This invention relates to improvements in a carton or box and particularly to a knocked.- down carton of what is known as a break-back lid type.
Break-back lid cartons or boxes are known in the trade. In this type of carton the cover or lid is employed not only as such but also as an easel for displaying the merchandise within the carton. As heretofore used the carton was formed of at least two blanks such as disclosed in copending application of the present inventor, Serial Number 639,767, "while by the present invention such a carton is formed from a single blank to obtain thesame result.
It is, therefore, the principal object of the present inventon to provide a carton or box of the break-back lid type formed of a single blank and shipped to the user in a knocked-down condition.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a carton formed of a single blank and including an integral hingedly connected lid which is partly assembled prior to shipment to the user and in which the user in setting up the carton separates the blank into separate assemblies for completing the carton.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a carton made from a single blank shipped to the user in a knocked-down condition and wherein the user sets up a four side carton each of which is provided with hollow walls together with an integral hingedly con nected lid provided with depending carton embracing flanges.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a blank whereby any size of carton may be provided and which has an integral lid or cover that may include means whereby any size of area of carton bottom and covering lid may be provided.
A still further object of this invention is the provision of a carton of the break-back lid type formed of a single blank whereby all printing can be done on one side of the blank to be exposed on the set up carton when used for shipping purposes as well as display purposes.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and it is to be understood that any modifications may be made in the exact structural details there shown and described, Within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from or exceeding the spirit; of the invention.

Throughout the several view of the drawings similar reference characters are employed to denote the same or. similar parts.
As was noted above this invention relates to improvements in what are commercially known as breakback lid type of cartons. This type of carton is. used .for shipping merchandise whether said merchandise consists of a single member or article or a. plurality of similar articles. The merchandiser or retailer utilizes the car-ton in which the goods were shipped to him as a display mechanism for said goods. As a shipping container or carton it is, closed as illustrated most clearlyin Fig. 1, that is,with the lid or, cover in 3 its normal closing position. Upon receipt of the package the retailer opens the lid in the normal manner and continues to backwardly actuate the same until the said lid underlies the carton bottom whereupon the carton is adapted for display purposes on a counter, within a case or the like as illustrated clearly in Fig. 2. The carton forms an ideal display and dispensing carton from which individual articles, such as flashlight batteries, golf balls, and similar goods may be sold by the carton or individually from the carton.
As was further noted above this type of shipping and display carton has been heretofore known and employed but such a carton has presented some difficulty in set up and erection. By the present application a shipping and display carton having all of the advantages of the heretofore known cartons is provided but is formed or erected from a single "blank thereby simplifying assembling and erection of the final carton. The actual details of the blank may be considerably varied in so far as the reinforcement of the carton walls, the formation of the cover or lid flanges, and the area of the carton bottom and depth of side walls are concerned but in each case a single initial blank is employed and shipped to the packer or user. In the drawings attached to this specification several modifications in the aforementioned details are illustrated and they Will be described in succession and the differences pointed out as respects the simplified blank.
Accordingly and referring to Figs. 3 to 6 inclusive use is made of a blank having considerable length by comparison to its width and gen- 1 erally rectangular in area. This blank comprises a panel I constitutingthe bottom of the carton proper and has its sides or ends defined by score or fold lines I6, I'I, I8 and I9. Each of said score or fold lines I6 to hingedly connect to the bottom panel I5 an extension from which the walls of the carton is formed with one of said extensions including a display panel and another of said extensions including a cover or lid and which extensions L? will be described in detail.
Extending from the blank bottom panel I5 and connected thereto by the hinge or fold line I6 is extension subdivided by score or fold lines 2|, 22, 23, 24 and 25 into panels 26, 21, 28, 29, 3a and 3I. In the erected carton the panel 26 constitutes the front wall outer wall member and has its lateral ends defined by score or fold lines 32 and 33 which are in alignment with the score or fold lines I! and I9. The panels 21 and 28, in the erected carton, together constitute or form a display panel located above the carton and adapted to carry advertising matter or the like and said panels have their lateral ends defined by cut lines in alignment with the score or fold lines 32 and 33. The panel 29 in the erected carton constitutes the front wall topwall member whose ends are likewise defined by out lines in alignment with the ends of panels 21 and 28. The panel 39 in the erected carton constituted the front wall inner wall member which has its lower end hingedly connected to the carton bottom panel I5 through the panel 3| which acts as a glue flap for said front wall and whereby it will be noted the said front wall inner and outer wall members are articulated to the bottom panel. The said front wall inner wall member panel has its ends defined by score or fold lines 34 and 35 whereby tucking flaps 36 and 3'! are hingedly connected. Each of said tucking I9 inclusively 4 I and 43 form What may conveniently be termed as the side walls thereof.
