is securely held against accidental displace: mcnt relative to the lid and may be concealed beneaththe mirror when the vanity caseis opened. i v r Many other objectsand advantages of the constructionherein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in: the art from the disclosure herein given. 1
To this'end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown aud described,
and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,
characters indicate like or corresponding parts:
Fig. 1 is a view inelevation of avanity case embodying my invention, the vanity case being shown as it appears when open Fig. 2
tion wherein it permits access to wherein like reference is a sectiontaken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; a m1rror forming part of 1inproved vanity case being shown ma pos1-" Fig. 3 a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a Fig. :2, afmirror jcarrying member vbeing shown in a changed position. i e
In the drawings, I have illustrated a )re{ ferred form of the invention embodied in a compact or vanity case, which preferably comprises two ormoremembers hinged to: each other. Thus, 1 preferably provide a box 10 having a lid 11 which is secured to thebox by a hinge 12. 'In the, illustrated embodin'ient of the invention the box 10 is adorned-to holda quantity of finely divided powderwhichbecomes a firmcompact mass under pressure. The box 10 preferably comprises .a substantially cylindrical wall 14, a detachable back 15 and'a. perforate member 16, the back 15 being screw-threaded section :taken on line i tof to the wall 14. The construction is such that the perforate member 16 may be rotated relative to the wall 14 to causethelpowde'r to be forced fromjthe box--10 through the per- :lorations of. the member 16, the detachable back 15 being removed when the boxfis' to' be refilled with powder. Thesurface 18 of j themember '16 may. be concaveor otherwise, adapted to accommodate apowder puif'19. It is to beunderstood that Iain limited to the above descnibed details of construction only to' theextent indicatedin theappended claims, as, in someforms of the in vention; Ijmayprefer to provide a box adapted to'holdpowder intake or other form. v r
The lid 11 preferablycomprisesa top wall 20, the wall 20 being preferably formed with acoiicave inner surface as illustrated in Fig.
2. Preferably formed integral with the wall 20 an integral cyl'indricalflange 22 adapted to engagea shoulder 24 formed upon the cylindrical wall 14-. It will be noted that the flange 22 telescopes over a portion of the cylindrical wall 14.
The lid'is' providedwith means for hold-- ing acake of rouge or the equivalent, the means preferably comprising a plate 25 positioned within the lid andcentrally a1per tured so that an upstanding annular flange- 27 maybe providedto form a cl1amber 28 which accommodates a cake of rouge 29cm ried by a dished disc 30' resting againstthe inner surface of the wall 20. (See Figsl'Q."
and 4.) Obviously, I may dispense with the disc 30 if I so desire. The rouge 29 is held against lateral displacement by the flange 27 and is retained in the chamber 28 by a ring ea hereinafter described.
An annular flange 33 is preferably formed at the outer edge of the plate 25 to frictionally engage the inner surface of the flange 22 so that the plate 25 may be readily'secined in the lid by pressing it into place.
The aforementioned ring 34L frictionally engages the outer surface of the upstanding annular flange27 and is constructed with an inwardly extending flange 35 or the equivalent engageable with the marginal portions of the rouge 29 to prevent accidental displacement of the rouge relative to the lid. At one point the flange 35 is formed with a lug or lip 37 for holding a powder puff 38.
Carried by the ring 34 is a substantially U-shaped member 39'formed from a length of wire which has its end pivotally mounted in the ring 34 and deformed'as at 4:0 to prevent withdrawal of the U-shaped member from the ring. The annular flange 27 may be provided with slots 42 to accommodate the deformed ends of the U-shaped member 39.
'Pivotally secured to the U-shaped member 39 intermediate its ends is a mirror frame 43 which comprises a back 44: or the equivalent formed with an eye 45, the eye -15 pivotally securing the frarne el to the member 39. The back Q44 cooperates with a bezel 47 to hold a' mirror 48.. A finger-piece or lug -19 is formed upon the bezel 47 and provides means'whereby the mirror frame and mirror may be easily and quickly withdrawn from the lid lfl, the construction of the member 39 and the mirror frame' l--lbeing such that they may be brought into the positions wherein they are shown in dotted lines in Fig. It will be noted thatthe member 39 is adapted to fit snugly'around the ring and that the mirror frame may be inserted in the lid 11 in such manner that willrnot interfere when the lid is brought into its closed position.
Fig. 2 illustrates one of the positions into which the mirror may be brought to make the rouge accessible to the usev the mirror being also conveniently disposed for the user. It may be mentioned that the rouge may be concealed beneath the mirror if the user so desires, the case being then opened to expose the surface 18 and the mirror as illustrated in 1. i
The supply of rouge 29 may be readily renewed by first withdrawing the ring 34 from the/annular flange This is done by pulling upon the member 89 until the ring 34 slips oil" of the annular flange 27. The
. a member is not Withdrawn from the lid 11 during this operation as the'member 25 and the lid 11 are so proportioned that there is a tighter fit between them than there is between the annular flange 27 and the ring 34. After the ring 34 has been removed from the annular flange 32, a refill of rouge may be inserted in the annular flange, 32, the ring 34: being then replaced upon the annular flange.
. Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact-form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A vanity case comprising a box menr' ber, a lid member hinged to said box member, an annulus frictionally secured to said lid member, a second annulus frictionally secured to said first-mentioned annulus for retaining a cake of powder therein, a mirror, and means carriedv by said second annulus for holding the mirror.
2. A vanity case comprising a box member, a lid member for said box member, an annulus frictionally secured to said lid memher, a second annulus frictionally secured to said first-mentioned annulus for retaining a cake of powder therein, a mirror, and means pivoted to said second annulus for holding the mirror. 7
