OTTO RANGNOW, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRUNK-TRAY HOLDER.
To all whom it lmay concern.'
Beit known that l, OTTO RANGNOW, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Trunk- Tray Holders, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in a trunk tray holder and particularly relates to a latch located in the lid oi the trunk for holde ing the trunk tray in a raised position.
The object of my invention is to provide a tray holder which will assume the proper position, when the lid is raised so as to re ceive and automatically engage the tray and hold it in a raised position.
A further object of my invention is to provide means for disengaging the latch from the tray when the lid of the trunk is being let down so that the lid may be again raised without raising the tray.
Referring to the 'drawing-Figure 1. is a vertical cross section of a trunk showing my improved trunk tray holder embodied therein, and, Fig. 2. is a perspective view of the tray holder detached.
ln the drawings 1 represents the body oi' the trunk and 2 the lid ofthe trunk. The lid is pivoted to the body by the hinges 3 and is shown in a raised position in full lines and in a closed position 1n dotted lines.
The tray 4 is shown in full lines resting upon the body of the trunk, it being supported by the slip hinges 5 and the projecting plates 6 located at either end of the tray.
hen the tray is raised it swings on the hinges 5 and assumes the position shown in dotted lines. Y
The latch 8 is pivoted to a plate 9,'which is secured to the inside of the end of the lid 2, of the trunk. Said latch S is provided with a projection 10 to form a hook to engage the projecting plate 6 on the tray. Theend of the said latch is curvedso that the projecting plate 6, on the tray, will depress the end of the latch and automaticalljT slide over the said projection 10. Said latch will then engage the plate 6 and hold the tray in a raised position. The latch 8 is continued beyond the pivot and is provided with an enlarged portion to form a weight, so that the said atch will naturally assume the position shown in full lines when the lid 2 is raised, or in the position shown in dotted lines, when the lid is closed.

position, with the hook end 10 of the latch 8Y in engagement with the projecting plate 6 on the tray l and it is desired to close the trunk, it is not necessary to rst disengage said latch 8 from said projecting plate 6 as this will be done automatically as the lid and the tray are lowered together.
The tray swings upon the point 5 as a center and the lid swings upon the point 3 as a center, causing the plate 6 on the tray to describe a different arc than that described by the point of the latch 8 thus causing' thevv plate 6 on the tray to slip off the hook of the latch 8, due to the action ofthe stop 12 in the lid which engages the latch and holds it so that the plate 6 may slip off the hook of said latch, which will release the tray as it descends into the trunk body. The latch 8 when released will assume the position shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, by the action of the weighted end of the latch.
When .the lid is raised the latch will be held, by the stop 12, in a position to receive the plate 6 when the tray is raised. The edge of said plate 6 strikes the curved surface of the hook end of the latch which will move the hook end of the latch away from the stop 12 su'lipiciently to allow the hook to engage the plate 6 and the hook will then be held in engagement with the plate 6 by the action of the Weight on the opposite end of the latch.
Having thus described my invention l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. ln a trunk tray holder, the combination of a trunk body, a lid, a tray, hinged upon said trunk body in which said lid and said tray are eccentrically mounted, a projecting plate on said tray, a latch pivoted 1n said lid, a hook on said latch adapted to engage said projecting plate when the tray is raised and a stop in said lid against which said latch takes as the lid descends and separates said projecting plate from said latch.
2. ln a trunk tray holder, the combination of a trunk body, a lid, a tray, hinges upon said trunk body in which said lid and said tray are eccentrically mounted, a projecting plate on said tray, a latch pivoted in said lid, a hook on said latch adapted to engage said projecting plate when the tray is raised, a stop in said lid against which said latch takes as the lid descends and separates said projecting plate from said latch, said latch having its point curved to form a cam surface by Which said projecting plate may move said latch and means for holding said latch in engagement with said projecting plate When said tray is raised.
3. In a trunk tray holder, the combination of a trunk body, a lid, a tray, hinged upon said trunk body in Which said lid and said tray are eccentrically mounted, a projecting plate on said tray, a latch pivoted in said lid, a hook on said latch adapted to engage said projecting plate When the tray is raised, a stop in said lid against Which said latch takes as the lid descends and separates said projecting plate from said latch, said latch having its point curved to form a cam surface by Which said projecting plate may move said latch and a Weighted portion on the end of said latch opposite to the end which engages said projecting plate.
4. In a trunk tray holder, the combination of a trunk body, a lid, a tray, a projection carried by said tray, a plate secured in said lid, a latch pivoted to said plate, a hook ,ctie
formed on one end of said latch, a Weighted i portion of said latch opposite the end carryl ing the said hook and a projection on said plate to hold the said latch against the action of the Weighted end of said latch When the lid is raised and to force said latch out of engagement With the projection on said tray When the lid is closed.
5. In a trunk tray holder, the combination of a trunk body, a lid, a tray, a projection carried by said tray, a. plate secured in said lid, a latch pivoted to said plate, a hook formed on one end of the said latch, a cam surface formed on said hook by Which said projection on sald tray may depress said hook, a Weight-ed portion on said latch opposite the end carrying the said hook and a projection on said plate to hold the said latch against the action of the Weighted end of said latch When the lid is raised and to force said latch ont of engagement With the projection on said tray When the lid is closed.
In testimony whereof I alix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
