WILLIAM A. BRADENQOF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES vR.
YATES, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO,
MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 15, 1921.
Application filed September 20, 1919. Serial No. 325,056.
To all whom it may, concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BRADEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of .Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in lgatch-Boxes, of which the following is a fu clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention'relates to a new and useful article of manufacture, being a receptacle designed for attachment to a tobacco or cigarette box and has for its objects to provide a box which can be readily attached to any standard tobacco-tin usually found in the market; to provide a receptacle for conveniently and safely carrying matches and which is transferrable from one box to another; to provide a box simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture, while further objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawing wherein I have shown an illustrative embodiment of my said invention, Figure l is a perspective view of the receptacle; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the receptacle showing the means for attaching it to a tobacco can; Fig.
- 3 is a perspective view showing the receptacle attached to the cover of a" tobacco can; and Fig. 4 is asection through the tobacco can and receptacle,
Describin the various parts by reference numerals, 1 indicates the body of the receptacle which is made of sheet metal and bent about a form to the desired shape and fastened by any suitable means as indicated at 2. A cover '3 is hingedly connected to the body portion as shown at 4, and an embossed rib 5 on the body limits the degree of closing of the cover. A bottom 6 which has its edges 7 turned over at right angles to the bottom is secured in the body in any suitable manner as by crimping or soldering and is so positioned as to allow the edges of the bodyto project below the bottom and form the flanged portion 8. The size of the body and bottom is so chosen that the flan ed portion 8 will fit snugly over the cover of a standard tobacco tin 10.
By suitably choosing the size of this box 1t will adhere so tightly to the cover of the tobacco tin as to act as a handle for opening the cover thereof, and will not become easily displaced. Owing to its height which is preferably equal at least to its thickness, it is possible to open the cover 3 without displacing the matchbox from its position on the cover 9 or from displacing that cover from its closed position.
The flange 8 of the match box is preferably cut away at one point as shown at 11 to accommodate the hinge of the cover 9.
It will be understood that the foregoing is only one of the many physical forms in which my invention can be embodied and that many changes can be made within the scope of my claims. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I which conforms to and fits frictionally upon said cover and, is notched for the reception of the hinge, and also having at its opposite end a hinged cover which is similar to the cover of the first box. a
2. As an article of manufacture, a match box having the cross section of a standard, pocket size tobacco tin, said box having at one end a bottom spaced inside its .body and defining a flange adapted to receive and adhere frictionally to the cover of such a tin, and having at its opposite end a hinged cover which overlaps the walls of the match box, a portion of said flange being interrupted for the reception of the hinge whereby the cover of the main tin is attached.
Intestimony whereof, I hereunto aflix my signature.
WILLIAM A. BRADEN.
