JESSE ADLER, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
MATCH-BOX AN D CIGAR-CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn ADLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a Combined Match-Box and Cigar-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the combination of a match box suitable for carrying in the pocket, with a device for cutting oii the tip of a cigar, and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpens've device of this character, having certain advantageous features of construction and operation.
The invention consists in the combined match box and cigar cutter illustrated in the accompanying drawings and hereinafter described, and as defined in the succeeding claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying the invention, with the cover in open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the device, on line 2-2 of Fig. 3 with the cover closed, and Fi 3 is a horizontal section on line y-y of Fig.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a flat box 1 provided with a cover 2, hinged at 3. The box is provided with the usual cover-opening spring 4 and catch Close to, and parallel with, one side 6 of the box is a partition'i, and in the narrow space between the partition and the side of the box is a cigar cutter 8 of sheet metal, which is pivoted at 9 to the partition 7. The cigar cutter has semi-circular opening edge 10, and the side 6 of the box is provided with a circular opening 11 over which the cutting edge passes wnen the cutter is moved. downward about the pivot 9, so that if the tip of a cigar be inserted in the opening 11 it will be engaged and cut.
The cigar cutter is actuated by the cover 2, being connected therewith by a link 12 moving between the partition and the side 6. The link has an oflset portion 18 pivoted to the cigar cutter, and its upper end has an opening loosely engaging a pin 14 on the inside of the cover. The link engages the pin let resiliently, and may be bent inward to disengage the pin when it is necessary to remove the cigar cutter from the box to sharpen it or to clean the device.
The above-described arrangement is such that when the cover is opened the cigar cutter is raised, and when the cover is closed the Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 425,005.
cigar cutter moves across the opening 11 and cuts the cigar inserted therein. 'To dispose of the severed tip of the cigar, a sleeve 15 is iixed to the wall 16 of the box, projecting inwardly towards and in line with opening 11, and a corresponding opening is formed in the partition 7. A transverse passage is thus formed for the emission of the cigar tip, and this passage, being short and direct, cannot readily become clogged. As a convenient means for securing the partition 7 in place, the side 6 of the box is provided with an inwardly-projecting pin 18 loosely engaging an opening in the partition, and the partition has a lug or projection 17 loosely engaging a notch or recess in the edge of the box at one end. To remove the partition it is necessary only to disengage the link 12 from pin 14 in the manner above described, and bend the partition inward to disengage it from pin 18, and the partition may then be raised from the box, together with the cigar cutter. When the partition is in place its upper end is held by the joint action of lug 17 and pin 18, while the lower portion of the partition is held in place by engagement with the end of sleeve 15.
The above-described arrangement affords convenient provision for removing the cigar cutter to sharpen it or to clean out the space between the partition and the side of the box.
Space for the storage of matches is afforded between the partition and the side 16 of the box, and the location of the sleeve 15 near the bottom of the box is such that it does not reduce the storage capacity of the box for matches of moderate length.
It is obvious that this cutting device can be used not only in match boxes but in any receptacle or box such as a cigar or cigarette case.
The inventor is aware that it has been proposed heretoiore to provide a match box with a cigar cutter actuated by the cover of the box, but in such previous device the cutter has been constructed and arranged to operate when the cover is opened. The present arrangement, in whicn the cutter operates when the cover is closed, is much more convenient, and is novel, so far as I am informed.
Various modifications may be made in the construction and operation of the illustrated embodiment of the invention within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the "following claims.
I claim:' A I 1. The combination with a match-box having a cover hinged thereto and provided With an opening, of a cigar cutter pivotally mounted Within the box in operative relatlon to the 0 ening, and a link connected at one end to tiie cutter and at its other end to the cover, whereby the cover will operate the cutter 2, The combination with a match-box having a cover hinged thereto and provided With an opening, of a partition in the match box, a cutter pivotally mounted on the partition in operative relation to the opening, a link connected at one end to the cover and at its other end to the cutter whereby the cover Will operate the cutter.
3'; The combination With a match-box having a cover hinged thereto and provided With anopening', of a partition removably secured in the match box, a cutter pivotally mounted on the partition in operative relation to the opening, a link detachably secured at one end to the cover and at its other end pivoted to the cutter whereby the partition carrying the cutter can be removed.
