ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS II. IIORWITZ, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CIGAR-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,009, dated July 16, 1889.
Application filed April 17, 1889. Serial No. 307,559. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ULIUS II. Ilonwrrz, of the city, county, and State of New York, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cigarbox in which the cigars are exposed in an attractive and convenient manner on opening the lid, and in which cigars from the lower layers can be removed without first removing the upper or top layer; and the invention consists of a cigar-box the body of which is formed of two partsna1nely, an outer part, which is open at the front, and an inner part, which is open at the rear, the latter being guided by pins at its lower front corners in guide-slots of the side walls of the outer body and connected by pivot-straps with a lid hinged on the outer part, so that on opening the lid the inner body containing the cigars is moved into inclined position, so as to exhibit the cigars more advantageously.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improved cigar-box, showing the same in open position.
Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical transverse sections of the same, showing the same respectively in closed and open position; and Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A and A represent the outer and inner sections, which together form the improved cigar-box. The outer section A is open at the front end, while the inner section A is open at the rear end and provided with rounded-off rear top cor- 11ers. The inner section A is guided by means of pivots a in the slots a of the side walls of the outer section A, so that the inner section can be moved into inclined position within the outer section for the purpose of exhibiting the cigars supported on the inner section in a more advantageous and attractive The slots of the side walls of the outer section A are re-enforced by means of slotted sheet-metal plates a which impart a more finished appearance to the box. The lid B is connected with the side walls of the inner section A by means of pivoted straps C, which straps serve for the purpose of lifting the inner section into said inclined position when the lid is opened, as shown in Fig. 3. On closing the lid the inner section A is moved in the guide-slots a of the side Walls of the outer section Ainto its normal position in the box, as shown in Fig. 2.
A cigar-box of the described construction has the advantage that the cigars can be exhibited in a more attractive manner when handing the same around or when exhibiting the same in a show-case; secondly, that the same can be taken hold of with greater facility by lifting them at the uncovered end, and, lastly, that cigars from the intermediate layers can be removed without first removing the top layer. I
IIavin g thus described lny invention, I claim as new and d esire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cigar-box the body of which is formed of an outer section open at the front and of an inner section open at the rear end, the inner section being pivoted by corner pins in guide-slots in the outer section, a hinged lid on the outer section, and pivoted straps connecting the lid with the side walls of the inner section, substantially as set forth.
2. A cigar-box the body of which is composed of an outer section open at the front end and an inner section open at the rear end, said inner section being guided by pivot-pins at its lower corners in guide-slots of the side walls of the outer section, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presonce of two subscribing witnesses.
