MARVIN E. CHAPIN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSXGNOR TO CHICAGO CARTON COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION.
SHIPPING AND DISPENCING BOX.
To (all whom- 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, MARVIN 'E. Crmrrn', a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Shipping and Dispensing Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to paper-board boxes or cartons and seeks to provide an improved shipping carton which is preferably of the folding. type and which is provided with means for enclosing the contained. goods and also with means for pro-viding a projecting open-mouthed hopper which communicates with the interior of the box and-by which the contents can be CODVQnlBIltlY dispensed. The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred form in the accompanying draw :ing, and more particularlypointed out in the appendedclaims. In the drawing, Figure 1 shows the blank from which the improved shipping and dis pensing carton is made; Fig. 2 is a perspec tive View of the improved box or carton in shipping condition, i. e., with the parts folded to enclose the contained goods. Fig. 3 is a perspective view with portions of the box orcarton extended andinterloclred to form an open-mouthed dispensing hopper. I
The improved box or carton is preferably formed of a single paper-board blankf It comprises a pair of opposite walls a and a pair of opposite walls 7), which, for convenience, are termed side and endwalls, respectively. These side and end walls are hinged together at theiredges along the scores 1, and side wall a at one end of the blank is provided with an extension or tab a hinged thereto along one of thescores 1. When the blank is folded intermediate its ends, the tab 0 is secured by staples 2 or; otherwise to the free edge of the end wall 6 at the opposite end of the blank to form a tubular box body, which can be shipped in collapsed form.
The bottom of the box is preferably formed of two pairs of folding flaps a and Z2 which are hinged to the lower edge of the side and end walls along horizontal scores 3. When the box is set up, the flaps 6'' are first folded inwardly and the flaps a are then folded against the inner flaps b; The flaps a" are of such size that their edges overlap Specificationof Letters Patent.

or meet when the box isset up, and are adapted to be secured together, for example,
by means of a gunnned paper strip.
The top of the box or carton consists of closure-forming; flaps hinged to the upper edges of the side and end walls along horirontal scores 4;. The side or outer pair of top flapsa and a are hinged to the opposite side walls a,'and, preferably, as shown, the edges at the ends of these flaps are slightly inclined and the flap a is somewhat wider than the other flap a They are, however, of such size that they are adapted to meet and preferably overlap, as shown in Fig. 2, when the box is set up.
The end or inner closure-forming flaps at the top of the box are hinged to the upper edges of the end walls Z), and each end wall is provided. with two adjacent flaps 7/ and L The dimensions of these flaps are preferably such that, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the'side or outer flap a will just cover and will substantially coincide with the two inner end flaps b". The end flaps b are provided with inclined scores 5 extending upwardly from the hinged edges thereof and from the portions of these flaps adjacent the side or outer flap a. The end flaps b are also provided with inclined ends and their side edges are provided with notches 6 so as to form tongues. 7.- These tongues are adapted .to interlock with the outer or side flap a and for this purpose the latter is pro vided with slits 8 extending inwardly from the free edge thereof.
As stated, the box can be shipped in flat, knockrdown condition. hen set up. the outer and inner bottom flaps a and 7) are folded inwardly to form the box bottom and the outer flaps connectedtogether by means of a gumme'd paper strip or otherwise. The box isthen filled with the goods, and the top closed by first folding the inner end flaps b and b inwardly, and then inwardly folding first the outer flap (0 and then the outer flap (4 In its folded condition, the outer flap a preferably substantially coincides, as stated, with the inner flaps b Preferably, these parts are secured in position by means of gummed paper strips 9 engaging the upper edges ofthe end walls of the box and the adjacent portions of the flaps a and Z To completely close the box, the sideflaps a is folded over the end flaps Z9 and is suitably secured in position. In the form shown, the
m l ale 448 free edge of the flap a? overlaps the free edge of, the opposite flap a? and is secured thereto by a short strip 10 of gummed paper.
When the goods are received by the dealer, he can remove the gummed paper strip 10 so as to release the flap a and the end flaps 6 Then, by extending the flaps Z2 and folding the end portions thereof upon the scores 5, the tongues 7 of the flaps b can be readily interlocked with the slits 8 of the side flap (4 to thereby hold the flap e in a partially open inclined position and form a projecting dispensing hopper. By supporting the box on one of its side faces with the hopper extending along the lower front portion of the box, as shown in Fig. 3, the contained goods can be dispensed. In this position, the hopper communicates with the interior of the box and has a horizontal open mouth through which the contents can be readily reached. If desired, the flap a? may bear advertising matter which will be displayed above the mouth of the dispensing hopper.
The improved box is simple and inexpensive in construction and is conveniently adapted for shipping and dispensingarticles such as cakes of soap or the like. It should also be noted that the dispensing hopper is formed without cutting away or otherwise weakening the tubular box body formed by the side and end walls, these walls being unbroken and connected at their side edges from the upper to the lower end of the box. Obviously, changes may be made in the de tails set forth without departure from the essentials of the invention as defined by the claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A paper box comprising connected side and end walls, a pair of side flaps and a pair of separate cnd flaps permanently hinged respectively to the edges of said side and end walls and adaptedto be folded into position at right angles to said walls, one of said side flaps and said separate end flaps being adapted to be connected at their edges by bendable tongues to hold the end flaps in extended position and the side flap connected thereto in inclined position and form an open-mo1ithed dispensing hopper, substantially as described.
2. A. folding paper box comprising connected side and end walls and a side flap and a pair of end flaps permanently hinged respectively to said walls, said end flaps having inclined scores and tongues hinged there to along said scores and adapted to inter lock with said side flap to hold the same in inclined position and form a projecting dispensing hopper, substantially as described.
3. A folding paper box comprising connected side and end walls, and a side flap and a pair of separate end flaps permanently hinged respectively to said walls and adapted to fold inwardly, when'the box is closed, substantially at right angles to said walls, said flaps having means whereby their edges may be connected to hold the end flapsextended and the side flap in inclined position and thereby form a projecting dispensing hopper, substantially as described.
i. A. paper box comprising side and end walls and a pair of side and two pairs of end flaps hinged respectively to said side and end walls and adapted to be folded to form a closure, one of the pairs of end flaps being arranged to support one of said outer flaps in inclined position to form a projecting, open-mouthed dispensing hopper, substantially as described. 1
5. A folding paper box'comprising connected side and end walls and a pair of side flaps and two pairs of end flaps hinged respectively to said side and end walls and adapted to be folded to form a closure one of the pairs of end flaps having inclined scores and tongues adapted to interlock with one of said outer flaps to hold the same in inclined position and form a projecting dispensing hopper, substantially as described.
6. A foldingpaper box comprising side a projecting dispensing hopper, substantially as described.