The extension 43 is subdivided by score or fold lines 44, 45 and 45 to form between the blank bottom panel score, I9 for example, and the end of the extension panels 41, 48, 49 and 59. In the erected carton the panel 41 forms the side wall outer wall member having its ends defined by score or fold lines 5| and 52 which are respectively in alignment with the score or fold lines I6 and I8. The panel 49, in the erected carton, forms the side wall inner wall member and has its ends, in the main, defined by score or fold lines 53 and 54 which are inwardly spaced with respect to the outer wall member end scores 5I and 52.
This inward spacing is substantially equal to the width of the front wall top wall panel or member 29 as well as a similar member or wall of the back wall as will later be made clear. The panel 48, in the erected carton, forms the side wall top Wall member and has its portions adjacent to inner and outer wall members connected thereto and has its ends contoured as illustrated at 55 and 59 to serve a dual purpose. The contouring 55 and 59 of the top wall member ends is necessary due to the difierence in lengths of said members and at the same time adds a decorative feature of the ends of said top wall member where it overlies the front and back wall top wall members. The side wall inner wall member 49 through its score or fold lines 53 and 54 has hingedly connected thereto spacer flaps 51 and 58 which in the erected carton separates the side wall inner and outer members from one another. In addition the ends of the inner wall member panel as carry projecting locking lugs 59 and 69 to engage, by entering, locking slits 6| and 62 in the front wall inner wall member and similar construction in the back wall inner wall member as will later be made clear. The remaining panel 59 of the extension 43 overlies the bottom panel I5 and acts as a spacer flap for the lower ends of the side walls inner and outer wall members.
The remaining blank bottom panel I5 score line I8 hingedly connects an extension 63 which in the erected carton forms the hollow back wall and the cover or lid. The said extension, is, therefore, subdivided by a plurality of score or fold lines 34, 65, 55, 31, 68, 69, T9 and II with a parallel line of perforations I2 between the score or fold lines 68 and 69 to provide in said extension panels 13, l4, 15, I6, 'I'I, I8, I9, 89, BI and 82. As will later be made clear the panel '53 in the erected carton forms the back wall outer wall member while the panel 8| forms this back wall inner wall member. The said panel SI has its ends defined by score lines I49 and MI for hinging thereto tucking flaps I42 and I43 and which tucking flaps have, respectively, hingedly connected thereto through score or fold lines I44 and I45, spacer flaps I46 and M1. The panel 89 forms the back wall top wall member between the upper ends of the said inner and outer wall members. The panel I9 is utilized as a glue fiap or attaching panel for securing said top wall member in position by being secured in face contact with the panel 14 and which latter panel 14 constitutes a portion of the lid orcover when in closing position. The panel 82 in the erected carton constitutes a glue flap for securing the lower end of the inner wall member to the carton bottom l5. From the foregoing it will now be appreciated that the backwall has its inner and outer wall members articulated to one another and the carton bottom [5.
As was noted above the panel 74 constitutes a part of the lid or cover which lid or cover is completed with panels 15 and 16. Panel 16, as will later be made clear, constitutes a make up panel depending upon the size of the carton desired and in certain instances may be entirely Y dispensed with. The remaining panels Fl] and 78 of the extension 63 form a depending flange from the cover or lid and in the closed position embrace the front wall outer wall member. The lateral dimension or ends of the panels in the extension 63 are in the main formed by out lines with the following few exceptions. The lateral dimension or ends of the back wall outer wall member panel 13 is defined by score or fold lines 83 and 84. The ends or lateral dimension of cover panels 15 and 16 are defined by score or fold. lines 85 and 86 which hingedly connect thereto flaps 81 and 38 similarly formed as right angles which form the easel support for the carton when on display. It should be noted that the score or fold line [it extends through these easel flaps 8! and 28. Respectively hingedly connected to the flaps 8'! and 88 through score or fold lines 89 and 98 are tucking flaps 9| and 92. The tucking flaps 9i and 92 are each pro-. vided within their borders with elongated apertures 93 and 94. Inwardly of the perforation 12 the flap or panel 78 i provided with cut outs 95 having the general contour of a Y thereby providing between them and the ends of said panel 78 a plurality of tongues 96 each having its lower opposite corners removed and therefore of a reduced dimension at its free end.
