To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ENGELBERT OswALn, citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Lid Supports, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide simple and inexpensive means for opening and holding open the covers of boxes trunks and the like with special reference to sustaining them at an angle when open.

In what it consists, the manner of construction and mode of operation will be fully set out and described in the following specification when taken and read in connection with the drawings accom anying the same and forming a part hereof.

The figure is a perspective view of my device attached to the lid of a trunk with part of the trunk cut away.

Referring to the drawings A represents the inside of the hinge board of a trunk or e box and B the end. It is provided with the usual hinges D secured one-half u on the top of the board A and the other hal against the under or inside of the cover. Upon the upper edge of the hinge board A is removably secured a clasp E having a rear plate F bent at right ang es to the plate E, said plate is further bent down on the inside into a plate G which plate is provided with stay plates H on either end, in these stay. plates is secured a shaft or rod I and around the shaft I is coiled a spring K with one end L projecting down and contacting with the plate G, the other end P extending upward along the inside of the cover and is provided at its outer end with a hook T. This spring, of course, would be of a size and ower adapted to sustain the cover to whic it is applied. Against the inside of the cover R is removably secured a loop S. i

The manner of operating this device is substantially as follows: The clasp E with the spring thereon is set upon the upper edge of the hinge board A of the trunk with the back plate F projecting down on the outside of the back A between thecover R and the back A and the front plate G projecting down along the inside of the board A, the arm P extending nearly crosswise of the cover on the inside. The loop S is then removably secured over the arm P at such point on the cover that the hook T will engage the loop S at an angle desired to have the cover stand when open, the loop S being sufficiently large to ermit the arm P to freely slide therein. 11 this manner of construction and application, when the trunk is unlocked the spring will come into action and raise the lid till the hook T is brought into engagement with the loop S where it will be held.

It will be seen that the clasp E and the attachments can be made at comparatively little cost and can be removably attached Withoutdisfiguring or injuring the trunk by simply releasing the arm P from the loop S.

Having now described my invention what I claim. and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a device of the class described, a member secured to the rear wall of a box being provided with outstanding ears adapted to support a shaft, a spring wound around said shaft, one end of said spring being adapted to rest against the rear wall of the box, the other end of said spring terminating in a loop and means for holding said looped end in slidable engagement with the lid of the box.

2. In a device of the class described, a plate secured to the rear wall of a box, ears formed upon said plate; a shaft supported by said cars, a spring wound around said shaft, one end of said spring being adapted to rest against the rear wall of the box, the other end of said spring extending to a point past the center of the box lid and terminating in a loop and means for holding said spring end in engagement with said box lid.

3. In a device of the class described, a plate secured to the rear wall of a box, ears extending from said. plate to support a shaft, one edge of said plate being bent downwardly and adapted to be secured to the outer surface of the rear wall of the box, a spring coiled around said shaft said spring being adapted to hold the box in its open position.

4. In a device of the class described, a plate secured to the rear wall of a box, said plate being provided with ears, a shaft supported by said ears, a spring coiled around said shaft one end of said spring being adapted to bear against the rear wall of said box, the other end terminating in a loop, a member secured to the top of said box, said looped spring end being adapted to slide with. said member.

5.
