To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Jesse N. PRINGLE, a

citizen of the United States, residin at Ortega, in the county of Duval and State of Florida, have invented new and useful sive and sanitary guard, readily applicable to the mouth of a bottle after the removal of a closure cap therefrom, and adapted to yielding? retain itself in working position, and to e ectively prevent the lips or tongue of a drinker from contacting with the bottle mouth, and this without liability of any of the contents of the bottlegetting between the guard and the glass ofthe bottle mouth. After its use in the manner and for the purpose set forth, my novel guard is adapted to be expeditiously and easily sprung off the usual enlargement on the bottle neck, so as not to add in any measure to the work involved in the thorough cleansing of the bottle.

To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

In Fig 1 and 2, 'Ishow my novel guard as appli d to the mouth of a bottle having on its neck 2 an exterior enlargement or hip 33. Such bottles, as is well known, are generally used in the distribution of soft drinks.

My novel guard, for the sake of cheapness, is formed of waterproof paper, such as waxed or paraffin paper, and is pressed into the shape shown so that the guard comprises a cylindrical wall 4, a bead 5 at the iower end thereof, and an inwardly reachmg annular. flange .6' at the upper end of the cylindrical wall and continuous therewith; the said flange being disposed at approximate right angles sogas-to rest in opposed relation to'the' end 7 of the bottle neck, and being of such width that its free edge 8 will rest fiushwith the inner side 9 of the orifice wall of the mouth.

Manifestly after the closure cap is removed from a bottle, in novel guard may be expeditiously and easily slipped over the mouth, and when the guard is so applied, its head 5 will hug or spring past the hip or enlargement 3 on the bottle neck, and therefore will serve to yieldingly retain theguard' in working position. It is to be understood in this connection, however, that after use, the guard may be readily removed from the bottle mouth by exerting a little endwise outward stress on the guard so as to spring the bead 5 outwardly past the hip or enlargement 3.

In the practical use of my novel guard applied in the manner stated, the lips of the drinker will be applied to the cylindrical wall 4 of the guard, and the. tongue of the drinker is applied to the flange 6. It 'follows from this that both the lips and the tongue of the drinker will be kept from contact with the glass of thebottle, and at the same time, the tongue of the drinker will, by pressing the flange 6 against the end. of the bottle neck, preclude the possibility of any of the liquid getting between the guard and the outer side of the bottle neck. From this it follows that incidental to the use of my novel guard, there is no liability of the exterior of the bottle neck being covered with liquid, as when the bottle is set down 95 in upright position after a portion of the contents thereof have been removed.

It will be readily appreciated from the foregoing that notwithstanding its capacity to form a sanitary guard for the mouth of 100 a bottle when a person drinks out of the mouth, my novel guard is extremely simple and inexpensive.