The adjacent ends of each of the outer wall members are connected to one another through their score or fold lines and a corner piece .9"! each of which is provided with a diagonal score or fold line 98 whereby said corner pieces are folded on themselves upon erection of the cars ton. This type of corner piece is referred to in the trade as a bellows corner and is in effect a tucking flap to be tucked within the side walls between the inner and outer wall members thereof.
After the blank has been cut and scored as just described adhesive or glue 9!! ,is applied to the glue flap 3|, adhesive Hill is applied to the display panel portion 28 and similar adhesive tfii and I02 is applied to the panels '59 and 82.
The blank is now folded to its knock-down position for shipment to the user. This folding is effected in the extension 20 by folding that portion thereof beyond score line 22 thereby bringing panel 28 into superimposed relation with panel 21 and glue flap 3| into superimposed relation with the bottom panel l5. Substantially, simultaneously the portion of extension 63 beyond the score or fold line 66 is folded to bringpanel 19 into superimposed relation with pa e 14 and the g ue fl p 2 into u e m osed relation with bottom panel I5. Pressure is now applied to the blank to sheet proper adhesion between the parts having adhesive and between them. The blank is now in the position illus- 6; t a d n Fi and re d for h pm n to he user.

The user upon desiring to erect the carton will f rst tend to break back the blank of Fig. i on the superimposed score line 65 and line of perforation 12. This breaking back or rearward folding need not be sufficient to break the score 65; this rearward bend will, however, be sufficient to cause a separation or severance of the blank at the line of perforations 12 thereby causing a parting of the blank along this line, This is readily accomplished due to the fact that the portion of the blank or the panel 19 of the extension 63 is adhesively held against shifting while the portion of the blank or panels .18, I1, 16 are free to move relative to their superimposed portions of the extension. This effects, as noted above, a severance of the blank along the line of perforations and the user then outwardly folds the panels '18, 17, and 76 to the position iH'llS-r trated in Fig. 5 whereupon the carton may be erected.
The erection of the carton form the blank now in the position illustrated in Fig. 5 is clearly dis.- cloSBd in Fig. 6 and this erection is substantially as follows:
The front and rear walls are elevated from their flat position to an upstanding position to be normal to the bottom panel. This shifting of the front and back walls automatically separates the front and back wall members from one another causing them to stand vertical to the carton bottom in spaced apart relation. One of the side walls extension is then raised from its extended position which automatically causes the bellows corner pieces 9'! to be properly folded and disposed transversely of the carton bottom. Theremaining panels of the side wall extension are then successively folded to be normal to one another having first disposed the vertical spacing panels 5'! and 58 normal to their carrying panel or side wall inner wall member. The said panels upon being positioned to their final position are similar to that illustrated in Fig. 6 and are held in this position by causing the side wall inner wall meme bers locking lugs 59 and 60 to enter the locking slits BI and 62 of the front wall inner wall memher and locking slits I03 and IE4 of 21 back wall inner wall member.
The remaining Wall is now assembled in the same manner as the side wall just described.
.In order to provide the flanges of the lid to embrace the carton front and side walls the side flanges 81 and 88 are raised to be normal to the carton cover panel 15 whereupon the tucking flaps 9| and 92 are disposed transversely of the cover. The panels TI and 18 are now foldedto enclose between them the tucking flaps 9| and 9 2 whereupon the tongues 96 are inserted in the tucking flaps apertures 93 and 94 to lock the flaps in their erected positions. The carton is .now ready to receive merchandise or goods which when disposed within the carton may have folded thereonto the display panel 21-28 whereupon the lid or cover i closed over the carton and its mar-.- chandise. It.is in this position thatthe carton isshipped to the retailer or merchant.
Upon receipt of the carton with its merchandise in the condition of Fig. ,1 the retailer upon de sin'ns to dis lay the oods therein op n theslid in the normal manner actuating it about the score or fold line 64. Continued backward movement of the lid on the score or fold line 65 brings the panel I4 with its superimposed panel 59 into contact with the outer surface of the back wall outer wall member I3 whereupon the said cover panel may be broken on the score or fold line 65 to bring the panels I and it into engagement with the under surface of the carton bottom I5. The cover and carton are now in the position illustrated in Fig. 2 whereupon the carton attractively displays the merchandise therein.
