a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of Improvements in Bottle-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cover which is more particularly designed for use on milk bottles after the ordinary paper disk or cover has been removed therefrom, but the same is also useful as a closure for other bottles in place of ordinary corks or other closures.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a milk bottle equipped with my improved cover, the parts being represented in the position which they occupy when pouring the liquid from the bottle. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section taken at right angles to Fig. 1, and showing the parts in the position which they occupy when the bottle stands upright. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lid forming part cover and showing the same in an inverted position. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the supporting sleeve and constituting another proved bottle cover.

The bottle shown in the drawings for illustrating the use of my invention is like that commonly employed for packing or dispensing milk, the same comprising a neck 1 provided near the outer end of its bore facing internal shoulder 2 against which the ordinary paper disk or cover is seated in the usual and well known manner for closing the bottle and protecting its contents fro-m the time that the same is filled until it reaches the customer. In its general organization my improved cover comprises a split spring ring or sleeve 3 which is secured in the neck of the bottle and a lid 4 movably connected with the sleeve. In order to prevent this supporting sleeve from being pushed too far into the neck the same is provided with a laterally projecting shoulder 6 which is preferably provided by-forming a laterally projecting annular flange at the outer end of this sleeve which engages with the outwardly facingshoulder 2 in the bore of the bottle neck for limiting the inward movement of the sleeve in the same. Diametrically opposite the place where the supporting sleeve is split the same is provided at its outer end with an outwardly projecting attaching shank 7 Which is formed integrally with the sleeve and is preferably curved slightly laterally. The lid is also preferably constructed of aluminum or other non-corrosive metal or material in the form of a disk which is raised or dished upwardly in the central part 8 thereof so as to increase its strength while its marginal part is adaptedto rest upon the outer end of the neck of the bottle and close the bore thereof. On one side of the center of this disk the same is provided with a slot 9 which is parallel with a line ter of the disk which slot receives the shank of the supporting sleeve and forms a pivotal connection bet-weenthe sleeve and the lid may either be swung downwardly against the neck of the bottle for closing the same, as shown in Fig. 2, or the lid may be swung away from the end of the neck to permit of discharging the liquid contents of the bottle, as shown in Fig. 1. The lid is prevented from becoming detached from the attaching shank by indenting or raising a part of the shank outside of the lid, as shown at 10 in Figs. 1 and 2, this raised portion being higher than the width of the slot 9 so as to permit the lid to move freely on the shank but prevent disengagement of these parts.-
drawn through the cen-' Projecting piece is curved downwardly and constructed to form a pointed spur or bar 13, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, which spur may be utilized as a tool for removing the paper cover disk from the bottle preparatory to applying my improved cover thereto.
Inasmuch as this cover consists of but two parts which are of simple construction and capable of being easily cleaned this device is perfectly sanltary and is very useful in protecting the contents of the bottle from. contamination which would be likely to occur if the bottle were left uncovered or were again covered with the original paper disk after the same had been perforated in the act of removing the same from the bottle. This device is therefore not only very practical and sanitary but the same can also be very readily manipulated and manufactured at comparatively low cost.
I claim as my invention:
1. A bottle cover comprising a sleeve adapted to be inserted in the neck of a bottle and provided with an upwardly projecting shank, and a lid adapted to engage with the outer end of the bottle and provided with a slot which receives said shank.
2. A bottle cover comprising a sleeve adapted to be inserted in the neck of a bottle and provided with an upwardly proje cting shank, and a lid adapted to engage wit the outer end of the bottle and provided with a slot which receives said shank, said shank being provided outside of said lid with a raised portion for confining the lid on said shank.
3. A bottle cover comprising a sleeve adapted to be inserted in the neck of a bottle and provided with an upwardly projecting shank, and a lid adapted to engage with the outer end of the bottle and provided with a slot which receives said shank and with a fingerpiece outside of said slot.
4:. A bottle cover comprising a sleeve adapted to be inserted in the neck of a bottle and provided with an upwardlyprojecting shank, and a lid adapted to engage with the outer end of the bottle and provided with a slotwhich receives said shank and with a fingerpiece projecting laterally from the lid outside of its slot.
