COMBINED MATCH-BOX, CIGAR-CUTTER, AND 'CORKSCREW.

Be it known that I, BARTHOLOMEW BROOKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin a Combined Match- Box, Cigar-Cutter, and Corkscrew, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in smokers articles, and has for its object to provide an article in which a match-box, corkscrew, and cigar-cutter are combined.

With this end in view this invention 7 consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, the construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the article, a portion of the same being shown in section; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same; Fig. 3, a plan view with the cover swung to one side; Fig. 4, a bottom plan view; Fig. 5, a side elevation of the article with the corkscrew inplace for use, a portion of the article being broken away to show the interior; Fig. 6, a perspective view of a modified form of corkscrew; Fig. 7, a plan view of the device, showing a modified form of cigar-cutter; Fig. 8, a similar view to Fig. 7, showing the cover swung to one side.

Arepresents the match-box, said match-box having an opening through the upper end. This opening is adapted to be normally closed by a cover B,1pivoted at- B to the top of the match-box. The top of the match-box extends out rearwardly, and. this extending portion is provided with an opening O, through which the end of thecigar may be thrust.

I) is a knife lying flat underneath the extension A' of the top of the box, and this knife is secured upon the same pivot as the cover B, which extends through the top. The knife being sharpened upon both edges will out the cigar from either side.

To cut the end off of a cigar, first the cover is swung to one side, so as to open the matchbox. Then the end of the cigar is thrust through the opening O, and when the cover is closed the knife will clip off the end.

In one side of the match-box is located a tube E, into which is designed to be held the corkscrew F. This corkscrew F is provided with a block G, which block is provided with a pin G, extending outward therefrom. hen the corkscrew is out of use and is inserted in the tubular portion E, the pin (3 will protrude through a slot H, formed in the outside wall of the tubular portion, and when the cover is rocked to one side upon the match-box the corkscrew can be removed from the tubular portion by raising the pin G, and then the corkscrew may be put in operative position by sliding the block into the tubular portion, so that the corkscrew extends outward at right angles to the box. The block fitting tightly within the tubular portion and the shank of the corkscrew protruding through the slot H hold the corkscrew firm, so that it can be used, the match-box answering as a handle.

The cover B when in its normal position is locked in place by means of the slight projection 13 extending downward from the under side of the outer end of the cover, entering the slot H, so that it would be necessary to raise the cover slightly to open the same. This will make the opening of the box somewhat of a puzzle, as there is no evidence of a catch in sight when looking downward upon the top of the box.

In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a modified form of cigar-cutter in which the knife is normally at one side of the opening C, so that the cigar is first thrust through the opening O and the tip is cut from the cigar by the opening of the lid instead of the closing of the same, as before described; but this construction has a disadvantage in that the cigar is only cut on one movement of the lid, and in the former construction the cigar could be cut by moving the lid in either direction.

In Fig. 6 I have shown a modified form of corkscrew which is made entirely of wire, the shank end of the same being bent so as to form a ring I, the plane of which is parallel with the shank of the corkscrew, and this ring I is adapted to M in the tubular portion E when the corkscrew is to be used, the wire in forming the ring being bent backward to the shank, so as to form the narrow neck I, which passes through the slot H when the corkscrew is placed in position for operation. The wire for forming the neck is then bent outward to form a ring J, the plane of which is at right angles to the shank and is adapted to fit within the tubular portion of the box when the corkscrew is placed thereon and is out of use, the end of the wire for forming the ring J extending outward to form the pin K, which answers the same purpose as the pin Gr, described in connection with the other construction. This form of corkscrew can be made at a comparatively small cost and still will be held firmly in the tubular portion when used.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown, as slight modifications could be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a matchbox, a lid pivoted to the top of the match-box and adapted to swing horizontally, an extension formed with the top of the match-box, an opening formed through said extension vertically, a knife carried by the lid and adapted to cross said opening when the lid is swung upon its pivot, a tubular portion formed in the match-box upon one side, the wall of the box provided with a slot extending downward from the top and extending from the exterior of the box to the interior of the tubular portion, a corkscrew adapted to normally fit within the tubular portion, anenlargement formed upon the shank end of the corkscrew, said enlargement adapted to fit tightly within the tubular portion when the corkscrew is at right angles to the box with the shank extending through the slot, and a pin extending outward at right angles to the corkscrew adapted to protrude through the slot when the corkscrew is in its normal or inoperative position, as and for the purpose specified.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a device of the character described consisting of a match-box, a lid pivoted at one end so as to swing horizontally over the top of the box, an extension formed upon the top of the box extending outward beyond the outer wall of the box, said extension provided with a vertical opening, a knife arranged underneath the extension and adapted to fit tightly against the under side of the same, said knife connected to the pivot of the lid so that the knife will cross the opening when the lid is swung, a vertical tubular portion formed in the box, the wall of the tubular portion being provided with a slot extending from the top of the box downward and extending from the interior of the tubular portion to the exterior of the box, a corkscrew adapted to normally fit within the tubular portion, an enlargement formed upon the shank end of the corkscrew adapted to tightly -fit the tubular portion when the corkscrew is at right angles to the box with the shank extending through the slot, a projection formed with a cover and extending downward from the outer lower side thereof and adapted to snap into the upper end of the slot when the lid is closed, and a pin protruding outward at right angles to the corkscrew and adapted to protrude through the slot when the corkscrew is in its normal or inoperative position, as and for the purpose specified.
