To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES LAFAYETTE MOUNT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carman, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to attachments for bottles or other dispensing vessels and has for its object to provide a very simple and novel device whereby the extraction of the stopper and the refilling of the bottle without detection is effectually prevented.
Another object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the above character which is more particularly designed for application to the neck of a bottle, said device encircling the bottle neck and having a flexible strip integrally formed therewith to extend through a cap arranged on the bottle and to be folded over upon the same, the attempt to withdraw the strip for the removal of the cap resulting in the destruction of the device so that the fact that the bottle has been refilled will be at once apparent to the purchaser.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a stopper holder for dispensing vessels which may be manufactured at an ex tremely low cost and which is also very eflicientin practical use for the purpose above set forth. I
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists-0f the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bottle neck showing my improved attachment arranged thereon; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same; Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the attachment shown in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings B designates the neck of the bottle or other dispensing vessel which may be of any desired shape or form. Upon the bottle neck my improved stopper retaining attachment is adapted to be arranged as clearly shown in the drawings. This attachment is constructed and attached to the bottle neck in the following manner.
The device is preferably formed from heavy tin plate which, however, is pliable and may be readily bent. The metal sheet is adapted to be cut or stamped out to form the attachment by means of a suitable die, the blank which is thus provided consisting of an annular body band 5 and an elongated flexible strip 6 centrally extending from said band. This strip is of sufficient length to extend across the top of the bottle neck upon the opposite side thereof as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The annular body band 5 is formed at a point opposite the flexible strip 6 with a loop 7 which is struck out from the material as clearly shown in Fig. 5 The strip 6 is adapted to be inserted through this loop as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
Upon the top of the bottle neck B a metal cap C is adapted to be disposed, said cap resting upon the annular bead B formed upon the bottle neck. The usual cork stopper D is arranged between the under side of the cap and the bottle neck to render the bottle air-tight. The metal cap C is provided with slots C at diametrically opposite points in its annular wall and through these slots the flexible strip 6 is adapted to be passed. The flexible metal strip 6 is scored or weakened intermediate of its ends as shown at 9 and this scored or weakened portion of the strip, when the strip has been passed through the' loop or strap 7 on the body band 5 is disposed at the lower edge of said strap. From this point the remainder of the strip 6 is bent down upon the top of the bottle cap C. When the attachment is thus arranged upon the bottle neck, when it is desired to dispense the liquid or other material from the bottle, the end of the strip 6 which rests upon the cap C is bent upwardly and the end portion of said strip forced outwardly and downwardly upon one side of the bottle neck. Owing to the fact that the strip is weakened at the bend thereof immediately below the strip or loop 8, the end portion of the strip 6 will break off when it is bent reversely to the manner in which it is bent in the application of the attachment to the bottle neck. The remainder of the strip 6 is then drawn through the cap C and the cap removed together with the cork stopper D so that the contents of the bottle can be dispensed. The attachment can now no longer be used for securing the cap in position and it would be at once obvious to an intending purchaser that the bottle had been fraudulently refilled or an imitation of the original contents of the bottle is placed therein and offered for sale. The manufacturer will of course acquaint the purchasing public with the fact that the bottles containing his particular product are provided With the attachments.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and operation of my improved bottle attachment for preventing bottles and other vessels being refilled Without detection Will be readily understood. It will further be obvious that the device can be manufactured at an extremely low cost and will af- 1 ford the consumer as Well as the manufacl grally formed from one edge of said band, and a loop formed on said band opposite the point of connection of said strip thereto,
said loop being formed by slitting the band and projecting the freed portion thereof out- 5 wardly whereby the same extends beyond the bead on the bottle neck, said strip being extended over the top of the bottle neck to retain the closure cap thereon and disposed .1
through said loop and bent upon itself, the extremity of said strip being bent downwardly into engagement with the top of the closure cap.
2. The combination .With a bottle having a neck, a closure cap arranged over the mouth of the bottle neck, of a retaining member comprising an annular metal band arranged on the bottle neck, said neck hav- 1ng an annular bead thereon to prevent the removal of the band, a pliable metal strip integrally formed with the band, said closure cap having slots at opposite points in its annular wall to receive said strip, a loop formed upon the band at a point opposite the juncture of the strip therewith, said strip being adapted to be passed through said loop and bent upwardly upon itself and upon the top of the closure cap, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
