1 Claim.
This invention relates to bottle caps, and more particularly to resilient, removable bottle caps of a type which can be applied to or removed from the top of a bottle over and over again.
A main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved bottle cap of the type which may be applied to and removed from the neck or spout of a bottle repeatedly, as desired, the cap being very simple in construction, being easy to manipulate, and providing a tight seal.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved resilient, spring locking bottle cap which is very inexpensive to manufacture, which involves only a few parts, and which may be applied and removed by very simple manual operations.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top view of an improved bottle cap constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is a vertical cross-sectional view taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1, showing the bottle cap mounted on the top of a bottle;
Figure 3 is a side elevational view of the bottle cap of Figures 1 and 2 shown mounted on a bottle;
Figure 4 is an enlarged cross-sectional detail View taken on line 4--4 of Figure 3;
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the bottle cap of Figures 1 to 4.
Referring to the drawings, the improved bottle cap comprises a main, resilient sealing body II which is circular in shape and which is formed of rubber or other suitable deformable elastic material. The sealing member I I is molded with an outer depending annular liange I2 and an irmer depending annular flange I3 which is substantially longer and thicker than the outer flange I2, and which is adapted to be sealingly fitted into the neck of a bottle, such as the bottle I4 shown in Figures 2 and 3. Designated at I5 is a resilient, flat, metal cover member which extends across the main sealing member II and which is formed with depending anges I6 and I1 which are engaged over the outer annular flange I2 of the sealing member II, the depending flanges being inwardly turned at I8 and I9 to define gripping fingers adapted to engage lockingly with the top bead, indicated at 25, of the bottle I4. Interposed between the flange II and the ange I2, as shown in Figure 2, is a depending lever 20, said lever being formed at its intermediate portion with horizontal notches 2|, 2I which receive the marginal portions of a notch 22 formed at the intermediate portion of the inturned liange element I9. The horizontal notches 2I, 2I on the lever 20 and the notch 22 on the inturned end I9 of the ange Il of the cover member I5 constitute interengaging means for connecting the lever 20 to the flange I1 of the cover member I5.
In using the bottle cap, the cap is placed on top of the bottle and pressure is applied to the central portion of the cover member I5, causing said central portion to ex downwardly and a1- lowing the flanges I6 and I'I to be slipped over the top bead of the bottle, the inner flange I3 of the sealing member I I being meanwhile pushed into the bottle opening. When the resilient cover I5 is released, it restores itself to its normal configuration, wherein the flanges I8 and I9 lockingly engage beneath the top bead I9 of the bottle in the manner shown in Figure 2, the bottle opening being sealed by the engagement over the rim thereof of the elastic sealing member II. If the bottle contains gas under pressure, as in the case of carbonated beverages, the gas pressure exerts an upward force on the central portion of the cap, causing the cover member I5 to be bowed upwardly and increasing the gripping action of the ange elements I8 and I9. To remove the cap it is merely necessary to grasp the lower end of the lever 29 and exert an upward and outward force thereon, thereby separating the flange I'I from the bead 25, whereby the bottle cap may be lifted off the top of the bottle.
It is obvious that the bottle cap above described may be employed over and over again, and that by the use thereof a bottle may be sealed in a gas tight manner, whereby beverages in the bottle will not suffer any deterioration or loss of iiavor.
While a speciic embodiment of an improved removable and replaceable bottle cap has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A bottle cap comprising a generally circular sealing member formed of elastic deformable material, an outer depending annular flange carried by said sealing member, an inner depending annular flange carried by said sealing member, a cover member of thin resilient metal extending across the top of said sealing member, depending inturned anges at the respective ends of said cover member, and a depending lever disposed between the outer depending annular ange o! the sealing member and one of the depending anges of the cover member, said one of the cover member depending flanges being notched at its inturned portion and the lever tting in the notch and being notched at its sides to intert with the margins of the notch of said inturned portion.
