MATCH-BOX.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. Anans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to match boxes or holders, the object of the invention being to provide a match box which is adapted to be readily and conveniently attached to an automobile, carriage or other vehicle or support to hold a desired quantity of matches for use, and which is so constructed as to permit the match receptacle per so to be folded and held in a closed position upon its support to protect and prevent loss or displacement of the matches.

A further object of the invention is to provide a match box or holder of this character which is simple of construction, handy in operation, and adapted to be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a View showing the application of the invention to a supporting part, such as the dashboard of an automobile or other vehicle. Fig. 2 is a back view of the holder removed. Fig. 3 is a front view thereof. Fig. 4 is a view showing in full lines the receptacle open for removal of the matches and in dotted lines the receptacle closed.

The improved match holder embodying my invention comprises a back plate 1 provided at its side edges with a pair of forwardly extending flanges 2, and having at its upper edge a latch plate 3 terminating in a bead or engaging rim 4:- The back plate and parts mentioned are preferably integral in a neutral structure and formed of spring metal to adapt the latch 3 to have spring action. The upper edges of the flanges 2 are beveled to permit the latch to have free movement in a vertical plane, as will be readily understood.

A box or receptacle 5 is provided to hold the matches. The inner end of this receptacle is pivotally mounted upon a. pin 6 ex-,

tom end 7 of the box being provided with a flange or extension 8 adapted to bind slightly against the back plate to atlord, in conjunction with the contacting surfaces of the flanges 2 and side walls of the receptacle 5, sutlicient friction to prevent the receptacle from dropping violently by gravity when released and spilling or displacing the matches.

The upper or outer end 9 of the receptacle provided with a guard strip 10 which partially overhangs the match containing chamber and is adapted to retain the matches in a compact mass in said chamber, the remainder of the inner wall of the receptacle being cut away so as to provide an opening for the insertion and withdrawal of the matches.

The edge 11 of the receptacle at the point of junction of its outer end. wall 9 and its bottom or front wall 12 is slightly curved or rounded for engagement with the beaded edge of the latch plate 8, and the receptacle is of such length that when turned up or folded parallel with the back plate it will lie between the flanges 2 and terminate at its free edge below the uppermost portions of the upper ends of the flanges, so that the upper portion of the wall 12 will be engaged by the beaded edge of the latch plate, thus holding the receptacle against opening movement.

By the construction described it will be seen that when the match receptacle is folded, its open side will be closed by a back plate which, while the inner portion of said receptacle will be inclosed between the flanges 2 and the top of said receptacle covered by the latch plate 3, by which access of moisture, dust or dirt to the receptacle will be, to a large extent, prevented, thus protecting the matches from liability of injury. By grasping the sides of the receptacle between the thumb and forefinger the receptacle may be swung downwardly at right angles to the back plate to an open position for extraction of the matches, or swung upwardly to a closed position in which it will be engaged and held by the latch plate.

The lower ends of the back plate and flanges 2 project below the receptacle when the latter is in closed position, to such an extent as to form an abutment against which the inner end wall of the receptacle bears when said receptacle is open, thus supporting the same in open position. The projecting lower portion of the back plate is preferably provided with a serrated surface 13 against which the matches may be struck and ignited, while said back plate is provided at suitable points with one or more openings id for the passage of fastenings whereby it may be secured to the dashboard of an automobile or carriage or any other suitable support.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawing, the construction, mode of use and advantages of my invention will be readily understood and appreciated, and it will be seen that a device of this character is provided which is simple of construction and adapted to be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.

I claim A match safe comprising a vertically disposed back plate, vertically disposed side flanges extending forwardly from the back plate, a transverse pivot pin carried by the flanges adjacent to and in advance of the back plate and above the lower end thereof,

an oblong rectangular receptacle pivoted at the upper portion of its inner end to said pin so as to fold upwardly between the flanges parallel with the back plate and downwardly at right angles to the back plate, so as to abut at its inner end in the latter named position against the back plate below the pivot pin, said receptacle having a flange extending inwardly from the upper portion of its outer end, and a spring latch plate integral with and extending forwardly at a downward inclination from the upper edge of the back plate and movable upwardly under pressure from the outer end' of the folded receptacle, said latch plate be Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D.
