D T b all whom it mag/concern." v
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. HARMAN,
-a citizen ofjthe United'States, residing at Glen 'Rid e,-in the county of Essex and- 5. State of ew Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double Compartment Powder-Boxes; and I. do hereby declarethe following-to bea full, clear, .and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to 'make and use the same, reference being had to theacc'ompany- Y ing drawings, and to characters of, reference marked thereon, which form a part of this '15 specification. j j V a p The present invention relates, generally,
to improvements in casesor. boxes adapted -to contain face-powders, cosmetics, and the like; and, the invention has reference, more particularly, .to a novel construction of double compartment powder-box or case,
adapted to hold powders androuge in the 3 small bulk; the same comprising a pair of shells or body members hinged together so as to mutually close one upon the other, each shell or'body member providing a compartfment adapted'to hold a compact, and being 'further provided'with means for retaining the compacts in place, there being combined in novel mutually connected relation to said shell or body membersa'n intermediate mir- 'ror memberor plate, w'hich also serves as a partition between the respective comp'artments when said shells orbody members are closed together. i
Other objects of the .present, invention, not at this time more particularly enui'rier 5 ated, will be clearly understood f om the following detailed description of the same.
YVith the'various objects of the present inventio'n in view, the same consists, primarily, in the novel construction of double com partment powder-box or case hereinafterset forthg'and, the invention consists, further more, in the novel arrangements a-ndcombinations of the various devices and'pa'rts, as well as in the details of the construction 5 of said parts, all of which will be more fully described in, the following specification, and
Specification of Letters rat gent; Patented .A pp 1icat'ion filed J'uly 6, 1920. Serial No. 894,013.
then finally embodied in Nov. so, 1920,
pended thereto. s n
The invention is, fully; illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which .F,1gur'e 'l-is a side elevation of'the novel construction of double compartment powderbox orcase made; according to'and embodyng the princlples of this invention, the same being shown inits closed condition; Fig; 2 1s a central vertical section through the .the claims: ap- I closed powder-box or case; .Fig. 3 is.a,plan I viewof said novel double compartment'powder-box or ca se in its opened condition,
4 is a vertical section, taken on line section of a portion of the novel powderbox or case'illustrating a slightly" modified form of intermediate combined mirror and partition-member for employment therewith.
-in said ,Fig. 3; and Fig.5 is a detail vertical Similar characters of reference".are employed "in all of the hereinabove: described views, to lndicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to said drawings, the reference-character 1 indicates the completelnovelf double compartment powdeisbo'x 'or case 'madeaccording to and embodying the principles of the present inventiomthe same comprising'a lower shell or body member 2 and an upper shell or body member 3, the former providing a compact holding compartments andthe latter providing a similar compact holding compartment Said respective shells or body members'2 and 3. may be made in any desired form of exterior shape or contour, to provide, when closed together, the desired ornamental effect and appearance.
Said lower-shell Qrbody niemberQ is provided at its open'periphery or .mouth with an inwardly off-set vertical: flange or rim 6 which telescopes into the open end of said upper shell or body member 3, when the latter is moved into closed relation to the former, thus preventing lateral displacement or separation of the said shells or'bodymembers when so closed together;
The saidshells or body members 2 and 3 are mutually pivoted together, to swing apart one from the other, by means of a hinge mem ber 7, suitably secured to the adjoining sides thereof; The fiangeor rim 6 of said shell or member'2 is provided, at a point diametrically opposite the hinge connection, with an outwardly pressed catch nosing 8, and, in
. like manner, the marginal portion of the side wall of said shell or body member 3 is provided witha correspondingly located catch loo receiving socket 9, which snaps over saidof white face-powc er, and the other shell or ment of body-member, e. 9., the shell 3, is adapted to hold seated within its compartment 5, a com pact 11 comprised of rouge or the like.
Each shell or body member is provided in connection with its side walls, and suitably located with reference to the size or thickness of the compacts, with two or more retaining members 12 adapted to project inwardly into their compartments to engage the compacts therein, and to thereby retain the same against accidental displacement from proper seated relation within said compartments. As shown in the drawings, said retaining members12, may consist, in one form, of lugs or teats forced outwardly from the inner side wall surface of each shell or body-memher to project into their respective compartments so that the compacts may be sprung downwardly and beneath the same when inserted within said compartments. While said retaining members 12 are convenient, I do not necessarily limit my invention totheir employment, since they, per 36, may 'not only be widely varied in mechanical form and arrangement, but may also be omitted entirely, and in such case, the compacts secured by cementitious substance or otherwise.
