TOBACCO-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 6, 1911.
Patented Jan. 30, 1912.
Serial No. 612,620.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT PENNEY, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at 171 Emerald street north, in the city of Hamilton, in the county of WVentworth, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Tobacco-Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tobacco boxes and it has more particular reference to a box for containing or inclosing what is generally termed plug tobacco such as is used by many smokers for pipe smoking or chewing.
The main object of my invention is to provide a tobacco box for the ordinary cake of plug tobacco furnished with means for cutting the same as and when desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide a neat, compact, and cheap article of the nature specified whereby the plug is kept clean and free from the deteriorating effects consequent upon the plug being carried loose in the pocket.
With these objects in view my invention consists essentially of a case or container made match-box fashion and having fitted in the lid portion a movable blade which is adapted for cutting the tobacco when said blade is turned outwardly therefrom.
The accompanying sheet of drawings is in illustration of my invention.
Figure 1, is a sectional elevation of' the improved tobacco-box closed. Fig. 2, is an elevation of the same with the lid raised and the blade turned outwardly ready for use, and also showing the tobacco plug partially withdrawn therefrom in dot-and-dash lines.
According to my invention and as illustrated, a is the box proper which may be of any suitable metal or material, and it is of appropriate dimensions to easily contain an ordinary sized cake of plug-tobacco b.
0, is the lid or cover which is hinged to the box a, at (Z, in the well known way, and it is under the action of a fiat spring 6, to insure snap closing and rigidity when open as shown by Fig. 2.
f, is a strong flat spring which is secured in the crown of the cover 0, by rivets g, 9, similar to the spring at the back of an ordinary pocket or pen-knife.
h, is a knife blade of any appropriate pattern or shape which is pivoted at i, to the cover a, and it is furnished at its pivot part with a shoulder j, for cooperation with the free end of the aforesaid spring f, to retain it rigid when opened out as shown by Fig. 2, a slot being provided in the front end of said cover for this purpose. The blade h, when closed lies completely within the cover 0, as will be clearly comprehended from Fig. 1.
k, is a finger groove in the blade I, by means of which it is opened out; or a turnscrew or button may be applied to the pivot z, in the well known way.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that by my invention I provide a simple, cheap and effective combined tobacco box and knife blade, and its use will be easily understood from the foregoing description and accompanying drawing. Furthermore it will be apparent that the plug of tobacco can be readily withdrawn or removed from the case a, and cut by the blade h, as desired, thereby dispensing with the necessity of keeping a separate pen or pocket knife for the purpose. Also by my invention much inconvenience will be overcome, while at the same time the tobacco will be kept fresh and clean.
Obviously the shape, pattern and size of the device will be dependent upon the class of tobacco carried, and the metal or other material; used may be of any suitable strength and quality.'
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle, of a hinged closure for said receptacle, said do sure comprising side and top walls, and a knife blade pivoted between said side walls, the top wall of said closure forming a spring, which coacts with said knife blade to maintain it in either open or closed position.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle, of a hinged closure for said receptacle, said closure comprising side and top walls, and a knife blade pivoted between said side walls, the top wall of said closure forming a spring which coacts with said knife blade to maintain it in either open or closed position, the cutting edge of said blade lying toward the top wall of the closure when the blade is in its closed position.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a receptacle, of a hinged closure comprising top and side walls, the front end of said closure being open, and a knife blade pivoted between the side walls of the closure adjacent the open end thereof and opening outwardly through said open end, the cutting edge of the blade lying toward the top wall when the blade is in its closed position, the top wall forming a spring which eoacts with the blade to maintain said blade in either open or closed 10 position.
Signed at Hamilton, Province of Ontario, Canada, this 25th day of February 1911.
HERBERT PENNEY.