It Will readily be appreciated that the capacity or cubical content of the carton will be determined by the merchandise or goods to be packed and shipped therein. lhis will determine the area of the bottom I5 and the height of the side walls as determined by panels 26, 4! and i3 and their associated elements. Itfi's the dimensions of these parts that determines the size of the make up panel '55 in the cover or lid. In order to arrive at the proper dimension for the make up panel I6 it must be appreciated that panels I4, I5 and. 56, if the latter is needed, must equal the carton bottom panel I5 and that the panel I3 must be equal to the panel II. Therefore if panels I5 and I5 do not equal panel I5 then panel I6 must be supplied to make up this difference and the folding of the blank takes place on the score or fold line 66 while if panels I4 and I5 are equal to the panel I5 then the panel-IE is unnecessary and the blank folded on the score or fold line 6! as will be evident from the modified blanks of Figs. '7 and and later described.
The modified blank of Fig. 7 in addition to having eliminated therefrom the cover make up panel 16 also is illustrated as without the advertising display panel formed by blank panels 2I and 28. In other words the front wall extension has eliminated therefrom score or fold lines 22 and 23 and panels 21 and 28 wherefore the score or fold line 2I hingedly connects to the front wall outer wall member the top wall member panel 29.
The blank of Fig. 7 is further modified in so far as the construction of the lid or cover front and easel flanges are concerned. This construc: tion is considered to be a novel one in the present application while the construction illustrated in Fig. 3 is old and well known being known in the trade as a hardware lock.
Specifically the lid or cover easel and front flanges are as follows: The flaps 8i and 88 respec tively have their outer inclined edge defined by a score 01 fold line I85 and IE6 through which are attached substantially identical intermediate wedge shaped flaps I8? and I538. The said flaps Ill! and I88 respectively have hingedly connected thereto through score or fold lines H19 and III] tucking flaps I II and H2. The intermediate flaps I07! and I88 in addition carry at their outer ends, respectively, through score or fold lines I I2 and I I3 tucking flaps I I4 and I I5. Adjacent each of the tucking flaps H4 and H5 the intermediate flange flaps IOI and I88 have formed therein locking apertures IIS and I H.
The cover front flange inner flange member formed by the panel I8 is devoid in its outer end of Y-shaped apertures 95 and instead has connected to it through a score or fold line H8 an auxiliary panel II9 which in the erected cover acts as a creeper. The panel I I9 is connected to the panel 19 through the line of perforations I2 for the same purpose a above described. Projecting from the cover front flange panel I8 into the creeper panel II9 are. tongues .I20 and IZI while the said creeper panel H9 has projecting from its lateral ends locking tongues I22 and I23.
After the blank of Fig. '7 is cut and scored as just described and illustrated in Fig. 7 adhesive 99, IIlI and I32 is applied to the appropriate panels and extensions 20 and 63 folded to the position illustrated in the lower half of Fig. 8 and in which condition the blank is shipped to the user. The user prior to setting up the carton folds the same backward on the superimposed score or fold line 65 and line of perforations I2 thereby effecting a severance or separation of the blank along the line of perforations I2 and an outward folding of the cover front flange panels I'I, I8 and H9. I
The cover flanges are et up in the following manner after the erection of the carton proper. Intermediate side or easel panels I01 and I08 together with their attached locking panels III or II 2 are folded respectively on the score or fold lines I05 and let whereupon the said inter mediate panels It! and I08 are respectively in face contact with easel flanges 81 and 88 with the locking flanges III and H2 superimposed on the main cover panel I5. The tucking tabs H4 and H5 are then folded to be normal to their respective intermediate panel I0? and IE8. At this time the core or fold lines we and III] are in vertical alignment with the score or 10101 lines 85 and 86 whereupon the easel flanges 81 and 88 are raised to be normal to the cover main panel I5. This now disposes the tucking flaps I I4 and I I5 transversely of the cover main panel I5. The front flange panels are now raised to be normal to the cover main panel 75 and which automatically folds on themselves bellows corner piece Ilda and IISa respectively at the opposite ends of the front flange panel 11. The parts are now in the position illustrated in the upper left hand corner of Fig. 9. At this time the creeper panel H9 is folded in a counter-clockwise direc tion about the score or fold line I It to be normal to the said front flange inner member 18. The front flange inner member panel I8 is now actuated in a clockwise direction about the score or fold line 11 thereby bringing it into contact with the tucking flaps I M and I I5 and enfolding said flaps as well as bellows corner pieces IISa and I Isa between itself and the front flange outer member panel TI. It will be appreciated that the above described folding of the creeper panel II9 left the locking tabs I28 and I2I projectingin the direction of the plane of the panel I8 wherefore they are now downwardly projecting and will engage behind the locking flanges III and H2. At the same time the locking tabs 22 and I23 from the ends of the creeper I I9 will be upstand ing normal to said creeper and will engage in the locking openings I it and III formed in the side flanges intermediate panels I01 and I08, action which is obvious from the illustration of Fig. 9. At this time the cover flanges are in their erected or set up position illustrated in the left hand side of Fig. 9. 7
By this construction a more substantial and 'positive lock is provided for the cover flanges over that illustrated and described above in connection with Figs. 3 to 6 inclusive. It should be noted however that the cover flange construction of Fig. '7 may be substituted for that of Fig. 3 or the construction of Fig. 3 substituted for that of Fig. 7.
