Application September 9, 1933, SerialiNo. 688,847 1 Claim. (01. 220-20) The-invention relates tonew and useful imprcvements in a double compartment metal package which includes two: independent sections sep rate y, sealed andcontainin p o u ts adapted to be intermixed for use.
An object of the invention is to provide a very simple means for uniting the two sealed sections to form a unit package, which uniting means can be readily removed so as to separate the sections for opening the same to gain access to the contents thereof.

The metal package embodying the invention consists of two sections, each of which includes a metal body portion to which end closures are secured by double seaming. When an end closure is double seamed to a body portion, the meta1 overhangs the body portion, thus producing a laterally projecting ledge or rib. The two metal sections of the package are filled with their product and closed and then one is super-imposed upon the other with the double seam at the bottom end of one section resting on and contacting with the double seam at the top end of the other section. The two body portions are of uniform cross sectional configuration and therefore the two projecting ribs or ledges formed by the contacting double seams are in register. A spring metal clip, U-shaped in cross section is slipped over the contacting double seams and is held thereon through the frictional contact of the spring metal clip with the sections of the package. This unites the two sections as a unit, thus completing the package.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the
metal package embodying the improvements includes a section 1, having a body portion 2, to which is secured a top end closure 3 by means of a double seam 4. This top end closure is provided with a nozzle 5 which is sealed by a screw cap 6. The top end closure may be made without any nozzle if desired. Attached to the bottom end of the section 1 is an end closure 7,
which is secured thereto by a double seam This double seam is. of the usual construction. It is formed by rolling the peripheral flange portionof the end with a projecting'fiange on body portion into an hermetically sealed joint. The completed double seam overhangs the body wall of the section and forms a laterally projecting ledge or rib, as clearly shown in the drawing.
The metal package also includes a section 9 which is formed from a body portion 10, to which a bottom end closure is secured by a double seam 11. There is also a top end closure 12 which is secured to the body portion 10 by a double seam 13. This double seam is similar to the double seam 8 and forms a laterally projecting ledge or rib overhanging the body portion 10 of the lower section of the package. The two sections 1 and 9 are of similar cross-sectionalconfiguration. As shown in the drawing, this cross section is rectangular with rounded corners. Either section may be of different configuration but it is essential that both sections shall be of the same cross-sectional configuration.
The section 1 is superimposed upon the section 9 with the bottom end seam 8 contacting with the top end seam 13. These two seams register and produce a common projecting ledge or rib extending all the way around the package. While thus positioned, the two sections are united by slipping onto the projecting portions of these contacting double seams, a retaining clip. said retaining clip includes a central member 14 and side members 15 and 16. The central member 14 is joined to these side members by rounded sections 17-17. This spring metal clip is so formed that before it is placed on the package the members 15 and 16 incline inwardly toward each other as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing. That is, the distance between the free ends of these side members 15 and 16 is less than the distance between the curved portion 17, 17 which join said members to the central member 14. The retaining clip is U-shaped in cross section, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
After the two sections have been superimposed one upon the other and the end seams brought into register, the ends ,of the spring clip are forcibly separated and the clip slipped onto the double seam; said clip in cross section is so dimensioned that it substantially contacts with the upper face of the double seam 8 and the under face of the double seam 13. It may or may not contact with the body wall of these metal sections. The spring of the metal will hold the retaining clip in place on the double In Fig. 5 there is shown a slightly modified form of the invention wherein the retaining clip 14a terminates midway between the side ends of the sections and a second retaining clip 18 is applied from the other side of the section. Thesetwo retaining clips are similar in construction and when applied the ends .thereof are adjacent each other but not necessarily in contact.
Other forms of spring retaining devices may be used without departing from the spirit of the inv'entionas set forth in the appended claim. It-is essential, however, that these retaining devices shall be in the form of spring clips engaging the adjacent end seams of two sections in such'a way that the clips may be forcibly applied and forcibly released when desired.
Having thus described the invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A double compartment metal package comprising two independent sections each including a bodyportion and an end closure double seamed thereto and forming a laterally projecting ledge, said body portions being rectangular in cross section with rounded corners and of similar cross sectional dimensions, one of said sections being superimposed'upon the other with the end seams in contact, and a spring metal clip U-shaped in cross section and dimensioned so as to engage the upper and lower faces of the respective contacting end seams, said metal clip having the ends thereof terminating along the sides of the container, said ends when detached from the body portions being normally spaced a lesser distance than the width of the body portion of the receptacles so that said ends will yieldingly grip the ledges and hold the clip in place thereon.
