To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT J. HnxDnN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the cit of Chicago, in the county of Cook and the tate of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. l

This invention has reference more particularly to an improved box or container and cover therefor which is particularly adapted to display the contents thereof and 'facilitate handling of the box.

T heobfect of the invention is to provide a box for display purposes such as displaying cigars, etc., in which the cover may be folded or collapsed so that it does not interfere with the view of thecontents of adjoining boxes.

Another object of the invention is to `provide a box or container having a collapsible or folding cover and in which a folding section of the cover serves as a brace or bracket to hold the cover in a convenient open position.

.Another object of the invention is to provide a box or container with a folding or collapsible cover wherein a section of the cover folds down and connects with the box so as to hold the lid in the desired open position and also serves to furnish a secure grip or handle for the box.

Another object ofthe invention is to provide a box or container wherein the sides, end, bottom and top of thecontainer'are so constructed and arranged to provide a box of superior construction.

This invention also has other objects which will appear from the following speciiication andthe accompanying drawings.

The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cigar box embodying my improvements and showing the cover in the open position.

This invention is especially adapted although not necessarily limited to use in boxes used for display purposes such as the display of cigars, etc., wherein a plurality of boxes which l have indicated generally at 1, herein, are arranged as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, close together and with their covers open so as to display the contents thereof.

The covers, such as have been employed heretofore, when open, `occupy positions somewhat as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and almost completely obstruct the view of ,the contents of the adjoining box.

In my invention, however, I construct the cover of the box in the two sections 2 and 3, which are secured together by a flexible strip of material. Il, which not only serves to hinge the parts together `and permit folding thereof, butalso serves to seal the joint between the two parts of the lid and effect a tight closure. These two sections 2 and 3, together, form a lid of sutlicient size to cover the box and the outer edge of the section 2, vis secured by means of the strip 5, of flexible material to the'upper end of one of the sides of the box so as Vto provide a hinge connec tion of the cover with the box. Tt will be noted that the section 2 of the cover extends over the upper edge of the side to which it is connected, and the lid, unless otherwise prevented may be opened on its hinge a distance of 180 degrees. 4

The section 3, of the cover is made somewhat wider than the section 2, so that only a small section of the cover will project `above the box when it is opened, and also for the further reason that the increased width of the section 3, permits the free edge thereof to be folded down against the side of the box as shown in Fig. 9, and it may be secured to the side of the box by means of a tack or small nail 6, so as to prevent further opening of the box cover and also to brace the sections 2 and 3,.so that they will form a serviceable handle for the box.

The box mayy be of any desired construc- .tion but I have illustrated herein a particu- Va support for the folding sections of the cover and prevent the same from bending or folding inwardly when the contents of the box is insufficient to support the cover.

To this end, the back 7, of the box, is placed with the lower edge thereof, against the edge of the bottom 8, and the front 9, is

This permits the back 7, and front 9, to be of the same width and at the same time allows the front 9, to extend above the bottom 8, a greater distance than the back 7, to provide a lip above the box to engage the free edge of the box cover.

The end walls 10, are placed, so that the lower edges bear against the upper surface of the bottom 8, and one end of each end wall, abuts against the end of the back 7, and the other end of Veach end wall overlaps the end of the front 9. The dimensions ofv the complete cover 2-3, are the same as the dimensions of the bottom 8, and said cover is secured to the back 7 so that the edge of the section 2, overlaps the upper edge of the back 7, and the free edge of the section 3,

y abuts against the upper extended edge of the front 9. Thus the ends of the sections 2 and 3, of the cover rest upon the upper edges of the ends 10, andare thereby prevented from collapsing or folding inwardly, and a tack or small nail 11, may be passed through the upper extended edge of the front 9, into the free edge of the section 3, as shown in Fig. 2,

`to lock the cover in the closed position.

In Figs. 7, 8 and 9, I have shown a conused for cigars in which the front and back `12 and 13, respectively are both placed upon the upper surface of the bottom 14, and extend an Aequal distance above the bottom. The ends 15, of the box are likewise placed upon the upper surface of the bottom 14, and are of a width greater than the width of the front and back 13, respectively so that the cover of the box when closed fits between the upper edges of the ends 15.

It will be noted that by reason of the ends of the cover sections 2 and 3 fitting within the ends 15 of the box there is no support for Vsuch Vcover ends and the cover rests upon the upper edges of the front and back 12 and 13, respectively. The cover may be fastened in the closed position by passing the tack or nail 1G, .downwardly through the edge 0f the section 3, into the upper edge of the front 12, as shown in Fig. 7.

This construction may be satisfactorily used in some cases, as for instance, in boxes that are to contain cigars wherein the box is filled and the contents of the box serve to support the cover and prevent folding or collapsing of the cover, which might occur if there was no means to support the adjoining hinged portions of the sections 2 and 3.

It is to be understood, of course, that by reason of the section 2, overlapping the upper edge of the back 13, andthe hinge member 5, being secured to the outer face of the box and cover, the upper edge of the back 13, will serve as a support bearing against y the under side of thev section 2, to prevent collapse of the cover. The upper edge of the back 13, however, is usually quite narrow, and insuliicient to support the vclosed cover from collapse, and in most cases, it is desirable, unless the contents of the box serve to support the cover, that other means, for example, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, be employedto provide a support for the cover when closed.

The operation is as follows:

When the box is to be placed with the 'contents thereof on display, the cover is opened to the position shown in Fig. 5, and the section 3, foldedV downwardly so that the free edge thereof bears against the outer face of the backof the box and a tack or small nail 6, is then driven through the free edge of the section 3, into the back of the f box, so as to'hold the cover in the open position and brace thefolded sections 2 and 3 so that they may be used as a handle to lift or move the box. This folding of the cover,

not only serves to provide a handle for the box, but reduces the amount of projection of the top of the box, so that when a number of boxes are placed close together as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the cover of the front box does not extend a very great distance above the surface of the following box and therefore permits a better view of the contents of the following box than is possible if the cover is not folded or collapsed. Y

I have shown my invention in certain forms for the purpose ofillustration, but I am aware that manyv changes and modifications may be made 'without departing from the principles of my invention. I therefore do not desire to limit this application for patent otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.

I claim as my invention:

A boX comprising a bottom, a pair of parallel side walls of equal width secured to the bottom to extend unequally there above, a pair of parallel end walls of less Width than said side walls, said end walls secured to said bottom and to said side walls with the upper edges of said end walls disposed flush with the upper edges of one side wall and below the upper edges of the other side wall, a cover section, a hinge secured thereto and to one of said side walls, a Second cover section, a second hinge secured thereto and to said rst cover section, said' cover sections adapted to be folded on each 15 other, and means for holding said sections when folded in an upwardly inclined position to clearly display from the front of the box the inner surface of said first cover section.