The modification illustrated in Figs. 10 to 12 inclusive is primarily concerned with the articulation of the wall members on themselves with one of said wall members articulated to the bottom panel instead of having each of the said inner and outer wall members articulated to the bottom and which construction is illustrated in applicants copending application Serial Number 611,566, now Patent No. 2,493,189. This modification, over that of Figs. 3 and 7, consists in the panel 3| being changed from a glue flap to a bottom wall member and the connection to said bottom wall member through a score or fold line I24 of a glue flap or panel I25 illustrated as of a width substantially equal to the height of the outer wall member. In addition the blanks of Figs. 3 and 7 is modified by changing the glue flap 82 to a bottom Wall member and connecting thereto through a score or fold line I26 a glue flap I2I again illustrated as of a width substantially equal to the height of the back wall outer wall member panel.
H The blank of Fig. 1.0 is further modified over that of Figs. 3 and '7 whereby to provide the front and back walls with reinforced tucking flaps each of a substantial rectangular cross section instead of but a single upstanding thickness as illustrated at 35 and 3! in Fig. 3. Accordingly, front wall top wall panel 29, outer wall member panel 3|], bottom wall panel 3| and glue flap I25 each have projecting from its opposite ends an extension I28, I29, I38 and I3I connected therewith through score or fold line I32. To permit of disposing this rectangular tucking flap transversely of the carton bottom panel the bottom and top walls extensions I 28 and I30 are provided at their inner ends with an aperture I33 of a length and width equal to the width of the said bottom and top wall members.
Asubstantially identical construction is provided at the ends of the back wall top wall mem ber panel 80, inner wall member panel 8|, bottom wall member 82, and glue flap I 21 in the form of extensions respectively indicated by reference numerals I34, I35, I36 and I3I respectively articulated to one another as above described with respect to the front wall tucking fiap.
The blank of Fig. 10, after being cut and scored as just described and illustrated in the upper half of Fig. 10, is folded in the same manner as the blanks of Figs. 3 and I, except that an additional fold is first required namely the respective folding of the glue flaps I25 and IZI along with their adjacent front Wall bottom wall member 3| and back Wall bottom wall member 82 are first folded n the score or fold line 25 and II to expose their under surface, in other words to the positions illustrated in the lower half of Fig. 10. The blanks are then folded in the same manner as above described to bring the glue flap I25 into engagement with the front wall outer wall member which at this time has attached thereto adhesive I38 and the glue flap I2! into engagement with the back wall outer wall member which now carries adhesive I39.
It should be noted that in this modified construction the bellows corner pieces 9! between the several outer wall members had adhesive applied to that portion thereof between its diagonal score or fold line 98 and the front wall outer wall member and the back wall outer wall member. By this construction the said portions of the bellows corner pieces 91 are adhesively attached to the outermost panel of the reinforced or rectangular tucking flaps.
