VANITY CASE.

This invention relates to vanity cases of that type which ordinarily contain powder, a powder puff and mirror and are'adapted to be carried in the pocket or in hand bags.
In the past the cosmetic powders used in vanity cases of this type have been pressed in the form of a compact and the puff had to be wiped across the surface of the compact to cause powder to adhere thereto. This construction has certain disadvantages, one of which is that, if the vanity case is accidently dropped, the compact cake is broken.
In a vanity case according to the invention the amount of powder which is to be applied to the puff is controlled by a dispensing device. This dispensing device generally consists of two cups, one screw threaded within the other with powder therebetween. One of the cups has slots cut therein so that when it is rotated, a predetermined amount of powder will be forced out of the slots which is available. for taking up by the powder puff. A valve dplate may be provided to close the slots if esired.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown for purposes of illustration one form of arrangement embodying the invention in which:

In the following description and in the claims parts will be identified by specific names for convenience of expression, but they are intended to be as generic in their application to similar parts as the art will permit.
Like reference characters denote like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
Referring now to the drawing, the vanity case is composed of a casing base 1 and casing'cover 2 hingedly connected thereto. The casing cover comprises an annular cylindrical side 3 and a dish shaped top 4, the edge of the dish shaped top being provided with an annular bead 5.- The cylindrical side 3 is secured within the annular bead 5 in any desired manner as by friction or soldering.
Within the dished shape top 2 is the usual mirror 6. The mirror is held in position by the bezel holding ring 7 which is adapted to be sprung into position against the mirror and against the cylindrical side 3. On one edge of the side 3 a tongue of metal is left suflicient to be curled to form the knuckle 8.
Now referring to the casing base it comprises a dish shaped member 1' having an annular bead 10. At one point of the circumference this annular bead 10 is cut away to provide space for the knuckle 8. The annular bead 10 forms an. annular bead channel 11 in which is positioned a pintle 12.
This pintle is threaded through the knuckle 81and is positioned within the bead channel 1 Positioned within the casing base is an inverted base cup 14. This base cup comprises a base plate 15 supported by an annular depending wall 16 provided with external screw threads 17. The lower rim of the depending wall 16 has secured thereto an outwardly and upwardly turned annular positioning portion 18 which engages the sides of the casing base 1 and also the knuckle 8. The positioning portion 18 is flattened as at 19 to accommodate the knuckle 8 and by enga ing it holds the pintle 12 in the bead c annel 11. The,
knuckle is thus securely held in position, the only movement it being permitted to make is that of rotation about the pintle 12. Upon the edge of the positioning portion opposite the knuckle is an outwardly projecting lip 21 for a purpose hereinafter described.
The base cup 14 may be secured within the casing base 1 in any desired manner, as by friction or by soldering. The upper surface of the base plate 15 is provided with a series of radial ribs 22 to provide a roughened surface which will prevent the powder in the powder chamber 23 from being turned as a whole when the adjustable cup 24 is rotated.
Adjustably secured to the base cup 14 is the adjustable cup 24. This adjustable cup is provided with internal screw threads 25 so that it can be screw-threaded down upon the base cup 14. The top 30 of the adjustable cup 24 is provided with a dished space 26 which accommodates the valve plate 27 and also provides space for carrying the powder puff 28. The outer wall of the annuar head 29 surrounding this dished space is provided with a knurled edge 81 to aid the user in turning the adjusted cup 24. The top 30 of the adjustable cup 24 is provided with a series of radial slots 32. The valve plate 27 is also provided with a series of radial slots 33 which are adapted to be brought into and out of register with the slots 32. The valve plate is pivoted to the top of the adjustable cup by means of a rivet 34 and is provided with a projection 35 by which the valve plate 27 may be rotated by the fingers of the user to bring the slots 32 and 33 in and out of register with each other. The top 15 of the adjustable cup is provided with two projections 36 and 37 which cooperate with the projection 35 to limit the movement thereof. \Vhen the projection 35 is in engagement with the projection 36 the slots are in register and powder from the chamber 23 will be allowed to pass out through the slots. lVhen the projection 35 is in engagement with its projection 36 the slots are out of register and no powder can leave the chamber 23.
It will easily be seen that, when the powder chamber 23 is filled with powder and the adj ustable cup 24 is screwed down upon the base cup 14 no powder will pass thru the slots 32 even though the slots 33 in the valve plate 27 are in register, providing the adjustable cup 24 is not moved relatively to the base cup 14. This is due to the fact that when the powder is enclosed in a space just large Enough to accommodate it, it tends not to If powder is desired, the user turns the adjustable cup 24 by grasping it by the knurled edge 31 causing a scraping action of the edges of slots 32 which will cause some of the powder to pass out through the slots 32 and into the dished space 26 for use as shown in Fig. 6. Sometimes it may be advantageous to oscillate the adjustable cup 24 back and forth slightly on its screw threads instead of screwing it down upon the base cup 14 in order to obtain powder. As the powder is consumed the adjustable cup 24 will be screwed down further upon the base cup 14 always keeping the powder chamber 23 just large enough to contain the powder, thereby preventing any escape of the powder through the slots even though they are in register with the slots 33, provided there is no relative movement between the adjustable cup 24 and the base cup 14.
