HARRY F. SUIT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
BOTTLE-CLOSURE.
Application filed. June 24, 1915. Serial No. 36,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY F. SUIT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to bottle closures, and more particularly to the class of detachable milk bottle caps.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this character wherein the same can be detachably mounted upon the mouth edge of a bottle so as to close the same and to permit the convenient dispensing of the-contents of the bottle, the said cap when closed being designed to tightly seal the mouth of the bottle so as. to render the contents thereof thoroughly sanitary and fresh.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this characterwherein its construction is novel in form so that it can be used both at home and when traveling, thereby rendering the dispensing of the contents of the bottle easy and will tightly seal the said bottle while the user is traveling so as to avoid the spilling of the contents.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this character wherein the same is resiliently clipped upon the mouth edge of the bottle so that it can be A readily detached therefrom and the lever for opening and closing the cap is formed with a pointed end so that the ordinary pasteboard disk used in closing the mouth of the bottle can be extracted therefrom with ease prior to the mounting of the cap upon the bottle, and in event of the necessity for transportation of the bottle the cap can be I employed to tightly seal the mouth thereof without possibility of leakage of the con tents therefrom while in. transit.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this character which can be quickly removed from one hottle and connected with another as the occasion may demand.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a cap of this character which can be opened by the same hand of the operator Which'is employed when cantmg the bottle to dispense its contents.
A still further object of the inventionis the provision of a cap of this character Specification of Letters Patent.

purpose, strong, durable, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, comblnation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing :-Figure 1- is a fragmentary perspective view of a bottle showing the cap constructed in accordance with the invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view showing the cap in open position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the resilient clip for mounting the cap on the bottle. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view through the pivotal connection of the cap with the clip. Fig. 5is a perspective view of a modified form of resilient clip for the mounting of the cap upon the bottle. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. l, showing the modified form tional view through a bottle showing the center plug of the cap sealing the mouth of the bottle when used in the transportation of the same.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views'in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates a portion of a bottle which is in the form of any standard size of milk bottle, having the usual external mouth rim B and the internal annular seat C for accommodating the ordinary pasteboard disk-like closure cap, which when removed from the mouth of the bottle is ordinarily destroyed, and as is well known is used for the initial sealing thereof.
The bottle cap or closure comprises a substantially semi-circular shaped resilient clip 10 which is channeled in cross section correspondingly to the external surface of the mouth rim 10 of the bottle A for detachably embracing the same. Formed on the upper edge of the clip 10 medially thereof is a a Embracing the substantially U-shaped pivot Y or pintle members 12 are the coils or convolutions 19 of a spring 20 which is preferably made from a single strand of resilient wire, and has the extremities thereof working respectively against the clip 10 and the lever 15 so as to normally hold the main body 13 of the cap against the mouth edge of the bottle A or in closed position.
Removably fitted in the central opening- 14 in the main body 13 is a stopper 21 preferably made from porcelain, and is formed with a reduced annular inner portion 22 provided with a peripheral groove 23 forming a seat for detachably receiving a resilient washer or gasket 24 which detachably secures the stopper to the main body 13 of the cap and also acts as a sealing medium for the mouth of the bottle A when the cap is in closed position. i
The cap, as will be apparent, can be used at home for closing the milk bottle after removing the initial sealing wafer or disk cap therefrom, which is ordinarily destroyed, and upon detaching the stopper 21 from the main body 13 of the cap and engaging its washer or gasket 24 in the seat 23 in the said stopper the same can be inserted in the mouth of the bottle B to engage in the groove C therein for tightly sealing the bottle so that it can be transported from one point to another without the accidental spilling or discharge of the contents therefrom. When the stopper 21 is used in this manner the remaining parts of the cap are dispensed with.
The lever or handle 15 is formed with a pointed free end 25 which is designed for use as an extracting spur in orderthat the usual sealing wafer or cap for the bottle may be removed prior to the association of the detachable cap therewith as hereinbefore ilescribed.
In Figs. 5 and 6 there is shown a slight modification of the invention wherein the clip 26 is formed medially thereof with spaced parallel out-turned bearing ears 27 which are cut from the said clip and have passed therethrough a pivot pin 28 which is engaged in the cars 29 on the lever 30 which, similar to the lever 15, is integral with the body 13 of the cap for pivotally connecting the said lever 30 with the clip 26 thereof."
In Fig. 7 of the drawing the stopper 21 is shown separated from the cap and used for sealing the bottle, while in Figs. 1 and 2 the use of the cap is shown with the stopper 21 a part thereof.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and manner of use of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
