To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, AARON MnNDnLsoN and SHEPARD J. GOLDBERG, citizens of the United States, and residentsV of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigarette-Box, of which the .following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention has relation to improvements in boxes for holding cigarettes, cigars and articles of relatively similar shape and slightly varying in size so as to conveniently remove one of the same from the box without touching or handling the others or injuring the same.

This invention has for a most specic and further object the provision of a box in which a plurality of holders are commonly connected so as to move into spaced relation when their carrying sections are moved outwardly, there being provided in the present instance the box having acentral anchoring member and a pair of oppositely moving holding sections.

With the above and other `objects in view, the invention resides more particularly in the peculiar combination and arrange-ment of parts which will be illustrated as a preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawings and described in the specilication.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cigarette box with the holding sections open or moved outwardly; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the box with one of the sections in a closed position and the other section in an open position to show the manner of spacing the cigarettes for removing the same; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view through one of the holders and the strip to which it is attached, to more clearly illustrate the construction of the holders. In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the box is made of a blank section re-bent at right angles at spaced points as shown at 5 to provide a top edge 6, a back 7 and a front 8, the same providing a box body or compartment which is open at its sides and bottom while the front 8 forms a flap designed to be freely raised and lowered along its folded edge.

Secured to the edge portion 6 and the back 7 vertically and centrally is a division wall or strip 9, preferably of heavy cardboard or wood, while pivoted or hinged as shown at 10 to the lower end of this division wall are a pair of oppositely movable carrying sections 11.V Each of the carrying sect-ions forms a compartment and, as shown, is closed at its bottom or outer edges 12 and 13 and its opposed side portions 14 have their free edges curved to freely enter the body of the box and permit the cigarettes to be exposed in a manner to be hereinafter described.

Also connected to the division wall 9 or to the bottom portions 12 which are formed of a continuous strip, is a flexible and partially collapsible supporting strip 15, the same being `attached as shown at 16 to the outer edge 13 of each carrying section spaced from the bottom portion thereof. Substantially U-shaped members having opposed pairs of relatively rigid strips of cardboard sections 17, formed from single sections rebent are connected to the supporting strips 15g so that when the cigarettes 18 are mounted between the strips 17 within the pockets formed by said strips and tubular holders 19 encircling the strips, the cigarettes will lie in stepped relation when the sections are closed in the manner indicated at the left hand. side of Fig. 2 of the drawings. The holders L9 which encircle or inclose the strip 17 at the sides of the pockets, are preferably constructed of oiled paper and being transparent show continuous with the strips as illustrated by the drawings. These holders are connected to the strips as by pasting the same thereto.

It will also be observed that the supporting strips 15 will be similarly disposed when the cigarettes are in the last named position, but in order to cause the cigarettes to move into spaced relation and into alinement, if desired, Vwhen the sections are opened, so as to conveniently remove each without touching or mutilating the others, the holders 19 and strips 17 are connected by opposed web sections 20, and the ends of such web sections are connected to the division wall 9 and to the edge portions 13 of the carrying sections with suiiicient parts of the web sections between the holders, as shown at 21, to permit the holders to move into spaced relation or together, depending upon whether the sections are in a closed or in an open position.

It will be observed that the sections are designed tomove outwardly but that they will be supported by the web sections and spaced apart when so moved, but the web sections and holders will move together when the carrying sections are moved into the box body.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In an article holding box of the class described, the combination with a box body having an open edge; of a section movable into and out of the same, independent holders carried by the sections and means to cause the holders to move one relative to the other and into spaced relation when the section is moved out of the body.

2. In an article holding box of the class described, the combination with a box body;

In an article holding box of the class described, the combination with a box body; of a section movable into and out of the same, independent holders carried by the section, and means anchored to the box body, section and holders to cause said holders to move into substantially divergent relation when the section is moved out of the body and in closed relation when the section is moved into the box body.
