BOX-FASTENER.
Application filed. February 6, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TrrUs J. DAY, a c1t1- zen of the United States of America, residing at Damascus, in the county of Montgomery, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Box-Fasteners, whereof the following 1s a specification.
This invention relates to fasteners for the lids or bottoms of boxes where the two members to be united stand at right angles to each other or nearly so.
The object of the invention is to provide a small, cheap, light and effective fastener especially adapted for boxes used for parcel post packages and one which will operate to draw and hold the members together and avoid spreading at the joint on account of warping or shrinkage.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings represents a transverse section of a collapsible box in which the hinged lid and the hinged bottom are secured to the side walls by fasteners embodying this invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of a fragment of a side wall and lid united by this fastener. Fig. 3 represents a plan view on a small scale of the parts shown in Fig. 2.
The same reference numbers indicate the same parts in all the figures.
-The drawings illustrate this fastener as applied to a collapsible box 10 especially designedfor parcel post use. This box comprises a back wall 11, a front wall 12, a bottom l3-hinged to the front wall 12 by exterior hinges 16 and a top or lid 14 hinged to the back wall 11 by exterior hinges 17 diag onally opposite the hinges 16. An interior hinge 19 connects one end of the end wall 18 I of the box with one end of the back wall 11 thereof, the other end of said end wall being connected with the front wall 12 by an exterior hinge not shown. The other end wall not shown is connected at one end with the back 11 by an exterior hinge not shown and with the front wall 12 by an interior hinge not shown. As no claim is made to the specific construction of the box it is not deemed necessary to illustrate the parts not shown.
The fastener in the illustrated embodiment thereof comprises three stationary members, one pivoted member and one detachable member. The stationary members are an attaching plate 20, a lid member in the form of a staple 25 and a wall member in the Specification of Letters Patent.

form of a staple 30. The pivoted member 40 includes a combined drawing hook and fastening arm, and the locking member 50 is in the form of a pin or key of any suitable shape adapted to the purpose.
The attaching plate 20 has a vertical bearing 21 preferably swaged from the plate in the form of a rib. It is secured to the front wall 13 adjacent to the upper edge thereof by means of nails 22 or other suitable fastening means. The staple 25 is secured to the outer face of the lid 14 transversely thereof adjacent to the upper edge of the wall 12 opposite the attaching plate 20. The staple 30 is secured to the front wall 12 lon gitudinally thereof at some distance to the right of said attaching plate and preferably on a horizontal plane slightly below the plane of the lower edge of said plate.
The swiveled member 40, composed of wire in one piece, comprises a vertical shank 41 journaled in the bearing 21 of the attaching plate 20, a drawing hook above said shank and a locking arm below it. The drawing hook comprises a horizontal arm 42 which forms a primary right angular extension integral with the upper end of the shank 41 and a horizontal arm 43 forming a secondary right angular extension integral with the outer end of said primary extension 42. The arm 42 extends inward over the edge of the side wall 13 and beyond the joint between said side wall and the lid 14 to a point in line with the staple 25. The arm 43 is adapted to engage the staple 25 and is provided with a hump 44 which acts as a cam to draw the side wall 12 tightly into contact with the edge of the lid 14. The outer shank 26 of the staple is in the notch 45 between said hump and the arm 42 when the hook is closed. The depth of said notch is such as to hold a tight joint, the arm 43 springing slightly to permit the pas sage of the hump through the eye of the staple.
The locking arm or handle comprises an angular extension 46 integral with the shank 41 at the lower end thereof. This extension projects from said shank in a direction opposite to that of the secondary extension 43 of the drawing hook, whereby said handle is adapted to lie flat against the wall of the box on one side of the bearing plate when the hook is in locking engagement and to swing over against said wall on the opposite side of said bearing plate when said hook is released and the box collapsed. The handle or locking arm 46 is preferably provided at its outer end with a loop 47 adapted to engage the staple 30 when the fastener is in locking position.
The locking pin 50 is adapted to engage the staple 30 over the loop 47. This pin is made of any suitable construction. As shown it has a vertical shank provided with an inward bend 51 which forms engagement with the staple.
In the use of this box fastener in connection with collapsible boxes such as that herein described, preferably two such fasteners are applied to the side wall 12 and lid 14 exteriorly thereof and two of said fasteners are applied in part to the inner face of the back wall 11 and in part to the outer face of the bottom 13. Assuming that the box lid or top are open, the arm 46 of the swiveled member is swung outward at right angles to the box as indicated in dotted. lines in Fig. l or against the side wall thereof at the left of theattaching plate 20 and in either case the rectangular hook 4213 is outside the path of the swinging lid 14:. The lid is then closed with its edge inside the wall 12 and its outer face flush with the upper edge of said wall. The arm 43 of the angular hook passes through the lid staple 25 and the loop 4L7of the arm 46 engages the wall staple 30. In this swinging of the member 40 the hump or cam 44 of the hook draws the side wall tightly against the edge of the lid, and the notch engages the shank 26 of the staple.
' The other leg of the-staple may be omitted if desired or any suitable stud like projection may be used as an equivalent thereof. The locking pin or key is then inserted in the wall staple 30 over the loop 47 and, assuming that the fasteners for the bottom 13 have been closed in a similar manner, the package is ready for transmission through the mail or otherwise.
I claim as my invention:
1. A fastener of the character described comprising an attaching plate having a bearing, a swiveled member consisting of a shank journaled in said bearing, a hook which consists of a primary right angular extension integral with one end of said shank and a secondary extension integral with said primary extension and an actuating handle which consists of an angular extension integral with the other end of said shank, said handle and said secondary extension projecting in opposite directions, and a lid member engaged by said hook.
2. A fastener of the character described comprising an attaching plate having a bearing, a swiveled member consisting of a shank journaled in said bearing, a drawing hook which consists of a primary right angular extension integral with one end of said shank and a secondary extension integral with said primaryextension and provided with a lateral projection, and an actuating handle which consists of an angular extension integral with the other end of said shank, said handle and said secondary extension projecting in opposite directions and a lid member engaged by said hook and said handle.
3. A fastener of the character described comprising an attaching plate having a bearing, a swiveled member consisting of a shank journaled in said bearing, a hook which consists of a primary right angular extension integral with one end of said shank and a secondary extension integral with said primary extension and an actuating handle which consists of an angular extension integral with the other end of said shank, said handle and said secondary extension projecting in opposite directions,
said handle having a loop at its outer end, and lid and wall members engaged respectively by said hook and said handle.
4. A fastening'member for a fastener of the character described comprising a swiveling shank, a hook which consists of a primary right angular extension integral with one end of said shank, a secondary extension integral with said primary extension and an actuating handle which consists-of an angular extension integral with the other end of said shank, said handle and said secondary extension projecting in opposite 'directions.