Thecompartment of each shell or body member is preferably of suflicient depth to permit of an individual powder-puff 13 for each compact to be inclosed with the latter so as to be ready for use at all times.
The reference-character 14 indicates a combined mirror 'and partition member arranged to dispose itself intermediate the respective compartments 4 and 5 when said shells or body members 2 and 3 are closed together.
Said mirror and partition member 14 conform-in outline to the mouth shape or meet mg ends of the shells or body- members 2 and 3, and the same is provided with a hinge-ear 15, which projects from its periphery, and whichis pivotally engaged upon the pintlc of the hinge member 7, thus permitting the m rror or partition member 14 to be turned over to cover either one or the other of the compartments of said shells or body-members, when the same are in opened relation.-
Preferably said mirror or partition member 14 comprises a plate or disk of metal highly polished to provide the same with mirrorlike surfaces on each side, which will readily reflect the countenance of the user of the powder-boxer case. In the drawings the said mlrror' and partition member 14 is shown to be of concavo-convex form, thus providing on one side a concave mirrorsurraceam on the other a convex mirror surface, which add re'atly to the convenience of the'device. hile said concavoeconvex form of mirror and partition member involves a .point of novelty, and usefulness, I do not entirely limit myself to the employsuch form, since it will be obvious that a straight plane surfaced member may be utilized if desired. Furthermore, I do not limit myself to the employment necessarily of the plate or disk form of mirror or partition member l4, as above described, since I may employ ordinary glass mirrors 16 (see Fig. 5), supported by asuitable' bindingframe 17, having a hinge-ear 18 for connecting the'same plvotally 'uponthe pintle of the hinge member 7, so that in such form the substantial interrelation'of the same to the respective shell or body members will be retained, and the general purposes of the From the above description it will be ap- 1 parent that the present-invention provides a very neat, attractive and conpact double compartment face powder and .rou'ge' case, which may not only be rendered very ornamental in appearance, but which, embodies in small space'every convenience to the user; and the same-may be carried in the hand bag of the ,user without danger of the escape therefrom of the materials contained therein.
I am aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction thereof, without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the foregoing specification, and as defined in the appended claims. Hence, I do notlimit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations-of the said devices and parts as described in said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
I claim 2-,-
LA. double compartment powder-box comprising .a lower shell providing one compact-receiving compartment, an upper shell providing the other compact-receiving compartment, a hinge means pivotally interconnecting said shells so that the same may be mutually closed one upon another, andsaid lo'wer shell having an inwardly oif-set vertical flange, portion adapted to telescope into the mouth of the upper shell when said shells are closed together.
2. A .double' compartment powder-box comprising a lower shell providing one compact-receiving compartment, an upper shell providing the other compact-receiving compartment, a hinge means pivotally interconnecting said shells so thatthe s ame may tend between the compartments and within;
'said'shells when the latter are closed to: gether. I
3. A- double -compartment powder-box comprising a lower shell providing one compact-receiving compartment, an upper shell providing the other compact-.recelving compartment a hinge means pivotally intercon v necting said shells-so, that the same may be. mutually closed one iipon another, said lowerx shell having aninwardly off-set vertical flange portion adapted'to' telescope into the m'outh of the-upper, shell when; said shells a'refc'losed together, a combi'ned mirror and partition member pivotally associated with said hinge imeans to extend between the compartments of'said shells when thelatter 'are closed together and-each compartment having retaining means adapted-to engage ,tical flange portion adapted and holdpowderand rouge compacts re spectively in said compartments. I
4. A double compartment powder-box comprising a lower shell providing one compact-receiving compartment,'an upper shell providingv the other compact-receiving compartment, a hinge means pivotallyinterconnecting said shells so that the same'may be mutually closed one upon another, said lower shell'having an inwardly oil-set verto telescope into the mouth of thevupper.
said shells ar'e closed together, a combined mirror and partition member pivotally as.- 'sociated .with said-hinge means, to' extend between the compartments of 'sai'dvshells when the lat ter 'areclos'ed' together, said mirror and 'cavjo-convexeshape. V
