2 Claims.
This invention relates to a package for various types of material and especially loose materials, one of which may be smoking tobacco.
It is an object of this invention to provide a package having a hinged lid thereon so that this lid may be partially opened for pouring the contents of the package therefrom.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a package which will enable the user of the packaged material to open and close the package with one hand, and if so desired, to hold in the other hand, the receptacle or object into which or upon which it is desired to place some of the packaged material.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a package having a hinged lid having sides, so that the top and sides of the lid form a funnelshaped opening which opening may be enlarged or reduced by raising or lowering the lid and through which the packaged material can flow and this flow can be regulated not only as to the amount but also as to the rapidity of flow or discharge of the packaged material. This type of construction enables the person holding the package and pouring the contents therefrom to more accurately place the flowing of or discharge of the material in the exact spot or place desired.
Irrespective of how the package itself is fabricated, this package does represent an improvement over the present type packages in affording the operator of the package, something which enables the operator, if desired, to open and close it with one hand and regulate the rapidity of the flow of the material from the package thus to more accurately place the material into or onto the chosen place or spot.
It is a further object of this invention to, provide a package having a hinged lid which can be fully opened for filling or for loosening the contents and which can be partially opened for pouring the contents therefrom.
This application is a divisional application carved out of my co-pending application Serial Number 23,051, filed May 23, 1935.
Some of the objects of the invention having been stated, other objects will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Figure 1 is an isometricview of the modified form of the invention;
Figure 2 is a View similar to Figure l but showing the lid in partially opened position;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional View taken along the line 3-3 in Figure 1.
In Figures 1, 2 and 3, the invention is shown in which the container proper is indicated by reference character and can be of any suitable material such as metal and the like, or can be formed from fibrous material such as paper and folded from a suitable blank, or can be formed from a combination of metal and any other suitable material. This container has, likewise, a suitable binding 3! made of any suitable rigid or semi-rigid material around the upper edge thereof, and to this binding there is pivoted as at 10 32 a lid member 33. Said lid member 33 having a downwardly projecting portion 34 having a projection 35 therein adapted to fit into a suitable indentation 35a in the binding 3i for holding the lid in closed position. The container may be made of a suitable material and the binding thus entirely dispensed with.
In Figure 2 it is seen how the material can be removed from the container as the lid portion 33 has the side portions 3'! and 38, and with the lid in the position shown in Figure 2, the thumb can be placed over one of the openings between projection 34 and the side 3?, or a side 38, depending upon whether it is held in the right or left hand, and the contents can be poured from one side of the lid, and the downwardly projecting portions 3? and 38 will prevent spilling of the contents, as they are poured into a receptacle, cigarette paper or the like.
With a lid of this type, it is seen that it can be partially opened and the contents of the package poured therefrom and the rate of flow can be regulated by the amount the lid is opened. Also, the thumb can be placed over part of the opening to regulate the rate of flow of the material from the package.
In the drawing and specification there has been set forth a preferred embodiment of the invention, and although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only, and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A container having a lid hingedly secured at one of its edges to one wall of the container, said lid having its free end open and having downwardly projecting portions on its opposed sides which fit in over-lapping relation to the sidewalls of the container when the lid is in closed position, a third downwardly projecting member substantially narrower than said open end extending from approximately the central portion of the open end of the lid and fitting in overlapping relation to the front wall of the container and which downturned portions, when the lid is partially opened, form guides for pouring the material from the container out past the free end of the lid on either side of the third downwardly projecting member.
2. A container having an open end and a lid hingedly secured to the back wall of the same, said lid having an open end having a pair of downwardly projecting side members fitting into 10 overlapping relation to the sidewalls of the container when in closed position, a third down-
