UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE O. VARVIG, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRAVELING, TOILET, OR OTHER CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,740, dated April 1, 1890.
Application filed March 18, 1889. Serial No. 303,680. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. VARWIG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Traveling, Toilet, Jewel, Medicine, or other Cases, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a case formed of compartments connected in such manner that either of them maybe uncovered or a portion or all of them folded in compact form, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and. claimed.
Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of a case embodying my invention, the parts thereof being in different positions. Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views thereof, the parts being in different positions from those shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and having their coverings and linings removed.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a tray formed in the present case of four compartments 1 2 3 4c. The compartments 1 and 2 are connected by hinges 5. The compartment 1 is connected with the compartment 3 by hinges 6. The compartmenti? is connected with the compartment 4 by hinges 7. The compartments 3 and 4 are not directly connected, their contiguous sides 8 9 being separated.
It will be seen that the compartments may be folded one upon the other, as will be seen in Fig. 1, the case thus being in compact form, convenient for location on a dressing bureau, table, &c., or may be readily placed in atrunk, stored, and transported, the case as closed preventing dust from entering the same. The case may, however, be opened and the compartment exposed or uncovered by turning the same in proper direct-ion, the preliminary step being shown in Fig. 2, after which the compartments may be disposed in the positions shown in Figs. 3 and l or other positions, according to the manner of manipulating the compartments relatively to the hinges thereof, so that one, more, or all of the compartments may be presented or uncovered and access to the same had for placing articles therein or removing the contents thereof, as may be.
The compartments are represented of the form of quadrants; but to this I do not limit myself, as their shape may be quadrilateral, triangular, 820., without producing different results, except in appearance or design.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A case consisting of compartments in pairs hinged together so as to fold one on top of the other, the hinged connection of the compartments to form. pairs, and the hinged connection of the pairs being on adjacent sides of the compartments, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A. case formed of compartments 1 2 3 4., the compartments 1 and 2 being hinged to each other, the compartment 1 being hinged to the compartment 3, and the compartment 2 being hinged to the compartment 4, the contiguous sides of the compartments 3 and l being disconnected, the parts being combined substantially as described.
GEORGE C. VARVIG.
