BOTTLE-STOPPIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan, 111, 1916:.
Application filed January 14, 1914. Serial No. 812,001.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRED EVANS and GUsTAvUs A. DURYEE, citizens of the United States, residing in Summit, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improvement in bottle stoppers of the sheet-metal-sealing-cap variety, and the object is to provide a device of the character named with means for removing the bottle stopper from the neck of the bottle.
With the foregoing objects in view, our invention consists in a lined sheet-metal cap, having a clamping flange to extend down on the outer side of the bottle to have holding engagement therewith, said cap being provided with means, preferably a piece of tape or other suitable material secured thereto in any convenient manner, for removing the bottle stopper from the neck of the bottle without the aid of other devices now so commonly used.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our improved bottle stopper as it appears sealed to-the neck of a bottle. Fig. 2 represents a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a plan view of the stopper; and Figs. 4 and 5 represent side elevations of modified forms of stoppers as they appear sealed to the neck of a bottle.
Similar numerals of reference refer to like parts throughout the specification and In the drawings, 1 represents a cap made of sheet metal, and provided-with a crimped clamping flange 2, designed to extend down on the outer side of the bottle to have holding engagement therewith, asis customary in this type of caps.
3 represents a thin lining of paper, cork,
fabric or the like, held inside of the sheetmetal cap, which may, before inserting in the cap. be treatedwith paraffin or the like, and capable of being distorted and wedged over the mouth of the bottle to assume the exact shape of said mouth, when said cap is secured to the neck of the bottle.
-i represents, preferably,,,a piece of linen tape or other suitable material, conveniently interposed and secured between the sheet upward pull, can be efiectively and speedil removed from the neck of the bottle without the aid of any of the numerous devices now so extensively employed.
.In the modification illustrated in Fig. 4; of the drawings, we provide in the top of the cap 1 simultaneously with the forming of the cap from the blank and before the llnlng or cushion 3 is inserted, a pair of alined slots 5 for the reception and through which the tape 4 or other suitable material 1s passed, as illustrated in said View; and in Fig. 5 of the drawings, which illustrates another form of our improved bottle stopperfwe provide in the clamping flange 2 of the cap 1 simultaneously with the forming of the cap from the blank, and also before the lining or cushion 3 is inserted, an aperture 6 for the reception of the tape 4, as clearly indicated in the drawing.
Any suitable advertisement or the like may be impressed upon the cap 1 and tape a if desired.
Experience has demonstrated that the organization above described is a highly efiicient one, and while the device described is the preferred embodiment of our present invention, we do not care to restrict ourselves tothe exact details of construction, arrangements and combination herein set forth, it being obvious that minor variations thereof, not involving the exercise of invention may be made by any skilled mechanic, and such departure from what is herein described and claimed, not involving invention, we consider within the scope and terms of our claims.
We claim: I
1. As a new article of manufacture, a bottle stopper comprising a cap having a clamping flange to extend down on the outside of a bottle to have holding engagement therewith, and a tape secured in an aperture formed in the clamping flanges of the cap between the upper and lower edges thereof and projecting beyond the clamping edge of the cap for removing the bottle stopper from the neck of the bottle.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a
bottle stopper comprising a disk-lined cap having a clamping flange to extend down on the outside of a bottle to have holding engagement therewith, and means removably secured in an opening formed in the clamping flange of said cap, said means projecting beyond the clamping edge of the cap for removing the bottle stopper from the neck of the bottle.
8. As a new article of manufacture, a bottle stopper comprising a cap having a clamping flange to extend down on the outside of a bottle to have holding engagement therewith, and flexible-means removably secured in an opening located in the clamping flange of said cap, the ends of said flexible mer er? means projecting beyond the edge of the cap for removing the bottle stopper from the neck of the bottle.
4:. As a newarticle of manufacture, a bottle stopper comprising a cap having a crimped clamping flange to extend down on the outside of a bottle to have holding engagement therewith, and flexible means interposed between the neck of the bottle and the inside of the clamping flange, said flexible means being secured in an opening 10-.
cated in said clamping flange of said cap, the ends of said flexible means projecting beyond the edge of the cap for removing the bottle stopper from the neck of the bottle.
This specification signed and witnessed this tenth day of January, 1914:.
