' PACKAGE CUTTER AND CONTAINER.
Application filed December 6, 1926. Serial No. 152,805. v
I This invention relates to a cutter wherebythe upper portion of a cigarette package may be evenly torn off and in a metal case or container for housing said cutter and package. The objects of my invention are to provide simple, eflicient, durable and convenient means for carrying, cigarettes, either in loose form or when packed in packages containing approximately twenty cigarettes.
Another object of my invention isto provide a cutter whereby the upper portion of a paper cigarette package may be easily and evenly torn off whereupon said package within said cutter is placed in a carrying case or container.
A further object of my invention is to provide a cutter and carrying casein which bulk cigarettes can be easily packed and carried, as Well as packages containing cigarettes pre- 20 viously packed.
A still further object of my invention is to construct said cutter and carrying case so that the removal of the cigarettes, one at a time, or otherwise, is effected with the greatest of ease.
My invention consists in providing a metal carrying case or container within which .a cutter is adapted to fit, which cutter snugly receives a paper cigarette package containing approximately twenty cigarettes, or in which loose or bulk cigarettes may be placed as desired.
My invention further consists in the construction, combination, location and arrangement of parts, as herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the metal carrying case;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the metal carrying case showing the cutter and cigarettes in dotted lines;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the carrying case, cutter, paper cigarette package, and cigarettes, the carrying case being partly broken away and shown in vertical section;
Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on a plane corresponding to line 41-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on aplane corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the cutter before being bent to shape;
Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the cutter after being bent;
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the cutter;
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the cutter showing a paper cigarette package contained therein and having the top torn therefrom, showing the upper ends of the cigarettes contained in said paper package;
Fig. 10 is a plan view of Fig. '9; and Fig. 11 is a front elevation of Fig. 9, showing the method of tearing away the upper clearly shown in Fig. 2. Bottom'2 of said carrying case or container l-is provided with opening 8, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, for purposes more fully explained later on. The upper edge 9 of front side 5 is provided with centrally disposed nib 10 which is adapted to be received by correspondingly shaped depression 11 in downwardly projecting front wall 12 of top or lid 7, for the purpose of retaining lid 7 in'closed position against rib or bead 10 when said carrying case or container 1 is being carried in the pocket or when not in use. Cutter '13 comprises bottom 14:, end walls 15 and 16 and side walls 17 and 18, respectively, the upper edge of said walls being cut .away to form a ragged or saw-tooth edge 19, as clearly shown in the figures. Said cutter 13 is made from one piece of material, the blank form of which is shown in Fig. 6.
The use of my invention is as follows:
Assuming that a paper package 20 containing cigarettes 21 is inserted within cutter 13 and that the upper portion 22 of said paper package 20 is torn away upon the sawtooth edge 19, as shown in Fig. 9, thereby leaving the upper ends 23 of said cigarettes 21 exposed and that said cutter is then placed within carrying case or container 1, as shown in Fig. 2, and lid 7 is in the closed position; the carrying case thus filled and closed may be easily carried in a coat pocket or the hippocket of mens trousers without the danger of mashing or breaking the cigarettes, as is so often the case when carrying a paper pack age containing cigarettes without having some sort of protection for said package.
To remove one of the cigarettes after the container is thus packed, simply raise or open lid 7 of said container 1 and insert the index linger through opening 8 of bottom 2 of said container 1, thereby pushing or raising cutter 13 upwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, thereby exposing the upper ends 23 of cigarettes 21 whereupon any one or several of the said cigarettes may be easily removed from within paper package 20 held within cutter 13.
An advantage of this construction is that many people using cigarettes or people using cigarettes in large quantities, often buy them in bulk or in cans or packages containing a hundred or more. In a case of this kind, all that is necessary to carry a small supply within the container is to place approximate- 1y twenty cigarettes within cutter 13 and then insert said cutter 13 within carrying case 1, as before described. With this method of packing and carrying cigarettes the disadvantage of breaking or in various other ways damaging the cigarettes is avoided, thus eliminating the number of shorts, as is often the case when carrying cigarettes in the pockets packed only by the paper package within which they are sold.
Another advantage of this container or carrying case is that the loss of cigarettes is avoided. In other words, the users of cigarettes often times throw the paper package away, thinking that all of the cigarettes have of the cigarettes in the original paper container have been removed.
It will be understood that certain changes and modifications of my invention can be made without departing from its scope or spirit as defined in the claim.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: i
In a cigarette carrying case having an outer tacle adapted to partly receive cigarettes in a paper enclosure and said receptacle and enclosure being adapted to be enclosed in said outer container and to be lifted upwardly therein partly out of said outer container for conveniently cutting and removing the'upper portion of the enclosure across any desired portion of said upper cutting edge and eX- posing the cigarettes for convenient removal as desired.
