Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK RUDOLPHI, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN CAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF YEW JERSEY.
SHEET-METAL POCKET TOBACCO-B OX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 27, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK RUDOLPHI, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the countyof Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Pocket Tobacco- Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvement-s in sheet metal pocket tobacco boxes for tobacco and other articles.
My invention consists in a sheet metal pocket box having a body of long, narrow, wide form suitable for carrying in the pocket, and provided with a top head seamed or otherwise secured thereto, and having near one of its ends a pouring opening, and a central longitudinal guide slot, and a closure slide for said pouring opening provided with a raised guide and finger piece projecting through the guide slot of the top head and clenched over the edges thereof to slidably connect the closure slide with the top head, and at the same time afiord a finger hold or projection for operating the inside fitting slide from the outside.
My invention further consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet metal pocket tobacco box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a vertical cross section on line 33 of F 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of the closure slide and Fig. 6 is a detial vertical cross section illustrating a modification in which the top head has a slip cover connection with the body instead of being seamed thereto. Fig. 7 is a detail cross sectional view similar to Fig. 2, showing the top head and closure slide assembled, but before the upwardly projecting guide and finger piece bend in the closure slide is clenched or pressed down to secure the parts together.
In the drawing, 1 represents the sheet metal body'of my improved-tobacco box, the same having an internally projecting lock side seam 2, and being of long, narrow,
Wide form with curved or rounded edge walls 3, 3 to adapt the box for pocket use.
4 is the bottom head of the box, it preferably having a countersunk wall 5 fitting inside the body and secured thereto by a double or other folded sea-m 6. j
7 is the top head of the box, the same being either permanently or removably secured to the body as may be preferred. It is furnished with a countersink wall 8 fitting inside the upper end of the body, and it may be either permanently secured to the body by a double or other folded seam 9, as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, or have a slip cover flange 10 surrounding and embracing the upper end of the body, as illustrated in Fig. 6 to removably secure it to the body.
The top head 7 has a pouring opening 11 near one end thereof, and a central longitudinal rectangular guide slot 12 at its middle portion. The pouring openin 11 in the top head is closed by an inside fitting closure slide 13, which is provided with an integral upwardly projecting guide and finger piece bend or member 14, having reverse folds or projections 15 at the edges thereof to overlap and engage the longitudinal edges 16 of the'guide slot 12 of the top head. The integral upwardly projecting bend 14 with the reverse folds 15 thereof at its edges serves to very securely and snugly connect the closure slide with the top head so as to produce a tight closure both of the pouring opening and of the guide slot in the top head, and at the same time affords a projection for engagement of the finger or thumb in opening and closing the slide 13. At the same time, both the top, head and the closure slide are of exceedingly simple form, and capable of being readily assembled and'secured togethervby a simple clenching or compressing operation on the upwardly projecting bend 14 of the closure slide after it is inserted through the guide slot of the top head.
I claim 1. A pocket tobacco box having a top head furnished with a pouring opening at one end and a central longitudinal guide slot, of an inside fitting closure slide having an integral guide and finger piece bend inserted through the guide slot of the top head,
and provided with reverse folds at its edges 7 overlapping the edges of the guide slot and slot in the top head and furnished With reguide slot, substantially as specified.
together and afiord a finger hold for operating the slide, substantially as specified.
2. In a receptacle, the combination With a top head having a pouring opening and a \Vitnesses: guide slot, of a shde having an lntegral H. M. MUNDAY, bent portion pr0 ect1ng through the gulde i PEARL ABRAMS.
I the top head to slidably connect said parts verse folds overlapping the edges of the 10 FRANK RUDOLPHI.