It should be noted that the blank of Fig. is illustrated as incorporating the cover or lid construction of the blank of Fig. 7 but the construction of Fig. 5 may be substituted therefor. A with the blanks of Figs. 3 and 7 it is in its folded and glued condition, illustrated in solid lines in Fig. 11, that it is shipped to the user requiring him prior to the erection of the carton to break the blank on its line of perforation as above fully described whereupon the cover flange panels may be extended to the phantom lin illustration of Fig. 11.
The erection of the carton and lid or cover follow the same steps and procedure a above described with respect to the blanks of Figs. 3 and 7 except that after the front and back walls have been properly arranged the movement of rectangular tucking flaps to their operative or transverse position automatically raises the side wall extension to be vertical to the bottom as clearly illustrated in Fig. 12. This is, of course. effected because of the securing of one half of the bellows corner pieces 91 to the said tucking flaps.
It should be noted that all printing is done on the same side of the blank in each of the modifications above described. Specifically referring to the blank illustrated in Fig. 3 the surface thereof exposed in said Fig. 3 is the inner surface and the printin will be done on the under surface of the blank. In other words the outside of the front, back and side wall panels, 28, 41 and I3, are printed to carry any desirable information or advertising as is the upper surface of the top wall members or panels 29, 48 and 80. Likewi e printing or other art and display work may be simultaneously applied to display panels 2! and 28, cover panels I4 and I5 with or without the make up panel I6 as well as the panel 19 which is secured in face engagement with the panel I4. The normally exposed surfaces of the cover easel panels 8! and 88 and the cover front flange panel I! are likewise each printable at the same time.
From the foregoing it will be readily appreciated that each of the surface exposed when the carton is erected as illustrated in Fig. 1 are suitably printed at the same printing operation and at the same time the surfaces exposed when the carton is set up as in Fig. 2 were likewise simultaneously printed; in connection with the carton as set up in Fig. Zit will be appreciated that the exposed surface of bottom panel I5 was not printed since it would be covered by the article being displayed its printing is generally unnecessary. A
From the foregoing it will now be appreciated that there has been provided a carton of the knocked-down type which answers the objects initially set forth.
What is claimed is: V
1. In a carton of the class described formed from a single blank comprising a bottom panel and a cover of substantially the same area as the bottom panel, a back wall outer wall member hingedly connected at opposite ends between the said bottom panel and cover, a front wall comprising inner and outer wall members each hingedly connected to the bottom panel along and adjacent the edge opposite to that to which the cover is connected; a back wall inner Wall member carried by the blank beyond the portion thereof that forms the cover, for attachment to the bottom panel adjacent the back wall outer wallmember, means between said back wall outer wall member and cover whereby the blank may be severed to separate the cover and carton back wall outer wall member, said blank being scortd inwardly of the severing means of the aosasrr 11 blank to provide a panel to depend from the cover for forming a carton cover front flange, side flanges from said cover cooperating with the front flange to embrace the carton proper, and walls from the remaining sides of said bottom panel.
2. In a carton of the class described formed from a single blank comprising a bottom panel and a cover of substantially the same area as the bottom panel, a back wall outer wall member hingedly connected at opposite ends between the said bottom panel and cover, a front wall comprising inner and outer wall members each hingedly connected to the bottom panel along and adjacent the edge opposite to that to which the cover is connected, a back wall inner wall member carried by the blank, beyond the portion thereof that forms the cover, for attachment to the bottom panel adjacent the back wall outer wall member, means between said back wall outer wall member and cover whereby the blank may be severed to separate the cover and carton back wall outer wall member, said blank being scored inwardly of the severing means of the blank to provide a panel to depend from the cover for forming a carton cover front flange, side flanges from said cover cooperating with the front flange to embrace the carton proper, and walls from the remaining sides of said bottom panel, each of said remaining walls comprising inner and outer wall members.
3. In a carton of the class described formed from a single blank comprising a bottom panel and a cover of substantially the same area as the bottom panel, a back wall outer wall member hingedly connected at its opposite ends between the said bottom panel and cover, a front wall comprising inner and outer wall members each hingedly connected to the bottom panel along and adjacent the edge opposite to that to which the cover is connected, a back wall inner wall member carried by the blank, beyond the portion thereof that forms the cover, for attachment to the bottom panel adjacent the back wall outer wall member, means between said back wall outer wall member and cover whereby the blank may be severed to separate the cover and carton back wall outer wall member, said blank being scored inwardly of the severing means of the blank to provide a panel to depend from the cover for forming a carton cover front flange, side flanges from said cover cooperating with the front flange to embrace the carton proper, and walls from the remaining sides of said bottom panel, each of said remaining walls comprising inner and outer wall members and a top wall member separating said inner and outer wall members.
