i regresa GEORGE W. WEBER, OF ANEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGN- OR TO AMERICAN GAN COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
SHEET-METAL TOBACCO-BOX.
To all whom it 'may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sheet-Metal Tobacco-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sheet metal pocket tobacco boxes.
The object of my invention is to provide a sheet metal pocket tobacco box of a simple, eiicient and durable construction, composed of few parts and capable of being cheaply manufactured, of convenient s ape for carrying inthe ppcket, and which will be suitable for use as a container for tobacco and cigarette paper, and also as a cigar case after the tobacco has been used, and in which the cover will serve as a trough in which to lay the pa er while the tobacco is being evenly distri .uted therein and the surplus tobacco conveniently returned into the box.
My invention consists in the means herein shown and described which l employ to practically accomplish this object or result, the same being more specically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure .1 is a front elevation of a sheet metal tobacco box embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. .Fig 4 is a detail longitudinal i section through the cover on line 4 4 of l Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail section on line 5--5 of Fig. 2. Fig.- 6 is a detail cross section illustrating-a modification and Fig. 7 is a detail longitudinal section illustrating a modification of the catch or fastener forthe In the drawin 1 re resents the body of my sheet metal com ined tobacco ccntainer and cigar case, 2 the cigarette paper holder, 3 the cover, 4, 5 interengagmg fastener or catch devices with which the cover and body are provided for holding the cover closed and 6 the hinge pin of the cover. iThe long thin, flat body 1 hasv a curved or roundedend 7 and curved or| rounded side edges 8, and the cover 3 is also curved or rounded so that' the two end edges as well as the twol side edges of the long thin Patentednpru 27, 1909.
Serial No. 440,069.
| flat narrow box is substantially'free from corners, and thus rendered suitable for convenient pocket use.
The body of the sheet metal box is made in one integral piece, its back' 9 being integral with the front 10 and with the curved bottom end 11. The back member 9 and the integral front member 10 are united at their meeting edges by longitudinally extending folded or lock seams 12, the rounded side edges 8 of the box being thus one half formed on the back member 9 and one half formed `in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, thus securing thepaper holder to the front of the box.
The cover 3 is of a curved or trough shape to cover the curved mouth end of the body 1, and it is furnished with an offset member 18 to cover the upper end or mouth of the paper holder and with an integral flap member 19, furnished with an inte ral catch or fastener 4 engaging a correspon 'ng catch or fastener device 5 on the body 1. The catches or fasteners 4, 5 are each preferably Lstamped integrally in the sheet metal, as illustrated in the drawing. The flap 19 of the hinged cover may be furnished with a roll 22 at its z lower end to facilitate disengagement of t-he catch or fastener devices. The hinge pin or pintle 6 extends through suitable hinge eyes or ears 23, 24 formed integrally on the cover and on the back of the box. At the diagonal pints 25 where the rounded back shell men er 9 and the rounded front shell member 10 meet the integral rounded end 11, the meeting edges are preferably united by solder,
thus forming a smooth butt joint. The box is provided, .preferably on the cover, with an integral corrugation 26 for convenience in scratchingmatches.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 6, thefront member 10 othe box body is fur'- nished with an outwardly rojecting integral countersunk portion 27 to crm the outer wail of the paper receptacle, and the inner wall of such receptacle 1s formed by a sheet metal strip 28 soldered or otherwise securedfon` the inside of the box body.-
In the -modification illustrated in Fig. 7, the catch member 28 on the box body consists of a simple hole or opening therein and the corresponding catch member or fastening device on the flap of the hinge-'cover consists in a brass rlvet secured to the cover ilap, and adapted to engage the edge of the gpning in the member secured to the box The outer wall of the paper receptacle or holder is preferably furnished with a curved notch 29 at its upper edge to facilitate the removal of the sheets of cigarette pa er.
rlhe upper end of the paper hol er stops somewhat short of the upper end of the front of the box body so that the curved or trough 'sha ed cover'S may have at itsportion 30 a flat caring against the rojecting upper end 31 of the box body, an thus aord a secure closure for both the tobacco receptacle of the box body and the paper holder thereof. The hinged trough shaped cover 3 thus serves not only as a curved trough to receive thel cigarette paper while the tobacco is being distribute evenly in the same and the sur- 'lus tobaccoreturned to the box, but it also Jerves as a closure for both the tobacco receptacle of the box and forI the paper receptacle thereof.
