THOMAS SAYERS, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
HOLDER FOR CIGARETTES, CIGARS, VESTAS, CARDS,OR THE LIKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 647,582, dated April 17, 1900. Application filed December 11, 1899. Eicrial No. 740,004. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS SAYERS, of 19 \Vharton road, W'est Kensington Park, London, England, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented an Improved Holder for Cigarettes, Cigars, Vestas, Cards, or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention for an improved holder for cigarettes, cigars, vestas, cards, and the like has for its object to provide a holder in which the contents can be very readily removed therefrom one at a time and which can be very easily opened, thus doing away with the disadvantages of the ordinary cases, in which, when they are full, there is often considerable difficulty in removing one article at a time.
The case employed is of the class which opens on a hinge along one edge, and a central portion adapted for containing the cigarettes or other articles is fitted loosely within the case, being attached thereto at each side by links, wires, or other attaching devices. It will therefore be seen that when the case is opened the container is suspended by the links, wires, or other attaching devices and is lifted, so that the cigarettes or the like are caused to protrude beyond the casing. 0n closing the case the container drops, so that it fits within the case.
A spring or other easily-operated fastening is provided, so that the case can be readily unfastened and will fasten itself when closed, and when a cigarette is required, in the case of a cigarette-case, it is easy to unfasten the case by means of the hand holding it, and the cigarette can then be extracted with the lips.
In order to increase the capacity, the container is adapted to hold two or more rows of articles arranged at different levels, so that each row can be got at separately.
In order that this invention may be more clearly described, reference is had to the accompanying sheet of illustrative drawings, on which- Figure 1 is an elevation of a cigarette-case constructed according to this invention in the open position. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same in the open position. Fig. 3 is a plan in the closed position. Fig. 4. is an elevation of a similar device adapted for cards.
The two portions A A of the case are hinged together at a with a spring-hinge, by which when released the two portions will tend to open out. A cap A is provided, which will engage with a spring-catch, whereby the two portions A A of the case will be secured when the case is closed. The container B for the cigarettes or other articles is connected to the two portions A A of the case by means of the links 0 C. These links in the example shown extend for the full width of the container B and are preferably of some material of a fairly rigid natu re. These links may be covered with ornamental Work in order to enhance the appearance of the device. Instead of these links two or more wires may be used at each side to serve their purpose. It will therefore be seen that when the case is opened the links 0 G will be moved outwardly, and the result will be that the container B will be lifted, so that its contents will protrude beyond the case, and the contents of the container B can therefore be very easily extracted. On closing the case together the container 13 drops again into position within the case. The spring-fastening will then secure the lid A and the Whole will then be retained in the closed position.
To further facilitate the extraction of an article from the case, such as a cigarette, the container B is constructed so that it Will hold two or more rows, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. The bottom of the container B is stopped, so that one row of cigarettes is at a higher level than the other and will protrude farther. At times When it is not convenient to use both hands for the extraction of a cigar ette it will be possible to extract a cigarette by means of the lips, While the opening and closing of the case can be easily performed with one hand. In Fig. 4 a similar device is shown adapted for cards. The construction is substantially the same; but the bottom of the container B is inclined instead of bein stepped, so that the cards will project slightly one beyond another, and they can therefore be easily extracted one at a time.
The case may be of any suitable materiabsuch as sheet metal, leather with metal frame, cardboard, or the like-and may be orna mented as desired.
\Vhat I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An improved holder for cigarettes, cigars vestas, cards and the like com-prising a case in two portionshavin g a spring-hinge between them, and a container secured to each portion of the case by links substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
2. An improved holder for cigarettes, cigars vestas, cards and the like comprising a case in two portions connected together by a sp ri nghinge, a container, links connecting said container to each portion of the case and a hinged lid which secures the case in a closed position substantially as set forth and for the purposes specified.
3. An improved holder for cigarettes, cigars
