COMBINED STOPPER AND FILLER FOR BOTTLES.
No; 531,135 Patented Dec. 18, 1-894 gull llm "e WITNESSES: 5'4; INVENTOR BY WATTY.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE..
ISAAC POMEROY, OE NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED STOPPER AND FILLER FOR BQTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Lettrs'Patent' No. 531,133, dated December 18, 1894. Q
* v Applicationfiled October 6,],894- Serial No. 525,087. (No model.)
To all whom it mag concern.
sey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Stopper for Bottles and Filler; andI do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact de-;
scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and] to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in a combined stopper for bottles and filler connected therewith, and is adapted to serve, first, as a stopper for bottles containing ink orother liquid, and second, as a filling device for withdrawing'the liquid from the bottle by suction intoatube and by pressure ejecting the liquid from the tube.
A further object of the invention is to pro vide a device forthe purposes stated in the above, having its compressible bulb or air reservoir, protected with a shield or shell, having an opening or openings therein, to permit the insertion of the finger, or finger and thumb, and to exert a pressure uponthe compressible bulb connected with the filler.
- The invention therefore consists of the novel arrangements and combinations of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and finally embodied in the clauses of the claims.
Theinvention is illustrated in the'accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of the combined bottle-stopper and filler, illustrating the same in position in abottle, the latter being represented in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a side view of the combined bottle-stopper and filler, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 4 is a side view of a combined bottle stopper and filler, provided with a protecting shield of a modified form of construction. Fig. 5 is a side view, and Fig. 6 a vertical section of a bottle stopper and filler of a slightly modified form of construction.
Similar letters of reference are employed'in well-known material, which -fits in the neck of the bottle I) in the usual manner. -In a central perforation in said stopper 0. is arranged a drop tube 0 having a pointed end 0 provided with a small perforation or opening in the end. Said tube is preferably provided with an annular flange c at'the top, over which is sprung a compressible bulb d, of rubber or other like material, which, when compressed, draws the liquid in the bottle, by suction into the tube, 0, or ejects the liquid from said tube as may be desired. Said tube c may be provided with graduations to regulate the amount of liquid to be forced into the same by suction or to be ejected from the tube.
, As will be seen from the several figures of the drawings, I arrange upon the stopper a, a suitable cap or shell e, of metal, plastic material or enameled or varnished wood, or other suitable material, which forms a protector for the rubber bulb d, and protects the same from undue collapse, compression or doubling over, or against anyother injury. Said cap or shield e, as will be more especially seen from Fig. 3, is recessed, as at e, and fits upon the stoppera as shown, being firmly forced. down upon the same and cemented thereto, as will be understood. Said shield is provided with an ornamental enlargement c and preferably with the hexagonal sides e ,to give sufficient purchase when it is de-. sired to remove the device from the neck of the bottle. The shell is provided in the one side with an opening e for the insertion of.
the finger to permit of the bulb or voir (1 being compressed.
As will be seen from Fig. 4, the shell, 6, may
air reser- 'be provided with an oppositely placed opening a. In using this device the finger is inserted into one opening and the thumb into the other opening to permit the bulb d to be sufficiently compressed.
In some cases I- may dispense with the use of a separate stopper a, the rubber bulb d being formed with a downwardly and slightly inclined portion (1' which forms a stopper for the bottle, as will be seen from Fig. 6. In this construction the lower edge e of the shell e is turned over and under an ofi set d on the portion d, substantially as illustrated. Although this construction answers the purposes for Which my invention is intended, still the forms illustrated in Figs. 1 to t inclusive are the preferred forms of construction.
The several features in the above described invention are of considerable importance, as by the use of the combined stopper and filler provided with the protecting shield it produces a cheaply constructed and efticient'device for the purposes herein set forth, and all danger of doubling over and collapse, or j amming the rubber bulb in packing or when in use, is successfully overcome. Said shield also serves as a protector to prevent the sticking together of the bulb, as will be clearly evident.
The device is especially adapted for use as a combined stopper and filler for bottles con.- taining inks for use in fountain pens, but may be used in connection with bottles, or other vessels, containing liquids of any kind.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A combined stopper and liquid filler, comprising therein, in combination, with a filling tube and a compressible bulb arranged thereon, a non-compressible shield arranged over said bulb and having an opening or openings therein, for the insertion of the finger, or finger and thumb, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A combined stopper and liquid filler, comprising therein, in combination, a perforated stopper, as a, for a bottle, a filling tube in said stopper, a compressible bulb on said tube, and a non-compressible shield arranged over said bulb and having an opening or openings therein, for the insertion of the finger, or finger and thumb, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. A combined stopper and liquid filler, comprising therein, in combination, a perforated stopper a, for a bottle, a filling tube 0, a compressible bulb d on said tube, and a non-compressible shield e, over said bulb, said shield having a recess e in which the upper portion of the stopper a is fitted and secured, and an opening or openings in said shield for the insertion of the finger, or finger and thumb, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the invention set forth above I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of September, 1894.
ISAAC POMEROY.
