' shipping, and storage are capable of lying flat,
and which when to be used may be folded up into rectangular or other form adapted to form a receptacle for containing the article or articles or material to be inclosed thereby. The improvements constituting the present invention, however, are particularly applicable to thatelass of boxes known as slide-boxes? wherein a trouglrlike receptacle is "enveloped by a tubular open-ended cover, in which the receptacle may slide and be extended from either end of the cover to expose its contents. The invention consists, essentially, in pro-'- viding the blank from which the t'rougltlike receptacle is formed with an extended end portion, in one piece therewith, cut and scored to form, when the receptacle is folded up into 7 rectangular form ,an end co'nipartuicnt adapted spect to its cover.
toseparate the contents of the receptacle and compartment from each other.
Italso cousistsin a trough-like receptacle provided with an end compartment forming a solid end tothe receptacle, and iuother more specific constructions hereinafter more fully set forth. l v f In the drawings, Figure 1. illustrates a blank from which the trough or slide portion of the box is made. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hlank partially folded into rectangular form. Fig, 3 is a longitudinal section of the trough'or slide portion of the box, and Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the same. Figs. 5and 6 are perspective views of the trough or slide portion of the box and its tubular cover, the slide portion in different positions with re- Fig. 7 is a central lo'ng'itudinal'section or" the slide portion of the box I and its tubular cover, showing the slide portionin the position shown in Fig. 6. ififh, view of a modified form of the blank and a perspective view ofthe trough or slide formed thereby.
In a practical embodiment of this invention a blank is cut, creased or scored, and incised, as seen in lig..1,whcreby is provided abottom, M, formed by the creased orscored lines 2 3aud 4 5, and sides UEN, find-having atone end an end tions 0 P Q, formed by the creased lines d, 7, and S,which po tions() 1 Q form the end compartment, hereinafter referred to. At-thc opposite end of the bottom M the blank is provided the creased lines Sand 9. The blank is furthermore provided withincisionslt) f2 on the lines 2 and 3, to form corner-pieces l( L, free from the end piece, S, on ,the' end of the sides II N, and with incisions, 13 14 at the opposite end a creased line, 15, across the bottom M, to form a hinged bottom portion, 1, free from the s des creasing and incisions which permit the sevcral portionslbcrcof to be bent or folded upon each other to form the trough or slide,- in the manner hereinafter set forth, may be produced by any of the well-known dies, or it maybe shade by hand or by any other method found desirable in practice. Thcblank formed in eitherofthcse ways may l cronverted into trough or slide form in the following manner: The sides U audN are bent up at right angle to the bot tom M on their respect-ive creased lines 2 and 3, as in Fig. 2,- simultancously bcndingup the corner-pieces K and I} in line therewilh, which are then bent at right illiglOS to their respective sides, so as to extend toward each other, as shown. The end piece, S, is now bent up on tho-creased line i at right angles to the bottom, so as to lie against the corucrpieccs K and l). The portion 0 is bent downward on the creased line 6,
said corner-pieces between the sidcsU and N,& and thus bringthe portion 1., which is bent on the creased line 7 at right angles to the portion '0, into contact with and upon the bottom M, as in Fig. I from which the port-ion Q is bent up at right angles on the creased line parallel with the portion O of the portions 0 P Q within the trough or slide structure forms a compartment, -D, bounded by the .end of the structure, the portion Q,:and the sides U and N,and separated with an end; B, and closin'grtlap Ct formed by ot' the blank ongsaidcreascd lil es 2 3, and with so as toinclose and lie upon theitmersideot This disposition,
piece,S, formed by the creased lines 4 6,and por- I U N. A blank thus provided with linesof" portion Q. Of course the extent or width of this compartment D may be changed to suit the exigencies of its use by varying the width of the bottom-forming portion 1, and the said compartment may be partially opened to the remainder of the structure by decreasing the height of the partition forming'portion Q; but this will be seldom resortedto. posite portions,0 Q,and the intermediate portion, P, forming the end compartment, D, are formed byan extension of the same portion of the blank that forms one of the sides or ends, as S, of the body of the completed box. To close the opposite end of the slide, the end B will bcbent up at right angles to the bottom M on the creased line 5, and the closing-flap C will be bent at right angles thereto on the creased line 9, so as to extend toward the interiorof thestructurein a manner .well known. The slide thus bent into shape is slipped into a tubular cover, A, ofsnfif cient length to inclose the slitle and form a cover for'its open top and for its compartment D.
In the practical use of the box thus com-' pleted the slide is adapted to be projected from either end of its tubular cover,so as to uncover and expose its compartment 1) at one end, as in Fig. 5, or to expose its other end by freeing the closing-flap (3 and permitting its end B to fall or be turned away from the end of the slide, and by reason of the incisions 13 it be still further bent away to open the portion I of the bottotmand thus entirely open the end of the slide, as in Fig. 6, so as to expose the ends of the articles it contains and permit them to be readily withdrawn. This desirable opening feature of the closing end of the slide per se is not, however, herein claimed, as the same is patented to one 'iheodore Marbnrg, January 8, 1984.
In the structureillustrated there is provided means by which when the slide portion of the boxis moved out into the position shown in .Fig. 6 the closing end thereof will be automatically opened, so as to expose the interior of the box. This is effected by providing a tlcxi blc strip of material, JO-such as rubbcrand secured at each of its ends when under tcnsion, one to about the center of the portion 1. and the other to the bottom itself, at some short distance removed from the hinge ofsaid portion 1, as seen in Fig. 2. Thus when the slide portion of theho.\' is extended beyond thc'tubnlar cover, as in Figs. (3 and 7, so as to free the [lap t, the llexihle strip of material. 20, will draw upon the portion I and cause it and the portion it and tlap G to draw away from the end of the slide portion and expose its interior.
Thus the op So far as the slide is concerned, provided with the'cnd compartment, 1), the closing-flap C may be omitted entircly-as, for instance, in the example shown in Fig. 8. The blank in this case is provided with corner-pieces K L and with end portions, S 0', similar in all respects to the corner-pieces K and Land end portions, Sand 0, on the opposite end of the blank, the end being secured by enveloping the corner-pieces K L by the end portions, S and O, in the same man ner, providing a solid end to the slide. So, too, instead of providing an end-closing flap having the hinged bottom portion, I, such bot-tom portion may be omitted. I
It may he remarked in passing that the portions S and 0 may be secured together and to the corner-pieccs K L by cement, if desired. It may also be observed that in packing the "blanks made in accordance with this invention for storage or shipment the compartment portions 0 P Q, may be folded over tlat' onto the bottom on the creased line 6, and thus not make the package of any larger dimensions than usual.
\Vhat 1 claim is- 1. A blank for slide boxes for tubular covers, consisting of the bottom portion, the two side portions, a closing-flap at one end, and at the opposite end portions 5, O, P, and Q, substantially as described.
if. A box having, a transverse end compartment, the opposite and one iiitermediate portions of which are formed by the folds of the same portion of the blank that forms one side of the body of the box, substantially as described.
3. A box provided with an end permanently olosedby an extension ot the blank, also folded to form a transverse partition, Q,substantially described.
4. A slide-box for tubular covers, provided with an end portion having portions P and Q, forming an end compartment within the slidebox, substantially as described.
5. Aslide-box blank for tubular covers, pro-.
vidcd with corner-pieces K L, end portion, S,
and portions 0 P Q, substantially as described.
6. A slide box blank consisting of a bottom, two sides, end portions, S O P Q, at one side of the bottom, and of portions I it and flap C at the opposite side of the bottom, substantially as described. v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
