ATENT IMPROVEMENT IN ClGAR-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 187,530, dated February 20, 1877; application filed January 13, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, FERDINAND HAssEL- BACH and ERNST HASSELBACH, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved GiganBoX, of which the following is a specification In, the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improved cigarbox, and Fig. 2 a detail top vicw of a corner of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The invention relates to such an improvement in the cigar-boxes with hinged front sections that the lateral sides are retained rigidly in position when the cigars are packed and pressed into the boxes; and the invention consists of a cigar-box with hinged front part, which is connected to the sides by pivoted clasps fitting into recesses of the front part for locking the same, and strengthening the sides against spreading in lateral direction.
In the drawing, A` represents a cigarbox with a hinged'front side or section, B, that swings down to expose the ends of the cigars to View when exhibited for sale.
The sides O of the box A are connected by clasps D, pivoted near the upper front corners of the same to the frontsection B by entering recesses or slits c of the same, for retaining the front section rigidly in closed position. The clasp D is made oi' one strip of metal, that is bent into oblong shape, with ends ex tended at one corner into the direction of one of Athe smaller sides of the oblong. These ends are pivoted to the outside ot' the side walls C, so that the oblong part of the clasp swings up or down to release or lock the front section. The front corners of the sides C are slightly rounded oli` at b, to admit the free swinging of the clasps, the face or front part-- ot' the corner being also slightly recessed, if desired, to provide for the band of the clasp, and produce the perfect fitting of the front section when in closed position. The clasps admit the convenient swinging down of the front section when opening the box, while retaining the same firmly in closed position when seated inthe recesses of the front, so
'as to prevent effectively the spreading of the sides by the packing and pressing' of the cigars into the box. The front section `may at any time be opened or closed without weakening the box or detracting in the least fromV its appearance. v
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. As an improvement in cigar-boxes, the combination of hinged front section or wall B of a cigar-box with the side walls C, provided with pivoted oblong clasps D near the front corners, locking into recesses of the front wall, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 1
2. In a cigar-box, the combination of the side walls O, having rounded-0E front corners, with the pivoted clasps D, swinging front B, and hinged top lid, as and for the purpose set forth.
FERDINAND HASSELBAOH. ERNST- HASSELBAGH.
