UNITED sreras OFFICE.
RICHARD BOVTIE srngns, or SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, assreuon or ONE-HALF 'ro TOM COFFIS, or sen raancrsco, CALIFORNIA.
COMBINATION MILK-BOTTLE OPENER AND COVER.
Application filed February 24, 1925.
The present invention relates to improvements in milk bottle openers and contemplates the disclosure of an opener of this character that is constructed to take the place of the cover of the milk bottle after the latter has been removed.
It is proposed to construct a milk bottle opener in such a manner that the operating element for the same is made cup-shaped and of a form to fit into the neck opening of the bottle so as to furnish a cover for the same.
It is further proposed to construct the milk bottle opener in such a manner that a piercing element is provided in operative and fixed relation to the cup-shaped element irsuch a manner that the forefinger may be used to encircle the cup-shaped element and to force the piercing member into the cover and toward the thumb resting on the outside of the neck of the bottle and bearing against the bead usually provided at the top end of milk bottles.
Further objects and advantages of my device will appear as the specification proceeds.
The preferred form .of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows my opener serving as a cap or closure for the milk bottle.
Figure 2 a top plan view of the same arrangement.
Figure 3 a vertical section through the same taken along line ZHIH of Figure Figure i a vertical section taken at right angles thereto, and
Figure 5 a partially sectional view illustrating the use of my device as an opener for the bottle.
While I have shown only the preferred form of the invention, it should be under stood that various changes or modifications may be made within the scope of the claim hereto attached without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The milk bottle 1 which is of conventional form and of which only the upper portion is shown in the drawings is provided with an annular head 2 at its upper end and with an internal seat 3 adapted to receive Serial No. 11,273.
the cover 4 which latter is usually made of a piece of cardboard fitting tightly on the seat 8.
My opener comprises a cup-shaped element 6 consisting of a base 7 and an annular flange 8 fitting in the neck opening of the bottle, the flange preferably flaring outwardly so that it may lie on the upper edge of the bottle, as shown at 9. The flange is provided with two projections 0r ears 11 extending from the periphery of the flange at diametrically opposite points and describing with the adjacent flanged portion a curve causing the extreme ends of the two cars to return to and preferably slightly extend beyond the plane of the base 7 of the cup. From the point of juncture of one of these ears with the flange a sharp toot-h 12 slants so as to point toward the extended center line of the cup 6, the tooth being preferably formed by being pressed out of the material of the flange as shown at 13.
The cup-shaped element 6 is formed so that it may be conveniently gripped by the forefinger of the hand encircling the flange of the cup with the front end of the finger disposed near the ear 11 having the tooth 12 associated therewith in such a manner that the extreme end of the ear 11 bears on the first knuckle of the finger adjacent the nail thereof. hen held in that position the tooth 12 may be easily forced into the material of the cover 4 when the thumb "ears on the outside of the neck of the bottle, preferably on the bead 2 while the middle finger rests on the base 7 of the cup.
It will be seen that once the tooth 12 is introduced in the manner shown in Figure 5, the cover 4 may be easily drawn away from its seat by a kind of a scooping action. After the cover has been removed, the cup used as a handle for operating the tooth 12 may be inverted and placed over the bottle opening in the manner illustrated in F igures 1 to 4, whereby the ears ll serve to hold the cup in place.
I claim:
An opener for a milk bottle having a cover seated in the opening thereof comprising a cup-shaped operating element adapted to have its flange gripped by the forefinger 0f the operator While the middlefinger bears on the base of the element, an ear extending from the flange curved upon itself to cause its end to return to the gripping forefinger, and a piercing element pressed out of the ear at its curve and point-- ing toward the extended center line of the cap so as to allow the forefinger to cooperate With the thumb resting on the neck of the bottle in pushing the piercing element into the cover.
