This invention relates to a new and-- improved 'display box, and more particularly to the type of box in which the box portion,
serving as a cover when the box is closed, serves as a support when the box is open. Boxes of thistype have heretofore been made in which the portion serving, as both cover and sup ort is provided with downvwardly extending flanges on the end and a portion only of the side; It is impossible to extend these flanges along the full length of the side since this would prevent the member from being folded under to serve asa display support: Whenthe member is used as acover therefor it only ehcloses a portion of the side edges and the unenclosed portions tend to spring outwardly and provide openings between the side and cover. Also the box has little'rigidity and does not properly rotect its' contents. WVith some 0x ofthis character the combination cover and support member is integrally connected to the box bottom" -andextends upwardly insidet'the box end. With this type of box, as usually constructed,"
\ there is no box element which serves to maintain the over-hanging cover end flange in contact with the adjacent box end. This feature also renders the box somewhat unstable.
It is an 7 to provide a new and improved display box or carton, having a {cover member adapted to serve as a support when the box is in the display position. I
It is an additional object to provide a box of this character in which-members are pro vided fully closing the corner between the box sides and box top throughout the length integrally connected to the box, the box law-'- irig means to maintain this an adjacent bo'x end. I
Other and further objects will appearas the description proceeds.
I have illustrated a preferred embodiment portion 1 against nected to the to object of the present invention of my invention in the a ccomp anying drawings, in-which y Figure lis a perspective view of the box in the display position; i
Figure 2 is a perspectiveview of in closedposition; and
Figure 3' is a view of theflat box blank.
The boxcomprises the bottom 11 and the sides 12 and 13, which are integrallyv connected to the box on the lines 14 and.15. I
the box The tabs 16 and 17 are integrally connected I to the ends of the side member 13, and the similar tabs 18 and 19 are connected to the s de member 12,- The display flap 20 is connected to the bottom alon the-line 21, and
is providedwith scored ine 22. The top member 23 is connected to the bottom along line 24 and is provided with the scored lines 25 and 26. intermediate portion is formed between the scored lines 24 and 25,
which portion integrally connects the top and bottom. The top member is provided with the end portion 27, which latter is conalong line 2.8 and is scored 1 he tabs 31 and 32 are con nected to the opposite sides of the top porat 29 and 30.
tion along lines 33 and34, andare provided with angular edges 35 and '36. The'tabs 31- and 32 are provided with the extension flaps 37 and 38 respectively. .The tabs 18 and'19 are provided with cuts 39 and 40 re-- spectively, and the tabs 16 and 17 areprovided with the locking- portions 41 and 42 respectively. p
In folding the box for use the ' side members 12 and 13" are folded upwardly along lines 14'and 15. The display portion 20 is bent upwardly along line 21. and the tabs 16 and 18 are swung inwardly to form the end of the box,' the member 41 being inserted in thecut .39.. The cover member23 is swung upwardly about line 24 and the tabs 17 and 19 are swung inwardly and the notch 42 inserted in cut 40 to form the other end of the box. The flanges 43 and .44 are folded down so as to extend horizontally inward. The extension; 27 is folded in;
wardl on line 28 and the tabs 31 and 32 are f0 ded on lines 33 and 34, the extensions -37 and 38 bein placed inside of the folded portion 27. T e
rti'on 27 -is then folded top is down and also stiffen the box longiextensions 37 and 38, and the end edge of the portion 27 is folded on line 30 sufliciently to slip under the struck-up tabs 45 and 46.
After the box is filled with the desired commodit the display portion is folded down on ine 22, resting on the material in the box and on the flanges 43 and 44. The top is then folded down on line and serves to close the box. The portion 27 extends beyond the opposite end of the box and the portions 31 and 32 extend beside the sides of the box, as shown in Figure 2.
The corners between the sides and top of the box are fully closed by the flanges 43 and 44 which have been indicated in broken lines in Figure 2. The ends of these flanges also fit against the cover member at line 25 Where it is bent down over'the box. They ing portion of the topragainst the end of the box formed by the tabs Hand 19. Similar ly, the other ends of the flanges 43 and 44 engage against the display member 20 on the line 21, and when the box is in the display position, as in Figure 1, they maintain the member 20 against the end ofthe box formed by the tabs 16 and 18. v
To open the box for display the cover is lifted and swung about line 25 until the .portion between the line 25 and the line 26 is in engagement with the front of the box.
' t, The cover is then swung further about the line 26 to bring it to the posit-ion shownin Figure 1, in which the angular edge 35 of the member 31, and the similar edge 36 of the member 32, rest on the box support. Similarly, the edge 29 of the top end portion 27 serves as a support. This supporting portion is quite rigid, due to the double portion extending across the end which is, also -stiflened-by the inturned tabs 37 and 38..
The flanges 43 and 44 are highly important in rendering the box satisfactory, both for display and, for packing purposes. These flanges fully close'the box when the jacent end of the box. When the box is open the also have the important function of maintaining the display portion in the proper position, even after a large portion of the contents of-the box are removed.
