Description

Dec. 9, 1924- w. B. MARBLE l VANITY CASE Filed June 7, 1923 Patented Dec. 9, 1924.
UNITED STATES WALTER B. MARBLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
VANITY CASE.
Application filed June 7,
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, WALTER B. MARBLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vanity cases.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a compact article of the character described and a device'so constructed and arranged that toilet accessories such, for instance, as rouge and powder compacts contained therein will be readily accessible.
Another object of the invention is to provide a vanity case with a detachable container whereby the container can be removed and refilled or replaced by a filled container.
Another object of the invention is to provide an article of the character described that is simple in construction, comprises few parts, is attractive in appearance and can be economically manufactured.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the following specification taken in connection with the drawings, which form a part of this application, and in which- Fig. 1 is a plan view of a portion of the vanity case, the cover of the case being open.
Fig. 2 is an elevational view of the case with the covers in open position and the 35 container also swung to a position intermediate the covers.
Fig. 8 is a. sectional elevation on an enlarged scale and partly broken away showing the detachable swivel mounting for 40 the container, the container being shown in its lowered position in the lower casing member.
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation broken away similar to Fig. 3, but showing the container 45 in elevated position, in which position it may be removed from its pivot pin, and
Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation of the container showing the slot therein for receiving the pivot pin.
The invention briefly described comprises a vanity case consisting of a base member and cover member and a container mounted intermediate the base and cover and having means for securing thereto a plurality of 55 toilet accessories such as compacts. The

cover member has secured thereto a mirror and the container or intermediate member is detachably swiveled on a pivot pin and preferably has secured thereto a pair of compacts such as a rouge compact and a powder compact arranged back to back or facing outwardly. Either of these compacts may be used by turning the intermediate member on its swivel and when desired the ;containercan be detached from its pivot pin for the purpose of renewing the compacts or a filled container can be inserted in the place of the used container. Further details of the invention will appear from the following description.
The vanity case illustrated comprises a base member 10 and cover member 11 hinged together by complementary hinge members 12 and 13 connected by a pivot pin 14. The cover member 11 has mounted therein a mirror 15.
A container 16 is mounted intermediate the members and carries a pair of compacts such as a powder compact 17 and rouge compact 18. In assembling these parts, the rouge compact is placed first in the container and extends through the central opening 19 thereof and the powder compact is placed back to back with the rouge compact and faces in an opposite direction. One face of the container has formed thereon an outwardly extending lug 20 to facilitate lifting the container.
The container 16 is detachably mounted in the casing on a pivot pin 21 which is pivoted on the pin 14:. The pin 21 has a head 22 formed thereon and the container has a slot 23 with an enlarged portion 24 at one end for receiving the head 22 of the pin 21. When a container is to be mounted in the casing, the head 22 of the pin 21 is inserted through the enlarged portion 2 of the container and the container is then moved to a position in which the pin 21 is disposed in the slot 23.
If desired, means may be provided for holding the pin 21 in the position shown in Fig. 4 and in the particular form of the invention illustrated this means comprises a spring strip 25 secured to the casing 10 and adapted to engage a notch 26 formed in the pivot ring 27 of the pin 21.
Any desired means may be provided for retaining the powder compact 17 in the container and in the form of the invention illustrated this. means comprises .a split ri ng 30 adapted to seat'in an annular groove 31 formed in the container Wall.
A shoulder 32 mayloe: tormedonthe in: tier Wall of the casing member and is adapted to engage an annular shoulderfi? formed on the container for supporting the container in the base member 10.
In using the vanity case hereinbefore described-the cover member li'is swung 'to open position and either the powder compact. or rouge compact may be used by swinging the container on its swivel pin 21. YNhen the user desires to remove the jontainer' in order .to remove the compact orfsnbstitute a filled container the container ,is firstraised to the position shown injFig. fl nd i s' thereafter rotated "until "the pin "21 is is'pe'setl in the enlarged portioi'if24 0f the slot The container can then beremoved "from: the andfthe head 522 will pass with quell th Portio 2,410fthe 3 Although: onespecific embodiment of the I invention has been particularly shown-and described, itw'ill be understoodthat the in- ,yent-ion is cap able of modification and that changes in; the censtruction andthe arrangen'ient of the various cooperating parts may be made Without departing from the spirit OETSCOPG; of theinvention, as expressed in the following claims.