The purpose of the valve plate 27 is not to prevent escape of the powder after the powder has been positioned for use within the powder chamber 23, because, as pointed out above, due to the fact that powder will not [low when the container is just large enough to contain it, it will not escape through the slots 32 unless the adjustable cup 24 and base cup 14 are moved relatively to each other. The function of the valve plate is to close the slots 32 when the vanity case is being initially filled or refilled with powder.
In order to place powder in the vanity case the adjustable cup 24 must be completely disengaged from the base cup 14 and inverted so that the cup is upright. This is then filled with loose powder and it is to prevent this loose powder at this time from leaking out through the slots 32 that the valve plate 27 is provided. To reassemble the parts the casing base 1 must also be inverted from the position shown and the adjustable cup 24 and base cup 14 may now be threaded together. When the powder is once posi tioned within the chamber 23 no more leaking through the slots will occur unless the adjustable cup 24 is rotated relative to the base cup 14.
The inside of side 3 of the cover 2 is provided with a notch 38 which cooperates with the outturned lip 21 to hold the cover in closed position. The notch 38 may be formed by striking out a portion of the side 3.
It will be seen that this construction is extremely simple and that a positive and voluntary dispensing of powder is obtained without the use of any spring parts or any other means for enclosing the powder except the adjustable engagement between the base cup and the adjustable cup which is also used for the purpose of dispensing.
\Vhile I have shown and described and have pointed out in the annexed claims certain novel features of my invention, it will be understood that various omissions. substitutions and changes in the forms and details of the device illustrated and in its operation may be made by those skilled in the contents, said cup art without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. A vanity box comprising a cup and a cooperating member forming a chamber thercbetween, said cup having a dispensing perforation therein, means whereby said member is movable relative to said cup to change the size of said chamber and thereby dispense the contents thru said perforation, and avalve plate pivoted to said cup for effectively closing said perforation to prevent escape of the contents of said chamber when filling said cup with said and member being detachable for filling.
2. A vanity box comprising a pair of cooperating members defining a chamber therebetwecn, means whereby one member is rotated relative to the other to change the size of said'chamber from maximum to zero volume, one of said members having a radial slot therein providing a cutting edge extending substantially from the center to the perimeter thereof, said chamber adapted to hold a substantially loose cosmetic compressed by said cooperating members whereby, on relative rotation of said members, said cutting edge shaves said cosmetic and dispenses the part shaved through said radial slot.
3. A vanity box comprising a stationary base member and a movable upper member defininga powder chamber therebetween,
- means for changing the size of said chamber by rotating said upper member, said upper member having a perforated top surrounded by an upstanding knurled edge defining an outer dished space, said dished space acting to hold powder passed thru said perforated top.
4. A vanity" box comprising a pair of cooperating members defining a powder chamber therebetween, means whereby one member is rotated relative to the other to change the size of said chamber, one of said members being perforated. the other of said members having radial ribs on its inner base.
5. A vanity box comprising a base member and an upper member defining a powder chamber therebetween, lneans whereby one member is movable relative to the other to change the size of said'chamber, said upper member having a perforated top which has an outer dished space, a valve plate in said dished space pivoted to said top for opening and closing said perforated top.
6. A vanity box comprising a base cup having a. radially ribbed base plate surrounded by an annular dependingvwall which is screw threaded, an adjustablecup whose inner wall is screw threaded to engage the screw threads on said base cup, the
outside top of said adjustable cup having a dished space, a valve plate in said dished space and pivoted to the centerofsaid top,said top having radial slots therein, said valve plate also having radial slots therein to be moved into and out of register with said radial slots, whereby. when said adjustable cup is screwed onto said base cup,the powder is squeezed thru said slots into said dished space.
7. A vanity box comprising a base cup having a base plate surrounded by an annular depending wall, an adjustable cup having a depending annular wall, means on said annular depending walls, whereby the size of the space between said cups may be changed, one of said cups having perforations therein. i
8. A vanity box having a casing base with a beaded edge, said beaded edge providing an annular channel, said beaded edge having a cut-away portion, a cover having a hinge knuckle lying in said cut-away portion, a pintle extending thru said knuckle and lying in said channel, a base cup in said casing base, said base cup having a base plate supported by an annular depending wall, said wall having an upwardly and outwardly turned annular positioning portion engaging said casing base and bearing against said knuckle to hold said pintle in said channel, and means for holding said base cup within said casing base.