4. In a carton of the class described comprising a carton proper and an integral hingedly connected lid together formed from a single blank, said carton proper comprising a bottom panel with walls upstanding from the sides thereof including a front and a back wall, said cover comprising a plurality of panels including a cover panel proper and said panels together having an area in excess to that of the carton bottom panel, said front and back walls each including an inner and an outer wall member having their inner ends hingedly connected to the secured in position by folding the blank alon a score line therein which defines one end of one of the panels of the cover, means in said blank for severing same at a point between the portion thereof forming the back wall inner wall member and the portion thereof forming the said cover, one of the panels of the cover being formed by a score in the blank inwardly of the severing means thereof to depend from the cover to form a front flange depending from the cover panel proper, and side flanges depending from the remaining portion of the cover panel proper.
5. In a carton of the class described comprising a carton proper and an integral hingedly connected lid together formed from a single blank, said carton proper comprising a bottom panel with walls upstanding from the sides thereof including a front and a back wall, said cover comprising a plurality of panels including a cover panel proper and said panels together having an area in excess to that of the carton bottom panel, said front and back walls each in-= eluding an inner and an outer wall member having their inner ends hingedly connected to the bottom panel with said back wall outer wall member forming the hinge connection of the cover and bottom, the inner wall member of the back wall being formed from a portion of the blank beyond said cover forming panels and secured in position by folding the blank along a score line therein which defines one end of one of the panels of the cover, means in said blank for severing same at a point between the portion thereof forming the back wall inner wall member and the portion thereof forming the said cover, one of the panels of the cover being formed by a score in the blank inwardly of the severing means thereof to depend from the cover to form a front flange depending from the cover panel proper, side flanges depending from the remaining portion of the cover panel, and panels ex tending from the front wall inner and outer wall members to act as a display panel proper.
6. In a carton of the class described compris ing a carton proper and a cover hingedly connected thereto and formed of a single blank which includes a bottom panel for the carton proper, extensions from the sides thereof each subdivided by score lines to form panels foldable normal to one another to provide side walls eaclt having an outer, a top, and an inner wall mem ber, an extension from the front edge of said bottom panel subdivided by score lines to form panels to provide front wall outer, top, inner,
' and bottom wall members together with a flap for attachment to the front wall outer wall member, and an extension from the back edge of the bottom panel of a length to form a back wall outer wall member, a cover panel of an area equal to the area of the bottom panel, a cover front flange, a back wall top wall member, a back wall inner wall member, a back wall bottom wall member and a glue flap whereby said back wall members are articulated to one another, said extension from the bottom panel back edge including means whereby it severable to separate the cover flange from the back wall members, and cooperating means between said side, front and back wall members for holding same in erected positions.

In a carton of the class described comprising a carton proper and a cover hingedly connected thereto and formed of a single blank which includes a bottom panel for the carton p p 2l1$ n imm the sides thereof each 13 subdivided by score lines to form panels foldable normal to one another to provide side walls each having an outer, a top, and an inner wall member, an extension from the front edge of said bottom panel subdivided by score lines to form panels to provide front Wall outer, top, inner, and bottom wall members together with a flap for attachment to the front wall outer wall member, and an extension from the back edge of the bottom panel of a length to form a back wall outer wall member, a cover panel of an area equal to the area of the bottom panel, a cover front flange, a back wall top wall member, a back wall inner wall member, a back wall bottom wall member and a glue flap whereby said back wall members are articulated to one another, said extension from the bottom panel back edge including means whereby it is severable to separate the cover flange from the back wall members, cooperating means between said side, front and back wall members for holding same in erected positions, and flanges from the sides of the cover panel for engaging the side walls of the carton proper.
