To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MICHAEL KOENIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Purses or Bags, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to purses and similar articles; and it consists in certain novel devices and combinations, which are described and pointed out in the following specification and claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved purse, both the inner and outer lids being shown ajar. Fig. 2 is atop view of the purse, its outer lid being thrown open, thereby showing its first compartment or receptacle. Fig. is a top view taken when its inner lid has been thrown open, showing its second compartment or receptacle. Fig. at is a detail side view of the inlay of the frame of the purse. Fig. 5 is an under side view of the frame. Fig. 7 is a section along y y, Fig. 5.

The letterA designates the bag of the purse, whose edge is secured to the inlay 13 of the frame by means of flanges O formed thereon, under which flanges the edge of the bag is inserted and clamped, as is shown in Fig. (l. The flanges O are also seen in Fig. 4. After the flanges O are bent down, so as to clamp the edge of the bag, the trough-shaped ringframe D is set upon the inlay B, and is secured thereto by its flanges E.

Upon the rear upper surface of the frame D, l have provided ears F, which support a pintle G, on which both the inner and the outer lids H and I of the purse are hinged, the in ner lid being hooked on the pintle by its hinge-hook J, and the outer lid by its hingehooks K K, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The trough-shaped ring-frame D is provided with a sliding spring-catch L, having a fingerpiece lil extending through such frame and adapted to be pressed inward for the purpose of releasing the inner lid-ll. On closing and pressing down the inner lid, a hasp N, which projects from the front edge of said lid, enters an opening 0,1nade in the frame, and engages the catch L, and the said lid is thereby locked.

The inner lid has a sunken or tray-shaped bottom P, which is of such form and size as will allow it to pass down within the trough-shaped ring-frame, as shown in the drawings, and especially in Fig. 6. This construction enables the mouth of the bag A to become securely closed by the inner lid when the latter is shut down, and consequently money or other articles contained in the bag are prevented from passing up and working their way out of the bag by accident or when the purse is turned upside down. Furthermore, the sunken bot tom of the inner lid forms on the upper surface of said inner lid a receptacle Q,in which may be placed postage-stamps, railroad-tickets, or other small articles, and which are retained therein securely by means of the outer lid, which, as heretofore explained, swings on a hinge or joint, so as to readily open and close.

The outer lid has a hasp R, which when the lid is closed is engaged by an eye S, mounted on a spring T, and which is operated by a finger-piece U when the outer lid is to be released.

The invention is applicable to a variety of objects, such as purses, tobacco-pouches, bags, and other articles.

The catch L is shown provided with an actuating-spring V,which is laid into a groove in the catch-body, so that one orboth ends of the spring project and brace themselves against the frame. The spring is lieldin the groove in the catch by hammering or flattening the sides of the groove againstthe spring to clamp the latter.

lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with a bag havinga ringframe at one end, of a sliding notched catch having a projecting finger-piece and arranged to move in the frame,'and a spring having its extremities bearing against the frame and between such extremities engaging the notch in the sliding catch, substantially as described.