A vanity box having a casing base with a beaded edge, said beaded edge providing an annular channel, said beaded edge having a cut-away portion, a cover having a hinge knuckle lying in said cut-away portion, a pintle extending thru said knuckle and lying in said channel, a base cup-in said casing base, said base cup having a base plate sup ported by an annular depending wall, said wall having an upwardly and outwardly turned annular positioning portion engaging said casing base and bearing against said knuckle to hold said pintle in said channel, and means for holding said base cup within said casing base, and cooperating means on said cover and on said base cup for holding said cover shut.

base cup insaid casing base, said base cup having a radially roughened base plate supported by an annular depending wall which is screw threaded, said wall having an upwardly and outwardly turned annular ositioning portion engaging said casing ase and bearing againstv said knuckle to hold said'pintle in said channel, means for holding said base cup within said casing base, said positioning portion having a pro ecting lip to cooperate with said notch to hold said cover shut, an adjustable cup whose inner wall is screw threaded to engage the screw threads on said base cup, the outside top of said adjustable cup having a dished space, a valve plate in said dished space and pivoted to the center of said top, said top having radial slots therein, said valve plate also having radial slots therein.
11. A vanity box comprising a base cup having a base plate surrounded by an integral annular depending wall, an adjustable cup having a depending annular wall, and means whereby the size of the space be tween said cup may be changed, one of said cups having perforations therein.

A vanity box comprising a base member having a base plate, an adjustable cup member having a depending annular wall cooperating with and engaging said plate to form a powder chamber, means whereby the size of said chamber may be changed from its maximum volume to zero volume, one of said members having perforations therein.
13. A vanity box comprising a casing base having a bottom with an upstanding annular edge, a base member having a base plate, an adjustable cup member having a depending annular wall cooperating with and engaging said plate to form a powder chamher, said base member having an integral portion depending from said plate, means whereby the size of said chamber may be changed, and means for securing said depending portion to said bottom so as to allow space between said portion and said ed e for said annular wall.
