B. M. BERNARD COMBINATION SMOKER'S SET Filed May 125, 1922 lNVENTOF ATTORN EY Patented 0st. 30, 1923.
UNETED STATESv intatte BERNARD MARK BERN-ARD, OF SIOUX CITY, IOW.
COMBINATION SMOKERS SET.
Application led May 13,
ceptacle for smokes of various kinds, es-l pecially cigarettes, a separate space for matches and another for ashes together with means for closing the same, when not in use, to exclude the air and dust, etc.. separate covers or closures being provided for the ash tray and the cigarette and match compartments so that either or both may be raised as desired.
Another object is to provide a holder of this class whereby, when the main closure is opened, thecigarettes and the matches are exposed in a position to be readily ex tracted, the cigarettes being then in upright position, the sides of the container, having match igniting means formed thereon, being in spaced relation from the matches so that the match in use may not ignite those remaining in their container when the same is struck.
A further object is to provide means for closing the cigarette and match sections of the holder and of exposing the ash rcceiver, the cover or closure for the latter be-ing capable of being elevated `for 'this purpose and to place in position spaced supports for burning cigarettes, the said cover being held in upright position and prevented from accidental closing movement.
A full and complete understanding of lthe invention may be obtained from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, it being understood that while the drawing shows a practical form' of the invention, the latter is not confined to strict conformity therewith, but may be changed or modified, lso long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention, as specifically pointed out in the appended claims. v
1922. Serial No. 560,652,
ln the drawing, in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several figures:
Figure l is a perspective of the improved device in closed position;
Figure 2 is a similar view, the cover for the ash tray being opened;
Figure 3 is another perspective View showing both the closures in opened position;
Figure 4 is a detail section showing the manner of hinging the cover for the ash tray or compartment.
In the drawing there is illustrated a rectangular box. preferably formed of some thin sheet material. and comprising an impertorate bottom l, side walls 2 and end walls 3. This box is preferably somewhat elongated in plan view and formed of a single sheet of metal or other material, the sides and ends being bent upwardly to stand perpendicular to the base and having the end edges of the latter soldered, or similarly secured together, to avoid any overlapping of the metal at the joints.
A transversely disposed partition wall 4, of equal height with the sides and ends of the box, is soldered or secured within the latter adjacent to one end 3 to constitute a match receptacle 5, the said partition wall 4 having a centrally disposed cut out portion 6 to facilitate Aremoval of the matches when the supply is low.
Adjacentto the other end of the box is similarly secured a second transverse partition 7 whose upper edge is straight and preferably below the upper edges ot' the sides 2. said partition defining a space at the opposite end of the box to constitute an ash receptacle 8, the distance between the two partitions 4 and 7 being somewhat greater than the length of an ordinary cigarette and the distance between the sides 22 being slightly greater than the width of an ordinary package of the same, these dimensions depending. however. orrtlie kind et smokes to be held in the holder, as it is to be understood that the improved holder may be proportioned to hold cigars or stogies. etc. of different sizes.
A cover 9 formed of a flat sheet ot metal is adapted to extend, when closed. over the central chamber 10 located between the two partitions 4 and 7 and over the match receptacle, said cover extending slightly be- `vond the end wall 3 adjacent to the match receptacle to form a finger hold 11 to facilitate raising the cover and the latter may have, if desired, a surrounding, depending flange to hug the end and sides, in a well known manner.
The opposite end edge of the cover is located over the upper edge of the transverse partition 7, anda pair of ears 12 are formed integrally therewith and bent downwardly, at the rear end ot' the cover, to fit against the outer faces of the side walls 2, to which the ears are pivoted by rivets 13. as clearly shown.
To the under side of thatl portion ot' the v cover 9 which overlies the central chamber 10, is secured a pocket for receiving and holding a-package of cigarettes 14 or other kind of smoke, the said pocketheing formed of sheet metal, soldered in position and comprising a bottom wall. a side wall 15 arranged parallel with the under side of the cover and end walls 16 which latter' are provided with a match-scratching or igniting surface at each side of the pocket, the same being formed by punching the metal to provide outstanding points 17 in a wel] known manner.
In placing the cigarettes into the pocket, it is only necessary to remove a portion of one end of the package and. while the cigarettes are confined by the remaining portion of the wrapper or package, the same may be placed into the pocket and exposed to view, when the cover 9 is raised, as shown in F igure 3 of the drawing and at the same time access may be had to the matches in the receptacle 5.
The ash receptacle 8 is provided with a lid or cover 18, likewise formed of a sheet of metal having, at the end edge adjacent to the end wall 3 of the box, downwardly extending ears 19 adapted to lie on the outside of the side walls 2 of the box and pivoted thereto by rivets 20 located close to the said end wall 3, so that the Said lid may be swung into closing relation to the ash receptacle or raised into upri ht position to afford access to the same. T 1e rear edge of the cover 18 which rests upon the upper edge ot the adjacent end wall 3 is slightly deflected, as indicated at 21, so that, when the cover is raised to upv right position, the same will rest fiat against the rear face of the Wall 3, while the major portion of said cover will incline slightly to the'rear and thus maintain the saine insuch position to prevent accidental fallin into closed position. as clearly shown in igure 4. It will also be seen, by reference to this figure, that the cover will snap into either the open or the closed position by reason of the position of the rivet 20 causing the under face of the cover to pass the corner edge of the wall 3 in passing in either direction.
The free edge of the cover 18 is provided with a pair of spaced rests 22, -preferably formed integrally with the same by providing spaced extensions and bending the same back against the under side of the lid and 4curving their tree ends into semi-circular loops into which, when the cover is raised, may be placed a burning cigarette The front edge of the cover 18 is provided with a raised flange 23 adapted to overlie the adjacent rear edge of the cover 9 when the latter is closed, so that there-will be no open space between the upper edges of the sides 2 and the said cover 18.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple, cheaply manufactured combination match, ash and cigarette or cigar holder has been provided, which aii'ords convenient means for exposing the matches and cigarettes, or 'the ash receptacle, or both when desired, and for closing the same when not in use, the ashes being readily dumped or emptied therefrom by simply holding the cover 9 in closed position and inverting the box, and that the matches may be struck against the sides of thepocket or holder for the cigarettes, without any danger of accidentally igniting the remainder of the matches Vin the receptacle 5.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described, coinprising an elongated box open at the top and having transverse partitions in spaced relation to each end to define two end chambers and a larger, central chamber, a cover hingedly connected at one end of the box to cover the adjacent end chamber, which constitutes an ash receptacle, and to be swung upwardly in vertical position, supports carried by the free edge of the cover to receive burning cigarettes when the cover is raised and to be lio-used in the chamber when the cover is closed,- and a second cover hinged to the sides of the box to extend over the opposite end chamber, constituting a match receptacle, and the central chamber, and having a depending pocket on its under side fitting into the latter chamber, said pocket being open at one end to carry a package of cigarettes and expose the same vfor withdrawal when the cover is in raised position.
2. A device ofthe class described, comprising an elongated box open at the top and having transverse partitions in spaced relation to each end to define two end chambers and a larger, central chamber, a cover v lau fettes and expose the same for Withdrawal when 'the cover is in raised position, the w sides of the pocket being serrated for striking matches thereon.
In testimony that I ciaim the foregoing as my own, have hereto affixed my signe,-
ture.
BERNARD MARK BERNARD.
