To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, XIARRY VJ. JoNns, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Disintegrator Sifter Tops, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates in general to sifter top cans and has for its object broadly the provision of new and improved construction in cans having tops of this character wherein sifter openings are provided by the ma nipulation by the user of the material of-the can and without providing any separate member or members for the closing of the perforations or sifter openings. D

A principal object of the present invention is the provision of a construction in which the sifter openings will be tightly closed when the can is received by the user and which will permit of the establishment of sifter conditions by the user and through the exertion of a lightly applied pressure to the can wall or end. The invention contemplates in this respect a construction wherein the sifter openings may be provided by the user through and as a result of pressure exerted by his hand upon an appropriate portion of the can end.

Another principal object of the invention is in providing sifter openings in a can top that are produced upon the expanded metal principle and I have found that in slitting the metal in concentric circles to produce an expanded metal efiect when opened that the slit portions can be pressed back into posltion and given a sufficiently tight joint to hold ordinary powdered materials.

Another important object of the invention is the provision of a disintegrator extending inwardly of the can from the sifter end.

Another important object of the invention is the provision of a can having these and other advantages which will not require the provision of additional parts or additional material and which will be cheap to manufacture and of distinctive and pleasing appearance.

Numerous other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, when taken in con- 1920. Serial No. 388,537.

Figure 1 is a top plan view of a can embodying my invention;

Fig. is a section through the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1 and showing the arrangement before the can end is pressed by the user to provide the sifter openings; and

Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing the arrangement after the sifter openings are provided.

F or the purpose of illustrating my inven tion I have shown on the drawing a can comprising a body 10 having a cover 11 seamed or otherwise secured to the body at 12.

The cover or end wall 11 is provided with a number of series of lines of severance 13. The members of each series are arranged in circular formation and the several series are concentric. The adjacent ends of members of each series are staggered with relation to the adjacent ends of members of adjacent series, leaving staggered parts 14 which are not to be broken away when the sifter openings are provided, as will be presently described. At the center of the slits a part 15 is provided which is adapted to be pressed the user to provide the sifter openings. The slits are provided by cutting the material along the lines of severance and returning it to its normal or original position thereafter, this normal or original position being in the present instance in the plane of the body of the end.

When the central part 15 is pressed, opening occurs along the lines of severance, the result being an expanded metal portion providing sifter openings 16 and extending into the can to provide also a disintegrator adapted to break up lumpy contents in the package.

It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be apparent fr m the foregoing, without further description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
