Jan. 13, 1953 s. KNEE COMBINATION WALLET AND PURSE Filed Nov. 8, 1949 nlzv II IN VEN TOR.
J/NO/V K/VFE Patented Jan. 13, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 6 Claims.
This invention relates generally to wallets and, in particular, to a combination wallet and'purse.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a wallet having a purse which is formed therein and to which access may be had without opening or unfolding the Wallet.
Another object is more generally to provide a combination wallet and purse of simplified construction.
The above and other objects, features and ad" vantages of the invention will be fully understood from the following description, considered in connection with the accompanying illustrative drawings.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side View of the wallet in folded and closed condition;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the opened wallet, the latter being in inverted position and with the top of the purse uppermost;
Fig. 3 is a sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-=S of Fig. 2; and
Fig. 5 is a view, on a reduced scale, showing leather or other suitable sheet material, said blanks being illustrated in Fig. 5 in position to be secured together.
Wall blank I2 comprises the integral outer wall forming portions l6 and I8, and the inner Wall forming portions 253 and 22 integral with said outer portions, respectively. If preferred, said outer wall portions l6 and is may be provided, on their inner surfaces, with a coextensive lining 24 formed of suitable sheet material and secured thereto in any suitable manner, for example, by gluing, said lining prcviding additional stifi'ness for said outer walls. lNallet forming blank M comprises the integral portions 25 and 28 which oppose the inner wall portions 20 and 22, respectively, and are secured thereto, at their outer marginal edges, by the line of stitching 33. It will be noted from Figs. 3 and 5 that portion 28 is slightly narrower than portion 25, the reason for which will presently appear.
Wall blank 12 is provided a slotted por tion 32 which extends axially between the integral portions 33 and 35 thereof which join the wall portions [3 and 22 thereof. When blank i2 is folded inwardly of the position illustrated in Fig. 5, along a line extending between the edge 3 56f blank l2, secures together the outer side edges of rear wall it, portion 28 of blank M and inner wall '22, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and i, and a line of stitching 353 along the folded over marginal edge'38 similarly secures together the outer side edges of outer wall Iii, portion '25 of blank l4 and inner wall It will be noted that a main wallet-pocket or bill holder 52 is formed between the inner sufaces of outer walls l8 and i8 and the opposing surfaces of portions 26 and 28, respectively, of blank M, said pocket being closed at its side ends by the lines of stitching 3B and M3, at its bottom by the fold at between outer Wall it and inner 'wall 29, by the folded portions 33, 35 and by the wall forming part 65 therebetween, hereinafter fully described, said pocket being open at its upper end along the marginal edge 37 of the wallet, as indicated at 48, for the insertion of paper currency, or other articles, therein.
In addition to the main pocket t2 which, as here shown, extends completely across the wallet l9, provision is also made for a purse or change pocket 59. Said purse is formed by inner wall '22 and the confronting portion 28 of blank M, the outer edges of which are stitched together by the aforementioned line of stitching 38 to form one side of the purse, the opposite side of which is closed by the line of stitching 52 which secures the inner edge 5 of wall 22 to the underlying portion 28 of blank It, the bottom of said purse being closed by the aforementioned line of stitching it which secures the'niarginal edge 5% of wall 22 to the opposing marginal edge 58 of said portion 28, as illustrated in 3. It will be apparent that access is had to said purse through the slot 32 which constitutes the mouth thereof. Since the inner marginal edge 66 of wallet blank portion 28 is unsecured, as shown in Fig. 3, it is necessary to provide means to prevent coins or other articles, which may be in purse 53, from entering the wallet pock'et'42. To accomplish this purpose,- the aforementioned wall forming part it is provided, said part being S's-'- cured, at its upper marginal edge '52 to the tape of a slide fastener part 66 by stitching 64. As illustrated in Fig. 3, said stitching 64 also extends through the tape of slide fastener part 58, lining 24 and outer wall [8, the tape of slide fastener part 58 terminating slightly beyond the line of stitching 38, as shown in Fig. 4, so that beyond said termination, the tape of slide fastener part 66 is secured directly to lining 2c and wall it. Part 46 need not be secured at any other portion of the wallet and is positioned so that it depends into purse 5!) between inner wall portion 22 and portion 28 of blank l4, being in surface abutment with said latter portion, as shown in Fig. 3. Said latter portion is narrower than its companion portion 26, as previously indicated, to facilitate the insertion of said part 45 and also to keep down the bulk of the purse at the mouth thereof. The mouth of the purse is provided with a slide fastener 19 for closing said purse between the folded wall parts 33 and 35, said fastener including the aforementioned slide part lit and a companion slide part 12, secured to the marginal edge of wall part 22 adjacent the slot 32 by the line of stitching 14.
Wallet I0 is also provided with a, slide fastener 76 which is secured to the outer marginal edges of outer walls l6 and I8 and which closes the top A and the end B of the folded wallet H], as illustrated in Fig. l, the end C being formed by the fold between outer walls It and I8, and the bottom D including both the fold 44 between outer wall [6 and inner wall 20, and the slide fastener 10. It will be understood that with the slide fastener 1B in closed condition, thereby preventing access to the bill holder or pocket 42, access may still be had to the purse by opening slide fastener 10, thereby rendering the purse and said pocket independent of each other.
Provision is also made for a card pocket 18.
As illustrated in Fig. 5, the inner wall part 29 is provided with a rectangular cut-out 89 under which a transparent window 82 is disposed, said window being secured between the edge portion 84 of said wall part and the underlying edge portion of part 26 of blank [4 by the aforementioned line of stitching 30, said part 20 and the window constituting one wall of the card pocket and said part 26 forming the opposing wall thereof. Fold 44 closes said pocket at its side opposite said line of stitching 30, said pocket being closed at one end by the line of stitching 40, as previously described, and open at its other end, as at 86.
While I have shown and described the presently preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that various changes in the details of construction and in the form and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the underlying idea or principles of this invention within the scope of the appended claims.