8. In a carton of the class described comprising a carton proper and a cover hingedly connected thereto and formed of a single blank which includes a bottom panel for the carton proper, extensions from the sides thereof each subdivided by score lines to form panels foldable normal to one another to provide side walls each having an outer, a top, and an inner wall member, an extension from the front edge of said bottom panel subdivided by score lines to form panels to provide front wall outer, top, inner, and bottom wall members together with a flap for attachment to the front Wall outer wall member, and an extension from the back edge of the bottom panel of a length to form a back wall outer wall member, a cover panel of an area equal to the area of the bottom panel, a cover front flange, a back wall top wall member, a back wall inner wall member, a back wall bottom wall member and a glue flap whereby said back wall members are articulated to one another, said extension from the bottom panel back edge including means whereby it is severable to separate the cover flange from the back wall members, cooperating means between said side, front and back wall members for holding same in erected positions, said cover panel including a panel of a height equal to the height of the back wall outer wall member and defined by a score line in said cover panel, flaps extending from the sides of the cover panel subdivided by score lines angularly related to the sides of the cover panel whereby said extensions may be folded to provide cover side flanges having their free edges upwardly inclined to act as an easel for supporting the carton proper in display position.
9. In a carton of the class described comprising a carton proper and a cover hingedly connected thereto and formed of a single blank which includes a bottom panel for the carton proper, extensions from the sides thereof each subdivided by score lines to form panels foldable normal to one another to provide side walls each having an outer, a top, and an inner wall member, an extension from the front edge of said bottom panel subdivided by score lines to form panels to provide front Wall outer, top, inner, and bottom wall members together with a flap for attachment to the front wall outer wall member, and an extension from the back edge of the bot tom panel of a length to form a back wall outer wall member, a cover panel of an area equal to 14 the area of the bottom panel, a cover front flange, a back wall top wall member, a back wall inner wall member, a back wall bottom wall member and a glue flap whereby said back wall members are articulated to one another, said extension from the bottom panel back edge including means whereby it is severable to separate the cover flange from the back wall members, cooperating means between said side, front and back wall members for holding same in erected positions,
and tucking flaps from the ends of the front and back walls top wall member, inner wall member, bottom wall member and glue flap whereby a tucking flap of rectangular cross section is provided.
10. In a carton of the class described formed from a single blank to provide a carton proper and an integral cover therefor, the carton proper comprising a bottom panel, extensions: from the sides thereof each subdivided by score lines into a plurality of panels respectively forming a side wall having an outer wall member, a top wall member and an inner wall member, an extension from the front edge of said bottom panel subdivided by score lines into a plurality of panels together forming a front Wall having an outer, a top and an inner wall member, means integral with said front extension for securing the lower edge of the front wall inner wall member to the bottom panel, an extension from the back edge of the bottom panel subdivided by score lines to form a back wall outer wall member, a cover panel, cover front flange panels, a back wall top wall member, a back wall inner wall member, and glue flaps for securing the back wall inner wa.1 member to the bottom and the back Wall top wal member to the back wall outer wall member, said extension including means whereby it may be severed to separate the cover front flanges from the back wall top wall member glue flap, said cover panel having formed therein a score line on which it may be folded to dispose the cover panel below the carton proper, side cover flanges hingedly connected to the sides of the cover panel between the folding score line therein and the front flange to depend from the cover panel, and
means for locking the cover and side flanges in,
their depending positions and said side flanges having their free edges inclined whereby the cover acts as an easel support when folded below the carton proper.
11. In a carton of the class described formed from a single blank to provide a carton proper and an integral cover therefor, the carton proper comprising a bottom panel, extensions from the sides thereof each subdivided by score lines into a plurality of panels respectively forming a side wall having an outer wall member, a top wall member and an inner wall member, an extension from the front edge of said bottom panel subdivided by score lines into a plurality of panels together forming afront wall having an outer, a top and an inner wall member, means integral with said front extension for securing the lower edge of the front wall inner wall member to the bottom panel, an extension from the back edge of the bottom panel subdivided by score lines to form a back wall outer wall member, a cover panel, cover front flange panels, a back. wall top wall member, a back wall inner wall member, and glue flaps for securing the back wall inner wall member to the bottom and the back wall top wall member to the back wall outer wall member, said extension including means whereby it may be severed to separate the cover front flanges from 15 the back wall top wall member glue flap, said cover panel having formed therein a score line on which it may be folded to dispose the cover panel below the carton proper, side cover flanges hingedly connected to the sides of the cover panel 5 between the folding score line therein and the front flange to depend from the cover panel, said cover front flange panels being, at least, two in number adapted to be folded on themselves, and a tucking flap onveach cover panel side flange for enfoldment between the front flange panels for locking said cover panel front and side flanges in depending positions and said cover panel side flanges having their free edges inclined whereby the cover acts as an easel support when folded below the carton proper.
