HARRY C. KESSLER, OF WAR-RINGTON, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO BREUKER & KESSLER COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A. CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed August 24, 1921.
T aZZ whom it may] concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY C. Knssnnn, a
citizen of the United States, residing at YVarrington, county of Bucks, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved paper box that may be made out of a single blank that can be readily folded into box form and interlocked to form a box closed on all sides and which will remain closed after being filled and during transportation, but the rear of which is readily openable and can be retained in an open position during display of the box while its contents are on sale.
In the drawings, which illustrate a preferred embodiment of my invention:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the blank.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the method of folding the blank to form a box.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View of the box arranged for display.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the box adapted for transportation.
The box blank comprises the following sections: front at having a flap 6, sides 0 and (Z, lower rear wall 6, upper rear wall 7, top flaps g and it hinged to upper edges of sides 0 and (Z, top 2' hinged to the upper edge of front (a and having a flap is adapted to form a closure for the rear of the box, bottom flaps 'm and a hinged to the lower edges of sides 0 and (Z, bottom 0 hinged to the lower edge of lower rear wall 6 and having a rear flap 3?. The hinged joints between the sections as above described are formed by first creasing the blank on the lines of fold in the known manner.
In forming a box from the blank the sides 0 and d are bent at right angles to the front a and the rear'strips e and f, and the flap b secured to the inside of the side 0. Bottom flaps m and n are then bent up at right angles PAPER Box.

to the sides 0 and d, the bottom 0 bent up outside the flaps m and n and the flap p bent up and inserted between the front edges of flaps m and n and the rear face of the front a. Top flaps g and it are then bent down at right angles to the sides 0 and cl, the top 2' bent down over the flaps g and it and the flap is bent down and inserted between the rear edges of flaps g and it and the upper rear section 7 01" the rear Wall.
It Will be observed that between the lower and upper sections 0 and f of the rear wall isa substantial space. The flap 7c is of a widthv suflicient to close this space, and slightly overlap section e, as shown in Fig. 4. When goods are packed in the box, the flap 7r acts as a retainer to hold them from accidental ejection. However, when the goods are in the hands of the retailer for sale, the closed front of the box, as well as the top 2', may be used for display advertisements of the contents, while access to the contents may be had through the open rear of the box, as shown in Fig. 3.
It will be understood that the box may be reversed and the flap /e be secured to the bottom. It will also be understood that any one of the four sides of the box may be orificed as described.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent is- A. foldable box having front, end and rear walls secured to each other, the rear wall having an opening therethrough so located and of such dimensions as to display the goods placed therein, and a top formed of three flaps, two of which extend from the end walls while the third extends from the front wall and is arranged to overlie the other top forming flaps, the latter flap having a flap at its free end which forms a closure for the opening in the back of the box.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set my hand, at Philadelphia, Pa, on this 22nd day of August, 1921.
HARRY C. KESSLER.
