SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 353,3'27, dated November 30, 1886.
Application tiled December 12, 1885. Serial No. 185,510. (Model.) y Y To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SARAH N. RANDOLPH, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Match and Cigar ette Boxes, of which the following is a full and complete specification.
My invention consists in a combined match andcigarette box, in which matches and cigarettes can be conveniently carried, and which can by a simple motion of the finger be opened or closed, so as to expose the matches and cigarettes to view in a convenient position for use.
The chief feature of my invention consists of the partition which divides the interior case, the top of which rests immediately below the lid,so that when the interior case is pushed up from below, this partition will rise and open the lid of the box.
In t-he drawings, Figure lis aside elevation of the exterior case; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the interior box; Fig. 3, a sectional elevation of the two boxes, one inside of the other, the interior one raised up, and the matches and cigarettes in it and in position to be taken out. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the front of the exterior ease, showing hinge of top and spring for holding it open and shut. Fig. 5 is a View of the bottom of the exterior box, showing the hole.
In the drawings, A is the exterior box or ease, made of any suitable material, and of a proper size to hold cigarettes. It is provided with a hole, B, in the bottom, and a lid,- C, hinged at-D. This hinge is provided with a spring, e, and so constructed that when thelid is closed it will keep it so, and when open the spring will maintain it in that position. The construction consists of providing the lid part of the hinge with thelugf, which rests against the dat spring e. The angle on which this lug is placed will, as, seen from the drawings, cause the spring to press the lid down when it is closed, and when open the spring will press the lid in the opposite direction and keep it open.
H is the interior box or case, made of about half the height of the outer one, and of a size to enter easily into the interior of the outside case. It is divided by partitionsjj, one at least of which is as high as the outside case.

When it is desired to open the case to remove a match or cigarette, the indexiinger of either hand is placed on the bottom of the inside case through the hole B in the outside one, and by pushing it up the inside case is raised. When pressure is applied to this inside case to raise it, the upright divisionsyj will be pressed against the inside of the lid O, and will raiseit against the action of the hingespringe until the lugf has passed aposition perpendicular to the spring, when the pressure of the spring will cause the lid to fly open to its extreme position, when the cigarettes will be exposed to view. When the finger is withdrawn, the interior box will fall back, or can be pushed back, into the Outside case and the lid closed, and when so closed will be held to by the spring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In a match and cigarette case, the coinbination of an exterior with an interior case, the latter arranged to be raised out of the former by pressure applied through a holein the bottom of exterior case, and provided with a partition the top of which is raised above the sides and serves to open the lid when pushed up, aswell as divide the case, substantially as described.
2. In a match and cigarette case, the combination ot' an exterior with au interior Case, the latter provided with a partition the top of which is raised above the sides of the interior case to the level of the sides of the exterior ease, as and for the purpose speeied.
