UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J HAUOK, JR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SHEET-METAL Box.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,378, dated April 22, 1890.
Application filed January 30,1890. Serial No. 888,557. (No model.)
T0 on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. HAUOK, J12, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a box the body of which is made of a single piece of sheet metal and provided with double sides and with flanges formed on its front and made to overlap its back. lVith the rectangular body of the box is combined a hinged cover provided with elastic ears which are constructed to hug the sides of the box, so as to retain the cover in its closed position.
In the accompanyin g drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view of the blank from which the body of my box is formed. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the different stages through which the blank passes in order to complete the body of the box. Fig. 6 is a face view of the box when the cover is partly raised. Fig. 7 is a horizontal section in the plane an m, Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a transverse vertical section in the plane y 3 Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a vertical section in the plane 2' .2, Fig. 8. Fig. 10 is a face View of the blank from which the cover is formed.
' In the drawings, the letter A designates the blank from which the body of my box is made. The section a between the dotted lines 10 and 11 forms the bottom of the body. The section 1) between the dotted tlines 12 and 13 forms the back. The sections 0 coutside of the dotted lines 12 and 13, respectively, form the inner portions of the duplex sides. The section (Z between the dotted lines 14. and 15 forms the front. The sections e a between the dotted lines 14: and 16 and 15 and 17, respectively, form the outer portions of the duplex sides, and the sections ff outside of the lines 16 and 17 form the overlapping flanges. The blank A is then bent successively in the lines 12 la and 13 15 then in the lines 10 11, and then in the lines 16 17 to the forms shown in Figs. 2 to 5, and those portions of the sides e e which extend slightly beyond the line 11, Fig. 1, are bent inward toward the bottom, so as to render the box tight. By referring to Fig. 7 it will be seen that each of the sides of the body is composed of a section 0 and a section e, and in order to render the body strong and durable the sections fare bent over the back of the box. (See Figs. 5 and "7.)
After the body of the box has been completed the tongueextension g 011 the top edge of the back i) is convoluted or rolled to form an eye corresponding to the eyes of the cover B, so that by passing a wire through said eyes a hinge-joint is formed between the cover and the body. In the top edge of the front (I of the body is formed a finger-opening h.
The cover B is formed of a blank such as shown in Fig. 10. The section i of this blank forms the top of the cover, and it is provided with extensions t" i to form the eyes for the hinge-joint. The section j forms the front and the sections 7c 7:; form elastic ears which hug the body of the box when the cover is closed, and which serve to retain said cover in its closed position. The top edges of the outer side sections 6 e are rounded or beveled off (see Fig. 9) to enable the cars 7a to snap over the sides of the body.
lVhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A box consisting of a rectangular body having the front provided with a finger-opening in its top edge and the back formed with a convoluted tongue-extension, and the lid or cover hinged to said. extension and comprising the section 1', to form the box-top, the section 3' at an angle thereto to overlie the front finger-opening, and the elastic side ears k, to clasp the upper ends of the box-sides, substantially as described.
2. A sheet-metal box consisting of a body comprising duplex sides, flanges f, formed on the front cl and overlying the back I), a convoluted tongue-extension g on the top edge of the said back, and a finger-opening h in the top edge of the said front, and the lid or cover B, hinged to the tongue-extension and comprising the section 2', to form the box-top, the section j at an angle thereto to overlie the finger-opening, and the elastic ears on the latter section to clasp the upper ends of the duplex sides, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I haveherennto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
