VANITY BOX.
Application filed fieptember 26, 1922- Serial No. 590,573.
T 0 all iii/ 20m. it may concern:
is it known that I, Fnnonnion Gonu'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Vanity Boxes; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part .of this specification.
This invention relates, generally, to improvements in, cases or boxes adapted to contain face-powders, cosmetics, and the like; and the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel and simply constructed vanity box or case, comprising a main body providing a compartment having means therein adapted to hold, a rouge compact and puff, or the like, with which means is connected in a hinge-like or pivoted manner, a frame carrying another member for the reception of a compact facepowder said lattercompartment being adapted to be lowered into the main compartment of the box or case, and enclosed therein by aclosing lid or coverconnected with said main compartment, when not in use, but when said lid or cover is opened, being adapted to be raised above the said main compartment, to enable the user to get at the rouge compact and puff contained in said main compartment.
With the purposes of the invention hereinabove set forth, and other objects of the invention which will be apparent from the following detailed description of the same, the said invention consists, primarily, in the novel vanity box hereinafter set forth; and, the said invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations as well as of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claims, which are appended to and which form an essential of the present invention, the various members of the box being represented 1n their closed relation; and Figures 3 and 4: are a top view and a side elevation, respectively, of the vanity box or case, with the various members of the same being represented in their opened-out relation. I
Figure 5 is a longitudinal vertical sectional representation of the vanity box or case, with the variousparts of the same also represented in their openedout relation; and Figure 6 is a transverse vertical section of the same, said section being takenon line 6-6 in said Figure 5. I
Figure, 7 is a plan view of the. rouge and puii' retaining means removed from the main body of the box or case; Figure 8 is a face view of the frame with which the movable face-powder compactcarrying member is used; and Figure 9 is a plan view of the rouge puif used with the means represented in said Figure 7. Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the said above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates a complete vanity box, showing one embodi ment of the principles of the present invention, the'same in the present instance, and as shown in the accompanying drawings, consisting of a main body-member or shell comprising a base 2, and circular side-wall 3 formed witha reduced receiving portion, as
4, for receiving the flange 6 of a lid or cover 5, suitably connected with the said side-wall 3 by means of any suitable hinge-connection, as 7 The said main body-member or shell and the said lid or cover may be made in any desired form of exterior shape or contour, to provide, when closed together,- the desired ornamental effect and appearance, and, furthermore, at. the proper locations, the side-wall 3 of the main bOdy member or shell and the flange 6 of the lid or cover are respectively provided with any suitably formed catch-devices, as S and 9, adapted to be brought into; locked registration with each other for maintaining the closed relation of the lid or cover with the said main body-member of the shell or box, as will be clearly understood. Suitably disposed within the said lid or cover may be a mirror 10,
the latter being maintained in its operative position within said lid or cover by means of a suitable retaining ring 1.1, substantially as shown in Figures 3 and 5 of the drawings.
Suitably disposed within the portion 12 of the said main bodyanember or shell, and held therein by frictional contact, or otherwise. as will be evident from an inspection of Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings, is the rouge-compact 18 and rouge-puff 14 receiving means, which consists, essentially, of a base-member or tray 15 having a surrou1 1d ing side-wall 16, said side-wall being in turn surrounded by an outwardly extending hori- Zontal' flange 17, the marginal edge 18 of which corresponds to the inner contour of the side-wall 3 of the main body-member or shell, and with which side-wall the said edge 18 in the present case is in removablefrictional retaining engagement. As shown more particularly from an inspection of Figures 3, 5, 6 and- 7 of the drawings, the said outwardly extending horizontal flange 17 is formed with an annular depression, as 19, in the opposite sides of which are formed oppositely located perforations or holes, as 20. The reference-character 21 indicates a yoke-shaped frame, usually made of flat metal, said frame being provided with a centrally disposed receiving portion 22, and at its freelends, the said frame 21 being provided with outwardly extending pintles or journal-members 23, adapted to be inserted in the previously mentioned perforations or holes 20, for oscillatorily connecting said frame 21 with the flange 1,7 of the rougecarrying means, the said yoke-shaped frame beingof such configuration, so that wheiu the various parts or" the vanity box are, brought into their closedrelatio hiit will enter apolilion the previously mentioned depression 9 d ill' is eneath t surpeli' e the a l s w lrbe i a y nde s od.-
The shell or. casing for the reception of the powder-compact 24; consists, essentially, of a base 25 and an upwardly extending side-wall 26, saidbase 25, being provided upon its lower end and at one side of the base, at or near the marginal edge, with a means of pivotal connection, as 27, usually in the form of twomembers, as indicatedin Figure 5 which are brought intopivotal e1n-.
bracing relation with the receiving portion 220i tlieyohe-shaped frame 'llliefassem;
blage and means of oscillatory connection betvv'eenthe various parts of the vanity box, as hereinabove described, permits thepowder, compact containing element to be. readily, rilised above the rouge containing-element, as c powder-compact element to be lowered, so
will rest directly above the rouge and rouge rly indicated in the severalfiguresof the drawings; and, similarly, when the lid or cover: Offthe vanity box is, to.- be, closed down, upongthe shell oftlielbox, said means oi oscillatory connection permits thesaid;
pulf containing means, in such a position that it will not project above the marginal edge of the sidewall of the main bodymember or shell of the vanity-box, so that there will be no interference with the lid or cover, when closing the latter.
From the above description it will be noted that the powder and roug'e carrier constitutes aunit complete in itself and inde pendent from the main box or outer casing whereby it is easily removable from the latter, and consequently the unit may be made and sold separately as a refill for vanity boxes.
I am fully aware, that my present invention is capable of modifications, and that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the detai lsot the construction of the said parts, as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the clauses of the claims which are appended thereto. Hence, I do not limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the said devices and parts, as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details ofthe construction 01 the said parts as illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings.
