MATCH-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, 1914.
Application filed November 18, 1913. Serial No. 801,760.
To all l'whom t may concern Re it known that I, Emma B. CROGKETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockland, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a Specication.
This invention rela-tes tomatch boxes and more particularly to match box containers or holders.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide adevice of this character which will conveniently "hold a box of safety matches and in which the carrier will be projected through the match case when the lid ot' the casing is open and the match box held against movement in the casing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a match box container of this nature having a spring catch to hold the lid in closed position which when operated to* release the lid will lock the box within the casing and permit the carrier 'to move therethrough.
A further object of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms apart of this invention and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vice; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sec-` tional view taken through the major cross sectional axis; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken approximately on the line 3.-3 of Fig. 2. I
Referring more particularly to the drawing, l represents a casing which is substantially oblong in cross section and which is provided with an open upper end covered by a lid 2 connected to the casing by a spring hinge 3. The opposite o-r free end of the lid is arranged to engage a spring catch 4 carried by the upper forward edge of the casing Y 1. The front and back edges of the box are provided as shown with slots 5 through which are exposed the scraping sides 6 of an ordinary safety match box 7 in which the usual match carrier 8 is slidably mounted. Secured to the bottom of the casing is a spiral spring 9 which has its opposite free end arranged to engage the bottom of the carrier 8 and in order to prevent the box 7 from moving when the carrier is projected by the A spring 9 upon release of the lid 2, the catch 4 1s provided with a pointed projection 10 which is adapted to partially penetrate the box 7 when the' catch is depressed to release the lid. rIhe lid is provided at its free end with an internally arranged projection 1l which is adapted to engage the carrier 8 and force the salne downwardly to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the lid 2 is depressed against the action of the spring hinge 3.
In the operation of the box, the spring catch 4 is depressed by the thumb so as to release the lid 2 which flies open under the impulse of the spring 3 assisted by the upward movement of the carrier under iniuence of the spring 9. The inward movement of the catch causes the projection l0 to partially enter the box 7 and prevent movement of the same with the carrier. When the lid is again depressed the projection 11 .comes into Contact with the carrier and forces the same downwardly through the box 7 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, the rear portion of the lid initially moving the carrier as will be readily understood. l
lVhat I claim is:
l.. A -holder for safety match boxes having match carriers slidably mounted in containers, comprising a casing, a lid hinged onto the casing, means to normally lift said lid, means to hold the lid in closed position, means to project the match carrier through the container when the lid is released, and means actuated in the operation of releasing the lid to hold the container against movement of `the carrier.
2. A holder for lsafety match boxes having match carriers and containers therefor comprising a casing, a spring actuated lid hinged to the casing, a spring catch for normally holding the lid in closed position, means acting to project the carrier through the container when the lid is released, and means actuated in the operation of the catch to release the lid for holding the container against movement in the casing.
3. A holder for safety match boxes having match carriers and containers therefor comprising a casing, a spring actuated lid hinged to the casing, a spring catch for normally holding the lid in closed position,
means acting to project the carrier through n testimony Awhereof I aix my signature the container when the lid is released, and a, in presence of two witnesses. penetrating projection carried by the catch and adapted to be engaged with the con- ELMER B' CROCKETT' tainer to prevent movement of the same Witnesses: when the catch is depressed to release the v J.
