Description

H. BURGHESS.
SUITCASE.
APPLIOATION FILED APR. 17. 1913.
Patented Dec. 9, 1913,
J2 el meg.
EEEEAN BUBGHESS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SUITCASE.
Specification of Letters katent.
Patented Dmfi, rats.
Application filed April .17, 1913. Serial No. 761,655.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN BURCHESS, a former subject of the King of Roumania, who have declared my intention of becoming a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of- Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suitcases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in suit cases and has for its object the provision of an improved suit case especially adapted for the carrying of valuable papers or other articles.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be-best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view of the top portion of a suit case embodying my invention, and shownin open condition, Fig. 2, a similar view of the suit case but with portions broken away, and Fig. 3, a section taken on line ma; of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a suit case having the usual body 1 and top 2 hinged thereto. Arranged in the top 2 is a secret pocket 3 having overlapping flaps 4 and 5, said flap .4 being provided with straps 6 having snap-fasteners 7 adapted to engage similar fasteners on flap 5, said pocket being secured in the top immediately adjacent the top thereof, as indicated in Fig. 3. Short securing straps 8 are ar ranged in the top around the edges of pocket 3 and are provided with snap-fasteners 9. A sheet 10 of cardboard or other comparatively stiff material is arranged to be loosely inserted in top 2 and is provided at its rear face with a pocket 10'. On its outer face said sheet 10 is provided with overlapping flaps 11 and 12 and buckle straps 13 and 14 adapted to hold flaps 11 and 12 in closed positions. Straps 13 and 14 are also provided with snap-fasteners 15 adapted to engage with snap-fasteners 9 to hold sheet 10 and its accompanying pockets in position in the top of the suit case. A
hand strap 16 is also secured to sheet 10 centrally to facilitate removal thereof.
.In use any valuable papers or other arti cles may be placed in pocket 3 and then the sheet 10 placed over said pocket and secured in position by snap-fasteners 9. In case someone should go through the suit case with wrongful intent they would not be likely to discover the pocket 3 which is thus hidden and secret and thus papers or other vauables therein would be comparatively sa e.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from thespirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail'myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a suit case, of a pocket arranged in the top thereof; straps secured in said top around the edges of said pocket; snap-fasteners on said straps; a sheet of stifi material loosely fitting within said top; a pocket arranged on the back of said sheet; overlapping flaps on the face of said sheet; and snap-fasteners on said sheet adapted to engage those on said straps, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a suit case, of a pocket arranged in the top thereof; straps secured in said top around the edges of said pocket; snap-fasteners on said straps; a sheet of stiff material loosely fittin within said top; a pocket on the back of said sheet; overlapping flaps on the face of said sheet; buckled straps arranged to hold said flaps closed; and snap-fasteners on said buckled straps adapted to engage those on said first mentioned straps, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a suit case, of a pocket arranged in the top thereof; straps secured in said top around the edges of said pocket; snap-fasteners on said straps; a sheet of stiff material loosely fitting within said top; a pocket on the back of said sheet; overlapping flaps on the face of said sheet; buckled straps arranged to hold said name to this specification in the presence of flaps closed; sdnap-fastenersh on said biclled two subscribing witnesses. straps adapte to engage t ose on sai rst mentioned straps; and a finger strap on said HERMAN BURCHESS' 5 sheet adapted to facilitate removal thereof, Witnesses:
substantially as described. JOSHUA R. H. Form,
In testimony whereof I have signed my I B. G. RICHARDS.
